Samsung ST70 Description
Samsung ST70 comes with thin, stainless steel body measuring 16mm with lens closed and has an angled base at 7 degree from the vertical. At the rear there is an excellent 2.7-inch wide screen, viewable enough in bright sunlight. The physical controls have been laid out quite well. At the top there are some more buttons like shutter release, its ease of use comes with the slight tilt forward. There is no mode dial, so switching between modes becomes a difficult task. The camera has been designed to look more stylish and like an accessory to flaunt. ST70 comes with 14.2 MP, 1/2.33in CCD sensor. The lens has effective specs of 27-135mm f/3.5-5.9 lens. The lens work is fine, it doesn't suffer from much distortion at both the ends - wide and telephoto. At the maximam zoom, the images get softer, even at the centre of the frame. The ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 3200, at the lowest of sensitivities the noise levels are quite down. The noise starts to appear at ISO 800 or above. The resolution quickly goes down to drain.
In the Smart Auto mode the results aren't that great. Switching over to program mode is advisable. It removes a lot of processing and the faces look even more natural as outcome. If you are outside the ST70 makes quite an effort to take well constructed, well-exposed pics. The dynamic range isn't rich though. This comes due packing of 14 million pixels in such small sensor. The quality of video is also not that impressive. The camera's other sad points points inflate here with the SD card format. Since the dimensions are tiny so SD has to be micro only. The camera was expected to be slightly larger with an SDHC slot. Micro SD cards are quite tiny and are easy to lose. If you got a really important work going on in a camera, then you would have to keep a lot of care, since all the data, photos, videos are crammed into that small microSD. Overall the reason for discontinuing the camera in India is apparent. The quality photos and videos cannot be achieved in comparison to the contemporary cameras around. For example, Fujifilm's FinePix F70EXR, that is currently running as people's favorite camera is slightly expensive than Samsung ST70 and delivers all that Samsung ST70 doesn't. The camera isn't a necessity to buy, it is just an option.
