Samsung PL100 Description
Samsung PL100 features something really unprecedented, the dual LCD. If LCD at the rear is for framing and composing the scenes, then the LCD at the front is for making self-portraits. But that's not all, for if you talk of the design then there is an ergonomic slant to the shutter as well as a 7 degree slant at the bottom, which serves the purpose that if the camera is placed on a flat surface, the lens takes up an angle for better self-portraits. The camera feels quite inexpensively brought up. It is only Gloss Black and Silver Trim. The fingerprints can easily take over the gloss. The LCD at the back is not of great quality, the AF and lens movement are loud. The black buttons have black markings, so unless there is full light, you cannot get full view of buttons. The buttons labeled White are only Menu and Delete. The camera is simple in usage. At the top, you have zoom, shutter, and button to turn off the front LCD. One press puts on the self-portraits, second sets it for a couple shot and third press gets ready for children mode. Couple shot catches the pic as the two subjects lean towards each other. The children mode plays animation in front LCD to lure the children to look at the camera. The stills can be shot at 0.6fps for as long the finger is on the shutter release. There is a motion capture feature that shoots off 30 photos at nearly 6fps but that too at VGA resolution. The screen blacks out nearly every time. So at times, you don't have any idea of what you are shooting. The AEB feature, abbreviated as Auto Exposure Bracketing is a setting that will take three shots that too, underexposed, normal and overexposed.
The camera picks from 16 different scene types in its Smart Auto feature. There is the regular auto mode as well that comes with settings for face, smile, blink detection and focus areas. The program Auto lets you achieve control over ISO, white balance. There is a slider for managing sharpness, contrast, and saturation. A sad point is that there is no optical image stabilization but digital image stabilization. Samsung PL100's F3-5.6, 35-105mm lens, 35mm equivalent, does not let you achieve flexibility in shooting. The sharpness at the center is quite good and the corners keep getting softer at the corners. The color reproduction from this camera isn't always that accurate.
