Expert Review of Panasonic Lumix DMC FZ47
Panasonic Lumix FZ47, like its predecessor FZ45, comes with a wide-angle 24x optical zoom lens, full manual controls and a 3-inch screen, allowing you to get creative while shooting. Other than this, you can select a lot of creative filters or scene modes to let you add style to your photos. FZ47 is an update over FZ45 with a 12MP sensor, which may sound a bit absurd since FZ45 held a 14.1MP sensor but with nearly 2MP down, FZ47 has been added with circuitry to produce low on noise images and better image quality. Moreover, with this camera, full HD video recording has come in place of HD video recording. The camera is very competent and an all-rounder providing feature rich specifications with high emphasis on image quality. FZ47 has been competitively priced and is expected to prove itself as great choice for both, novices and professionals alike.
Design and Build Quality
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 has its design cues similar to FZ45, the one it replaces. Just the side print and name let you know that it is one of the very few differences between 45 and 48. When you observe closely, you will find that the autofocus lamp has been moved. There is an additional zoom control with buttons for focusing at the left side of the lens, some quality buttons at the back, extra grip about the lens and burst mode at the top. FZ47 also adds a miniature mode at Full high-definition. There is a large rubberized hand grip at the front and a textured grip at the rear. The mode dial makes choosing of modes an easy task. The camera is packed with all manual controls wherein, the aperture and shutter priority can be manually selected. A number of scene modes on dial allow access to what they have been labelled with such as, Normal, Outdoor, Indoor and Soft Skin.
Focus and Face Detection
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 delivers a quick focus performance with its quick autofocus turned on. The shutter response and shot-to-shot time are all quick and the burst mode shoot is nowhere close to FZ150, but at 2.5fps. The high-speed continuous shooting can be availed under scene modes with image resolution reduced to 3MP with a frame rate set at 8fps. Also, another, high-speed continuous shoot mode with flash can be availed at 3MP that shoots at every .6 seconds. The focusing modes are Autofocus, Manual, Spot, Face Detection, AF Tracking and Multi. For macro shots, the minimum focusing distance is 1cm.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 comes with a 24x optical zoom lens that covers a maximum aperture range of f/2.8 – f/5.2. The focal length covers 25mm – 600mm in 35mm terms. The detail in images taken at both the ends - full zoom out (wide-angle) and full zoom in (telephoto) of the lens is good. The macro shots are excellent, letting you focus on objects that are right in front of the lens. Purple fringing is there but low given the long zoom capability, and is visible in the high-contrast areas of the frame. Power optical Image stabilization is also offered on this camera. The lens also comes with nano-surface coating.
Screen and Menus
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 has a well laid and easy to use menu system where each segment has been coded with color. The options in menu are Setup, Record, Motion Picture and under the Playback option, the sub-menus are Setup, playback and playback mode respectively. There are seven pages for setup options, 5 for recording options and 3 for playback. The text is clear and can be easily read out. The display is 3 inches wide and resolution of the screen is 460k dots.
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 comes rated with 400 shots as per CIPA standards but in real, you will be able to take 400 shots before the battery runs out. This means that you will be able to continue shooting for a number of days sans worries of charging the battery. The battery type used here is Li-ion with a capacity of 895mAh. Moreover, in the shipped bundle, you can find a charger for the battery.
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 records Full HD videos with resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels at a frame rate of 30fps - a great improvement over the pervious FZ45 that recorded videos only at 720p resolution. Optical zoom can be used while you are recording videos and the quality of videos shot is good enough. The inbuilt image stabilization helps in getting better images but if you intend to use full zoom, a tripod for better stability is recommended.
Panasonic Lumix FZ47 comes with a high-speed CCD sensor with a resolution of 12.1MP. The size of the sensor is 1/2.33 inch with pixels width and height of 4000 pixels and 3000 pixels respectively. The aspect ratios are 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1. The ISO sensitivity range begins from ISO100, where the noise is low and increases as you go up to ISO200. With ISO400, you will see an increment in color spots (chroma Noise), and with ISO800, noise touches another level with loss in colors of the image. ISO1600 is where you see a lot of noise and struggle of chroma to cut down on chroma noise. For higher ISO settings, you have to enter the scene mode and choose a high ISO, which results in the image size being cut down to 3MP.
