Overall Review

Yamaha has started to look into the scooterette segment in India, for this is currently the fastest growing segment for two-wheelers. Yamaha has Yamaha Ray Z as the successor to its first gearless scooter Yamaha Ray, and is specially targeted at males. Unlike Ray, sporty graphics and enhanced design forms the pattern on the new Ray Z, which makes it manly and robust. Yamaha Ray Z comes with the same engine that has been seen in its predecessor and almost all other specifications of both these machines are similar. Ray Z is powered with an 113cc, air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve with CVT and single cylinder engine. The top power generated by this engine is 7.1PS with a top torque of 8.1Nm. The dimensions of the scooter are easy to get used to with a low kerb weight of 104kg. The front wheel of the scooter is equipped with Telescopic suspension while the rear part is supported with unit swing suspension. The vehicle has 18litres of under seat storage to accommodate the rider. The overall design of the bike is very enticing with features like meter visor, rear wing grab bars, red coil rear suspension, and an all black theme. The performance of the scooterette is decent with a mileage delivery of 53kmpl.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

Yamaha Ray Z with a powerful 113cc engine claims a mileage of 53kmpl, which is impressive. The user reviews say that the scooter is returning a mileage of 53kmpl on the highways while on the narrow streets and busy roads, the mileage comes down to around 45kmpl. The scooter has been able to carry 5 litres of fuel in its tank.

Colors

This is a stylish looking scooter with sporty graphics and the colors that are applied to its body are Black Thunder, Pristine White, and Regal Red. The front fender, half-front fairing, and rear panel are in body color along with attractive graphics. The remaining half-front fairing, cowl, rear view mirrors, muffler, tyres, and all the left out parts of the scooter come in Black.

Acceleration and Pick up

Incorporation of 113cc, 4-stroke engine with CVT produces the maximum power outcome of 7.1PS, which is available at an acceleration of 7500RPM. This comes along with the maximum torque outcome of 8.1Nm at an acceleration rate of 5000RPM. This power and torque output of the mill makes the scooter turn from 0 to 60kmph in just 12 seconds. The top speed at which it can rev is 85kmph.

Appearance

This is a trendier and sportier model of Ray, which is named as Yamaha Ray Z. This scooter has some muscular touch that makes it compatible for men such as its racing stripes on vibrant colors. The rear grab rails are unique, something never seen before. The long front panel of the machine has been nicely stylized. The headlight with integrated indicators are on this panel only. The visor of this scooter is also unique, it has a smoked finish that gives it a sporty look and helps to avail down force. The front fender in body color looks brilliant on the black wheel. The foot space is large and very smartly designed; the foot pegs for the pillion rider are easily foldable. The seat of this scooter is long and bit wide for better comfort. The rear panel has been nicely decorated with sporty stickers. The muffler is in full black paint and gives a heavy look to the scooter. The unique grab rail is the most soothing thing done to this scooter as it makes it look like a Bat from behind. This grab bar is termed as 'Aluminum Rear Wing Grab Bar' by the manufacturer. The tail light of the scooter is big which comes with attached indicators. The single spring suspension comes in red color. The instrumentation of this vehicle is quite impressive though of old analog type. The front panel is stylish and displays speedometer, fuel gauge, and odometer. The overall appearance of this scooter is simply impeccable.

Comfort Feature

The scooter is very comfortable as it is very light to handle. The proper height of the seat makes it easier and comfortable for the rider to manouvre the machine. The large under seat storage provides the rider enormous relaxation, as it reduces the effort of carrying big helmet or other essential things. The large foot space helps taller riders to keep their legs in place easily. The foot pegs are designed in a way that they come out easily with a flick. The seats of this machine are in carbon pattern, which are more comfortable than other seats. The rear wing grab bar is strong and provides a sporty look to the bike. The rear suspension takes all the pressure of both the riders on itself. The front suspension works well with the front wheel while supporting the handle and the big panel. The front light illuminates the darkest stretches of the roads to ensure a safer ride.

Dimensions

Yamaha Ray Z is crafted on an underbone type chassis. The dimensions of the scooter are: length of 1835mm, width of 675mm and height of 1090mm. The seat height is of 760mm and the wheelbase of the scooter is 1270mm. The scooter has shown the minimum ground clearance of 128mm and comes with a  kerb weight of 104kg.

Engine

This scooter by Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India sports an air-cooled, 4-stroke, SOHC, 2-valve with CVT engine that displaces 113cc. The company claims that this engine returns the best mileage in its class. Also, this engine can help the beginners to gain more confidence on a non-gear vehicle. The engine is provided with BS type of carburettor along with TPS (Throttle Position sensor) function. This makes the performance of the engine better with enhanced fuel efficiency and emission characteristics. The bore x stroke in the engine is of 50.0 x 57.8mm. The engine starts with either the kick-start or the self-start button options. The battery equipped in this machine is also maintenance free so that the self-start feature does not fade.

Wheels

Yamaha Ray Z comes fitted with 90/100-10 53 J, tube type tyres at both the ends. The front tyre works with telescopic fork suspension to keep the journey smooth and likable for the riders though the narrow tyre keeps the rider from performing sharp turns. The front and rear wheels are loaded with 130mm diameter drum brakes. Though its competitors like Honda Aviator comes fitted with disc brake at the front wheel.

Suspension

The scooter maker has installed Telescopic suspension at the front and Unit swing suspension at the rear. The rear suspension is a single spring suspension that maintains the balance alone and provides a nice and stable ride to the riders.

Handling and Control

Yamaha Ray Z weighs just 104kg, which is very light for a vehicle, and this makes the riders very easy to handle and control the bike in every situation, they encounter. The suspension system of this scooter is also very strong which keeps the quality of the ride up to the mark. The narrow tyres might pose problems for the rider on sharp turns and on sandy terrains. The braking system of this bike is not that advanced but does a good job when needed.

Pros

·         Mighty engine ·         Decent Fuel efficiency ·         Cool appearance, ·         Large under seat storage

Cons

·         Narrow tyres ·         Braking could have been better
