Expert Review of Nikon Coolpix S3100
Nikon Coolpix S3100 is a sleek, fashionable and reasonably priced digital compressed camera intended at the point-and-shoot user. With an aluminium body that’s just 18.4mm thick, While being just a strictly average camera, the main positive of the device is its availability in a vast variety of colors. Nikon S3100’s features include a wide-angle 5x zoom lens with electronic stabilisation, 14 megapixel sensor, 2.7 inch LCD screen, 720p HD movies, a scene auto selector with 19 modes, Smile Timer function, face-priority autofocus, a skin softening function, and subject tracking auto-focus. The Nikon Coolpix S3100 comes in purple, red, black, blue, pink, citrus yellow and silver. Nikon Coolpix S3100 is as a complete product as anyone would expect a Nikon camera to be. The major improvisations that have been done to make this device look and perform better than its predecessor are a broader focal range, a couple of million extra pixels in terms of headline resolution, and High Definition video rather than standard definition all of which are worth having. But all of these basic features at what price? That is the question worth thinking. The Metal shell, respectable zoom range and quick response times for the most part leave us with little to moan about. Having said that, in the cons list Nikon Coolpix had us again wondering about how slim is too slim for practical use. Especially on a model that doesn't have the benefits of optical nor sensor shift anti shake alongside the less effective electronic variety and can be a pain sometimes everything said and done. If you're not shooting toward the telephoto end of the zoom nor in low light without some supplementary means of support regularly it's not a problem. However, in using it on a daily basis over the course of a week it does appear that a certain amount of usability has been sacrificed on the altar of style.
Design and Build Quality
The Nikon Coolpix S 3100 is available in seven vibrant colors including blue, purple, pink, yellow, black, silver and red! A slim and sleek camera, it measures only 93.5mm x 57.5mm x 18.4 mm and weighs 118 grams making it the pocket perfect size. The Although the camera feels sturdy when gripped there's no actual grip on this Coolpix, at least as regards the faceplate. At the back there are six raised plastic nodules to provide a point of purchase for the thumb, a raised plastic surround encircling the video button adjacent, so this doesn't get accidentally pressed when fetching the camera out of a pocket. There's a vacant lug to attach the provided wrist strap at the side, and avoid accidental drops. From the front Nikon Coolpix S3100 is your standard point and shoot, lens retracted within the body when not in use, flanked left and right by a lozenge shaped window housing the built in flash and, over at the opposite side of the lens, an AF assist/self timer lamp window. A built in microphone sits just beneath the lens barrel near the base of the camera, at the exact location we found our middle finger naturally resting (and so obscuring) when holding the camera steady in both hands. Conversely the built-in speaker is located at the base of the camera, rather than on the top plate or at one side.
Focus and Face Detection
The 5x optical Zoom NIKKOR glass lens comes with electronic Vibration Reduction and Contrast-detect autofocus. Under Auto mode it automatically selects 9 areas to focus upon while this autofocus can also be set according to Center priority, Face priority or Manual with 99 focus areas. The camera also supports Subject tracking in which it keeps a track of the subject when he moves away and back into the screen and focuses on it. The focusing range is Approx. 50 cm. to infinity in wide setting and Approx. 80 cm. to infinity in telephoto setting. In macro close up mode, the focus range is approx 10 cm to infinity in wide setting. The camera also boasts of a focus lock and has a maximum of 9 autofocus areas. The camera supports Face ID recognition and focuses on the subject in the particular AF setting.
Lens and Image Stabilization
The lens is NIKKOR glass lens made by incorporating 6 elements in 5 groups. It gives an effective optical zoom of 5x which gives perfect close up pictures. The lens has a focal length of 4.6mm-23.0mm (angle of view equivalent to that of 26-130mm lens in 35mm format) and a Lens f number of f/3.2-6.5. The camera has an ISO sensitivity ranging from 80 to 3200 and uses a image stabiliser to prevent image blur.
Screen and Menus
The Nikon Coolpix S3100 has a 2.7 inch monitor made od a TFT type LCD with 5 levels of brightness adjustment. The monitor comes with 230000 dots resolution and gives an approx 97% horizontal coverage in shooting mode and 100% coverage in playback mode. The camera has a Self-timer which can be selected from 10 and 2 seconds duration. It sports a built in flash with a range of 0.5m to 4.5m in Auto mode. The built in flash is a TTL auto flash with monitor preflashes. The menu is user friendly and supports many languages including hindi, english, arabic, french etc. The high speed USB helps establish user interface and data transfer. The menu can also be used to set Exposure Metering to 256-segment matrix or Center-weighted. The camera supports Programmed auto exposure and programmed Auto with Motion Detection & Exposure Compensation and Automatic Exposure Scene Modes. The scene modes include Light, Beach ,Black and White Copy, Close Up, Dusk/Dawn, Fireworks Show, Party/Indoor, panorma, portrait etc. The menu can also be used for image editing like cropping, D-Lighting, Filter Effects, Quick retouch, Skin softening etc.
The nikon coolpix S 3310 uses a Li-ion rechargeable Battery EN-EL19 which requires 2 hours and 10 minutes to get fully charged when using AC Adapter EH-69P. The battery life is approx 220 shots. The camera uses MTP and PTP for interface Data transfer protocol and NTSC and PAL for video Output.
The camera has a continuous shooting option which gives the best up to 3 shots at approx. 0.7 frames per second. It uses SD memory card, SDHC memory card, SDXC memory card to expand the meagre 45 MB internal storage capacity. It allows full HD movie recordin in 1280x720p at 30fps. The movies are recorded in AVI motion JPEG format. The camera also supports voice memo function. However, the camera lacks any HDMI output and has only the standard USB output.
The Compact Digital Camera uses a CCD image sensor of 1/2.3 inches having an Effective number of 14.0 million pixels. Sensor is the backbone of a device and converts optical images into electrical signal for image processing.
