The camera is light too with the delicate weight of 139 grams with its battery and memory cards included. The camera is 95.5 mm x 58.9 mm x 20.8 mm in width, height and depth respectively, hence so easy to squeeze amidst your stuff and carry around for everyday photography. The touch screen compliments the camera’s dimension and weight, because it is a dedicated touch screen and so you can easily hold the camera with one hand while using the other hand to navigate your way through. For this very screen, the camera comes with just three buttons on its back; one’s a dedicated HD video recording option, the other for previewing your photos and the last to select between different features. And a few buttons on the top: On/off, shutter release and zoom.
Focus and Face Detection
The camera comes with a subject tracking AF which is pretty simple to activate in this way : all you do is press on the 3 inch LCD touch screen and so the shutter releases. The Auto focus performance is average but not to bad, it is simply quick enough for good luck . There comes in Nikon Coolpix S4300 the macro mode, henceforth you can come as close as 5 cm to your subject. It is in the camera’s given nature that the autofocus is fixed whilst you record videos. But there is also an option available for full-time auto focus. Face detection is also a given in the camera.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Nikon Coolpix S4300 comes with a 6x optical zoom that in equipped with 35 mm equivalent focal range of 26 – 156 mm. It has a wide angle Nikkor glass lens and also a fast autofocus. The aperture’s with f/3.5 at 26 mm to f/6.5 at 156 mm is a bit slow. There is also a macro mode, in which the camera can take pictures as close as 5 cm to your subjects, the pictures are neat. The lens is immensely helped by the Vibration Reduction anti-blurring technology, so your photos are kept clear and haze free. It’s a huge help too when taking photos at extended telephoto settings and slow shutter speed. Both the lens and Image stabilizer, work and complement each other to produce very fine photos and with the user giving less attention to being careful but carefree.
Screen and Menus
The camera is incorporated with a 3 inch LCD touch screen; the screen is finely grained and clear while the surface to it is silky and is very sensitive to touch. The screen’s 460.000 dot resolution. It is effective and easy, and people who are not prone to use buttons can easily work their way through this screen and its trouble-free interface. Almost anything can be accessed via the touch screen, as we enter the very rapid menu system. The basic’s simple, and the features such as Scene Mode, Special effects etc are all accessed through menu and it’s very large and interactive menu.
This compact point and shoot camera can last for about 180 shots approximately; all credits due to the Lithium ion batteries the Nikon Coolpix S4300 uses, there is an in camera charging. The camera is compatible with SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards for memory storage.
With a single press to the dedicated video button on the camera, Nikon Coolpix 4300 let’s you record high quality HD 720p videos with sound. The 1280 x 720 pixels resolution is pretty average and records video at 30 frames per second, this can however be tuned down to 640 x 480 pixels. Then once you’re done you can preview your videos on the camera’s LCD screen or an HDTV. The only set back is its inefficient M-JPEG encoding that eats up around 230MB/min.
The camera is a haven to a1/ 2.3 inch 12 megapixel CCD sensor. This is very effective and gives you great quality resolution, preserving clarity even after photos are printed and cropped. The camera can be altered to different mega pixel settings, from 8 mp, 4 mp, 2 mp and even in 4 : 3 aspect ratio in VGA quality and/or at 16 : 9 wide screen aspect ratio on 14 MP. Within high ISO sensitivity, from the given 80 – 1600, the highest 3200 works at a maximum 4 MP to capture photos. Also, noticeable is t he continuous mode where it can record up to 8 shots in 1.1fps, giving an idea of how the sensor is working.
For what it’s worth, the camera is a good buy for its money value. The touch screen works efficiently too. The Optical zoom is a definite plus in terms of performance and results and the camera is easy to use overall. Lastly, the photos come out very vivid.
The camera falls short in terms of detailing in the images and noise in the images. There is also a limited customization option but moreover, there is little manual freedom.
