Expert Review of Maruti Alto 800 Base
Maruti Suzuki is credited for bringing in Automobile revolution in India. They were the first company produce cars in at a large scale and sell more than 10 lakhs. In the year 2000, they launched Maruti Alto which has been shattering the record charts ever since then. It has been tagged with the label of best selling hatchback in India. And it single handedly took Maruti Suzuki venture to new heights. Although Alto had been in production since 1979 but it was after more than 20 years that India got a taste with the fifth generation Alto that was an Indian Built version. And this time after twelve years, Maruti decided to give it a fresh new start under the tag name of Alto 800. Under the hood, Maruti Alto 800 Base has the same engine that the previous model had. But there have been many tweaks and changes done to add good amount of power, fuel efficiency and performance. The outer body has been made more compact, high mounted headlights and has got striking looks too. The change in outer body allows opening up more space in the inside. In first look, the interiors look much more organized and certain new elements have also been added to it. Also Maruti has decided to provide some optional package like the airbag, CNG kit to go with car.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
The fuel economy alone is the biggest factor contributing for the sale for the Maruti Alto 800 Base. As there are no major specifications changed in the engine and transmission system but has got some new tweaks and modifications, Maruti claims that this car will gain a major improvement in fuel efficiency with 22.7kmpl( as in the ARAI tests). Also the light weight and the dynamicity significantly contribute to this fuel efficiency.
Originally the Alto was launched in 6 colors namely Ecru Beige, Superior White, Midnight Black, Fire Brick Red, Blue Blaze and Silky Silver. And the similar shades are available with the all new Maruti Alto 800 Base and company says that they would be shortly rolling out new ones also.
Acceleration and Pick up
The F8D engine produces a decent acceleration in the all new Alto 800 and many tests show that the 100km mark can be reached with a time difference of about two seconds than the previous one, that time being 16.4 seconds. And the car manufacturers claim that the Maruti Alto 800 Base can easily hit the top speed of 160kmph.
On first look, it looks completely different from the original Alto; it’s a very simple design. It has high mounted headlights, “c” pillar at the rear of the car helps determine that this is an Alto. It has been built using the same platform but with a completely different body which is a taller. The petal shaped headlamps, open mouthed look with a 2 part grille; character lines across the doors all look beautiful. The rear also has petal shaped tail lamps and concavity too. The roof of the car also gets stiffness to keep the rigidity. Overall, this new Maruti Alto 800 Base looks quite modish and will appeal to the gen next.
The Alto 800 opens up good amount of space inside the car and the interiors are of good quality also. The centre console has been crafted with a chrome finish. The air conditioner vents which were rectangular earlier are now changed to circular shapes for better circulation of air. The legroom for rear seats definitely has more space. And for storage needs, the rear seats can also be folded for additional boot space. There is a 3 spoke steering wheel and one single meter instrument panel gives a good look. Also for more convenience, a small space has also opened up just above the glove box and there is more space around the central tunnel for storing bottle, magazines etc.
The new Alto 800 is more compacted than ever before. The dimensions have changed a bit; the overall length, width and height are 3395mm X 1490mm X 1475mm. The wheelbase hasn’t been changed and it measures out to be 2360mm. The weight of the car comes down to 720kgs. And it has a fuel tank capacity of 35litres.
The Alto 800 relies on the tried and tested F8D engine which has 13 valves and 3 cylinders for its power and high performance. Also there has been many small changes and modifications been done to add up the overall power, torque and fuel efficiency. The maximum power output is 48bhp at the rate of 6000rpm and the improvement of maximum torque to 68.6Nm at the rate of 3500rpm. The manual transmission with 5 speed gearbox has also been improved; it is now a cable shift which feels better without the jerks and hiccups.
The tyres are of decent quality which can easily survive he shocks and wear and tear offered by the road. The tyre type is 145/80 R12, 12inch being the tyre size. And the very good ground clearance of 160mm is big enough to look odd from certain angles.
The all new Alto 800 has gone with the same suspension system as it was before. The front suspension is a gas filled Mac Pherson strut which has a torsion roll control device. And the rears suspension has a coil spring as usual but also comes with a three link rigid axle and isolating trailing arm. And the rear suspension has also got the similar gas filled shock absorbers.
Handling and Control
The front brakes are the solid disc brakes and the rear brakes are the drum brakes. Both of these provide a good control over the Alto 800. Also the addition of gas dampers has made the car more dynamic too. Plus the power assisted steering has good weight distribution and stiffness. The handling and controls are great considering that is a small car and can easily pass through tighter curves.
