Expert Review of Hyundai i20
Hyundai Motors India Limited has recently rolled out the updated version of its premium hatchback in the country's automobile market. It is also renamed as Elite i20 and is it introduced in a five diesel and petrol variants. Among those, Hyundai Elite i20 Era 1.2 is the entry level petrol variant that is equipped with a 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine.This motor is capable of producing a maximum power of 81.9bhp along with a commanding torque output of 114.7Nm. The car maker has given major cosmetic update, especially to its exteriors by revising the radiator grille, headlight cluster and bumpers. Also, its gets glossy black B pillars, which gives a sophisticated look to its exteriors. At the same time, it also modified the interiors by equipping a newly designed dashboard that brings it a refined look. The car maker has revised its center fascia along with the instrument panel and equipped some of the utility aspects like a storage compartment and accessory power socket. Its interiors are furnished with highly comfortable seats featuring integrated head rests, which are covered with good quality fabric upholstery. As far as its features are concerned, this entry level trim is bestowed with all the standard aspects like manual AC unit, motor driving electric power steering and front power windows. On the other hand, this entry level trim also gets some crucial safety aspects like an engine immobilizer, dual horn, an inside rear view mirror with day/night effect and central locking system for doors including tailgate.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
This base trim is equipped with a 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine that has multi point fuel injection system. This engine helps the vehicle to deliver a mileage of 13.3 Kmpl (in city roads), which goes up to a maximum of 18.6 Kmpl on highways.
The car maker is currently offering this hatchback with a total of seven attraction body paint options. These include a radiant looking Passion Red, Sleek Silver, Mystic Blue, Pristine Blue, Polar White, Star Dust and Midas Gold.
Acceleration and Pick up
Its Kappa 1197cc engine is based on DOHC valve configuration with four cylinders and 16-valves. It is paired with a five speed manual transmission gearbox, which helps it to break a 100 Kmph speed barrier in about 15 to 16 seconds. At the same time, it can go up to a maximum speed of approximately 140 to 145 Kmph, which is quite good.
This newly introduced hatchback looks completely different from its previous model. The automaker has revised its radiator grille and given it a hexagonal shaped, which is accentuated by thick chrome surround. It is flanked by a newly designed headlight cluster that has been equipped with conventional halogen lamps and turn indicators. The front bonnet looks flat but has a pair of expressive lines, which gives it an urbane appeal. The front bumper also gets a new structure featuring integrated spoiler that adds to its stylish look. The side profile too gets a new look, owing to its glossy black B and C pillars. Its door handles and the ORVM caps are in body color while the window sills are in black. Its wheel arches are neatly carved and have been skilfully fitted with a set of conventional steel wheels including full wheel caps. The rear profile looks extremely stylish, owing to its wide taillight cluster that has a new lighting pattern. Its windscreen and the tailgate have been retained, which are embedded with stylish company’s insignia. The car maker has also updated the rear bumper and has equipped it with a pair of reflectors along with a protective cladding.
This Hyundai Elite i20 Era 1.2 is the entry level variant and yet it gets some of the important aspects. Its dashboard is equipped with a proficient air conditioning system, which keeps the environment cool irrespective of temperature outside. This trim also features an advanced instrument panel that is equipped with a dual trip meter, tachometer, digital clock, gear shift indicator, low fuel warning, door ajar notification and a driver’s seat belt reminder. Apart from these, it has utility features including door map pockets, front passenger seat back pocket and metal finish inside door handles. Furthermore, it has clutch foot rest, passenger vanity mirror, ticket holder, front power outlet, intermittent front wiper, lane change indicator, internally adjustable outside mirrors and front power windows featuring time lag and illuminated switches.
This hatchback has a total length of 3985mm along with a decent width of 1734mm. Its total height measures about 1505mm and its ground clearance at 170mm. This vehicle has a very large wheelbase of 2570mm, which creates ample leg space inside.
Powering this entry level variant is the 1.2-litre Kappa VTVT petrol engine that has a displacement capacity of 1197cc. It has four cylinders, and 16-valves that receive fuel through multi point injection system. it can produce a maximum power of 81.9bhp at 6000rpm that results in producing a maximum torque output of 114.7Nm at 4000rpm. Its front wheels extract the torque output through an advanced five speed manual transmission gearbox.
The Hyundai Elite i20 Era 1.2 is the entry level variant and it is equipped with a set of 14 inch steel wheels. These rims have full wheel covers and are covered with a set of tubeless radial tyres of size 185/70 R14, which provides excellent grip on roads.
This vehicle is blessed with a robust suspension system that keeps the vehicle stable and well balanced. Its front axle is fitted with McPherson Strut system and the rear axle is fitted with coupled torsion beam suspension. Both the axles are further loaded with coil springs and gas filled shock absorbers, which enables the vehicle to deal with jerks caused on roads.
Handling and Control
Its front wheels have been equipped with a set of high performance disc brakes and paired the rear ones with drum brakes, which delivers a reliable performance. The car maker has also integrated a motor driven electric power assisted steering system that provides superior response and makes handling quite comfortable.
