The all new Olympus VG 170 promises to give a convenient and compact experience with the 14 megapixel point and shoot camera. The camera boasts of a ½.3 inch CCD sensor and has 5 aspherical lens with 7 lenses grouped into 5 to give a 5x wide zoom. The net digital zoom is 4x/20x combined with the optical zoom power. The Olympus VG 170 has a TFT colored monitor of 3.0 inches having a resolution of 460000 dots. It comes with 2 levels of brightness adjustment and also has frame assistance along with protection panel. It comes with ESP light metering modes and many exposure control modes. The photographers find the high ISO sensitivity of this camera very appealing which is up to 1600 and also has magic filter and white balance. The Internal Flash can be adjusted to AUTO, Red-eye reduction, Long flash, Fill-in or off mode. The camera also supports Sequential shooting mode at a rate of 0.6 fps / 200 frames (Full Image Size). It allows image processing with noice reduction, shading and distortion compensation. Playback index is available in a 5x4 frame with auto rotation. Movie Recording System records movies in AVI Motion JPEG format. It supports HD Movie quality in 720P. It has an efficient sound recording system with voice playback and speaker. The olymus VG 170 has an internal memory of 34.9MB which can be expanded using SD / SDHC or eye-fi card. The camera shows the menu in 40 languages and has a menu guide for user help. Images are automatically dates with the date imprint function. Design and Build Quality
The camera measuring 103.7mm x 62.5mm x 22.2 mm and weighing 147grams is portable and available in black, white and pink colors. The flash dominates the front of the camera being even larger than the 5x optical zoom lens barrel. A leatherette grip on the front supports the camera which has a power button on top along side a shutter. The TFT colored 3 inch wide LCD has on its right a single button for the menu and a navigation pad. The back of the camera has a playback button and a dedicated video record button along with the monitor. The bendy rubber used in making this camera accounts for its budget efficiency. The bad part is the battery cover which does not have a smooth finish to it. The Olympus VG 170 has a permanent on-screen menu for user help.
Focus and Face Detection
The Olympus DSLR technology is lost somewhere VG-170 is pretty rapid at focusing. With two macro facilities, macro and supermacro, the Olympus VG 170 gives image quality like the best of the pint and shoot cameras. Normal macro has a close focusing of 20cm-infinity at wide while normal focusing is 60cm to infinity. Supermacro has a focusing of 5cm. however in the supermacro mode, the zoom automatically gets diabled. Apart from being speedy the focus is also very sharp. It also has a AF illuminator and works on TTL iESP auto focus with contrast detection. The camera supports face and smile detection and can recognise familiar faces to focus automaticaly on them.
Lens and Image Stabilization
The olympus VG 170 has an Optical zoom of 5x with a socal length of 4.7mm - 23.5 mm. This is possible becaise of the lens made by including 7 lenses in 5 gropus and made up of 5 aspherical glass elements. The camera has a maximum aperture of 2.8 - 6.5. The maximum combined zoom comes out to be 4x/20x along with the optical zoom to catch memories in the perfect way! Itsupports ESP light metering mode and has different options for white balance adjustment. The exposure control is done by choosing from i-Auto, Programme automatic, DIS mode, Scene Modes, Magic Filter, Panorama, Movie, Beauty & Make-up which can be adjusted up to +/- 2 EV / 1/3 steps. It also sports a Digital Image Stabilisation and an advanced Face Detection Technology.
Screen and Menus
The camera has a 3inch wide TFT color screen with a resolution of 460000 dots. It comes with a protection panel, 2 levels of brightness adjustment and frame assistance. The menu has a single button because of a permanent menu system on-screen while shooting which covers the flash. 6 tabs appear on pressing the menu button which have a specific allocation and can be chosen by using the navigation pad. The menu is user friendly with an explanation for each tab which is available in 40 different languages. The playback button shows the previously taken pictures which can be rotated, edited or processed. Options like red eye reduction, crop, brightness adjustment make the picture perfect! The camera supports DC input and also Combined A/V & USB output with a 2.0 High Speed USB.
The Olympus VG 170 uses a Li-50B lithium ion battery with internal charging thus having no need to carry along the battery charger.
The Olympus VG 170 allows full HD movie recording in AVI motion JPEG format with digital image stabilization. It support video viewing in Frame by frame, Fast forward and Reverse playback modes. A 720 pixel HD movie can be recorded up to the capacity if the card with a quality of 640 x 480 / 30fps. The magic filter allows editing with options of Pop Art, Pin Hole, Fisheye, Drawing, Soft Focus, Punk, Water color, Reflection. The sound recording system record in WAV format and has sound playback with a stereo system.
