Over all Review of Nikon D7100 DSLR Body Black
Nikon D7100 is the latest DSLR from Nikon, one of the biggest players in camera industry and is placed on the new upper mid-range DSLR which is aimed at all the enthusiasts and aspiring photographers and probably for those who are looking for a replacement for a higher-end device. Roughly two years after the predecessor Nikon D7000, it books its place right between Nikon D7000 and Nikon D600 in this range. Although currently Nikon D7000 is still maintained in the line-up but speculations are that it will soon be removed from the range. As claims made by the multinational Nikon D7100 is probably the best result of a DX, although the important thing to note here is that it is also the not so long-awaited semi-pro replacement for Nikon D300s. Just to be fair with Nikon, the specifications offered by Nikon D7100 Body Only are truly beyond the grasp of Nikon D300s but Nikon D7000 is still in the enthusiast rather than semi-pro category. Well the message from Nikon is quite clear” If you are looking for a semi-pro model, you will be looking at a device with a full frame sensor” and so it is highly unlikely that there will be a Nikon D400. Nikon, expectedly continues to push the boundaries of the upper mid-range and blurs the line it created wth the semi-pro category of devices.
Nikon D7100 comes with 100% coverage, 6 frames per second shooting and 2016 pixel pixel metering sensor and the twin SD card slots which re directly copy/pasted from its precursor. The new additions and upgradations are the increase of resolution by 50% to 24.1, a boost in the AutoFocus system from 39 to 51 points, 1080p Full HD video recording at 30 and 25 frames per second and an additional 24 frames per second, and the introduction of a new 1.3x crop mode which results in an overall field reduction at a resolution of 15.4 megapixels. And also Nikon D7100 now also fancies full weather sealing and also becomes only second DSLR from the company which can dispense with low pass filter for sharper images after Nikon D800E.
Design and Build Quality
The exact dimensions of Nikon D7100 measure 136mm x 107mm x 76mm, this makes the device 4mm wider, 4 mm taller and roughly about the same thickness as Nikon D7000. The weight of 675 grams makes Nikon D7100 lighter by 15 grams. The increase in dimensions will only increase the handling if there is going to be any effect at all as the weight has decreased. Anyhow, Nikon D7100 Body Only feels really comfortable in hands and the build quality has also improved significantly. Nikon D7100 features a highly improved grip and new texture of the mode dial, which as a result also features a new lock button which prevents it from unintentionally turning round. Like Nikon D7000, the top and rear plates of our model are also made of magnesium alloy which provide considerable strength and resistance to the dial, also in a highly welcome improvement the body of this device is now weather-sealed to the same extent as high end Nikon D800 and we believe Nikon when they say that the weather protection is greater than Nikon D7000.
Focus and Face Detection
Nikon seems more excited about increasing the number of AF points than any other camera manufacturer in the world, so it is hardly any surprise that Nikon D7000 has now upgraded to a 51 point AF system on the new Nikon D7100, and it is the MultiCAM 3500 DX from the earlier Nikon D300s that also sports 15 cross type sensors and works at f8 which is really handy if you are making the use of teleconvertors. The 2016 pixel RGB metering sensor still remains in Nikon D7000.
Lens and Image Stabilization
This is a body only review, as a Body Only product, Nikon D7100 is not equipped with any lens. As such, for Super Wide angle Nikon 10-24mm lens, for wide angle Nikon 24-70mm lens, for telephoto Nikon 70-200mm lens and for super telephoto Nikon 55-300mm lens are available. As fixed lenses, the options of Nikon 28mm f/1.8G AF-S, Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX, Nikon 50mm f/1.4G AF-S SIC SW Prime, Nikon 85mm f/1.8G AF-S, Nikon 105mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR Micro are also made available.
Screen and Menus
One of the highlight features of Nikon D7100 is the screen which almost occupies the entire rear with massive 3.2 inch screen size. The specifications of this screen include a brilliant 1229k detailed pixel resolution with with approx. 170 degree viewing angle, approx. 100% frame coverage and brightness adjustment.
Nikon D7100 is powered by a EN-EL15 Rechargeable Li-ion Battery which is fully capable of shooting around 450 shots. An AC adapter is also made available.
Like its precursor, Nikon D7100 will shoot 1080p video, but rather than being limited to just 24p, the new model also offers 25p and 30p options. The 1.3x crop mode is also supported for video, although the recording format changes from progressive to interlaced with the choice of 50i or 60i. The maximum recording time in normal quality is 29:59 or 20 minutes of high quality.
With Nikon D3200 and Nikon D5200 both making the use of 24 megapixel DX format sensors, it was highly unlikely that Nikon D7100 does not do the same, but then there are atleast two key differences. The first difference here is that it is considerably fast, while supporting the same 6 frames per seconds that was featured in Nikon D7000 albeit having 50% more pixels per frame; second, and actually more improtantly it does not employ an optical low pass filter. Nikon 3100 offers a new 1.3x crop mode to extend the effective reach of telephoto lenses. This option is effectively applying a 1.3x crop to an existing 1.5x crop due to the DX-format sensor, which by Nikon's calculations results in a total field reduction factor of 1.95x.
1. High-pixel count
2. No low-pass filter
4. Dual SD card slots
1. No Wi-Fi built-in
2. Not touchscreen
3. Fixed screen
4. JPEG only HDR mode
