Samsung EX1 Description

Samsung EX1 is a compact camera of its kind, a fact that will draw upon you once you have a look at it. It sports a 10MP sensor and a fast wide optical zoom inside a metal body. The max aperture you can get is of f/1.8-2.4 with a focal length range of 24-72mm. The sensor is slightly smaller than 1/1.7inches. The camera comes with an articulated 3inches wide AMOLED screen that offers excellent color reproduction and contrast, and you can view the display in bright sunlight. The resolution is of 614k dot, which means the pictures look quite sharp when you are reviewing them. The screen does add to the weight of the camera. There are two dials to work with; one at the top of the handgrip and the other, which doubles as the four-way controller wherein, the former manages the shutter speed in priority mode, and manual one and exposure in all modes, the latter manages aperture in aperture and manual modes. At the top, another two dials manage shoot modes and drive modes. The biggest strength of this camera is its Schneider Kreuznach lens. The combination of such a lens with a large sensor makes it demand more light than other cameras of the same clan but that is what makes it stand apart. The zoom covers the entire focal length range. At wide-angle, you might find some negligible softness at the corner. It controls the chromatic aberration but the distortion at wide-angle is something you can’t handle when you are shooting it RAW. When using JPEGs they get over-sharpened slightly and a slight halo effect could be seen on the edges at high-contrast. In both, RAW and JPEG, on an average, the quality of photos are impressive. When taken to higher ISOs, the quality gets affected though the same is visible in other digicams also. The video mode presents a sad concern for the max quality you can work over is MP4 format with aspect pixels 640x480 at 30fps. There is no option to shoot your videos at HD, even though you are getting a dedicated movie record button. Samsung EX1 does give you liberty to pause and resume shooting, and zoom while you do that. More to it is that you can chose whether to record the zoom motors or mute the soundtrack until you are done with zooming. Looking at the bigger picture, Samsung EX1 offers itself as a fairly nice camera for the enthusiasts. The lens does work well enough and the quality of images produced is quite high, at least for the decent sized prints.
