Expert Review of Maruti Alto K10
The Maruti Alto K10 is the improvised version of well known Maruti Alto and has been launched in the market by Maruti Suzuki Inc. The "K10" suffix that has been added to its name clearly indicates that it is different from the original. In fact, it instantly brings to everyone's notice that Maruti Alto K10 has a dazzling new generation three-cylinder engine under its hood. The exterior profile of Alto K10 also reinforces the idea that it has a better and bigger new engine. The front overhang of this car is long and this increase the engine bay length to accomodate the new and powerful K10 engine. The new Alto K10 has been made more fuel efficient and in harsher conditions offers better ride quality than its predecessor, original Maruti Alto.
Maruti Alto K10 is much more contemporary , brings along a stronger engine and is thus capable of taking on its rivals with renewed energy. It also gives its buyers the reliability of Maruti's extensive service network. Although, Maruti Alto is a well renounced car in India as it has been around for more than a decade now , its looks were not that admirable. From long the need to make it more appealing was on the minds of the makers. Now that, it has received a nose job and got a fresh look, we expect that people will turn again towards this car with new fervour and its sales will rise.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
The small engines coupled with correct sized motors easily propel bulk at lower throttle openings which deliver not just fuel efficiency but also enhance the fun in the drive.
Thus, in terms of fuel efficiency, the Maruti Alto K10 managed to stand out.
As per the claims made, in the city, the car delivers 16.3kmpl while on the highway it delivers an impressive 26.3kmpl, which translated to an overall figure of 18.8kmpl. The certified test figure is 20.2 kmpl fuel economies for the Alto K10.
Maruti Alto K10 is available in many striking colors like sunlight copper, blaze blue, midnight black, fire brick red, superior white, ecru beige and silky silver.
Acceleration and Pick up
The Maruti Alto K10 zooms away into the distance touching a 0-100 kmph sprint in mere 13.3 seconds. It attains a maximum speed of approximately 153 kmph (confirm source)
The interiors of Maruti Alto K10 are also far more pleasing than the old Alto. The upholstery including color coordinated door pads match the fabric on the seats. Other details include integrated head rests in the rear seats, a rear parcel tray and a new three-spoke steering wheel complemented by a stylish new design gear shift knob.
The instrument panel includes a large speedometer with a nice and novel face flanked on either side by a rev counter and a digital fuel gauge. It also features a three pod layout that also includes a tachometer alongside which makes it easy to read dials. There is no standard stereo offered.
On the exterior, there are distinguished cosmetic revisions in the Maruti Alto K10 at both the front and the rear ends. There is an all new grille treatment and bold eagle-eye headlamps and these complements well with the new bonnet and bumper which houses small fog lamps.
There is loads of new found appeal on the rear as well, with a slightly revised tail gate treatment along with a new tail lamp cluster which merges classily into the bumper.
The Alto also gets stylish rubbing strips on its flanks. Overall, the car sits well on its larger wheels to create a more in-tune with the times attitude. The style accents may be minimal but overall they are well executed.
The Maruti Alto K10 is available in two variants LXi and VXi. The LXi basically offers power steering and air conditioning. The VXi, in addition offers front power windows, front fog lamps, central locking and an electronic trip meter.
Alto K10 is longer by 125 mm than its older variant to make room for bigger K-10 engine. The K10 version measures 3620mm in length. The ground clearance of the car is 160 mm with 4.6 meters turning radius that helps take on traffic and parking challenges of the city.
In terms of the engine, Maruti Alto K10 car is powered by three-cylinder units and displaces 998cc. The K10 engine is definitely one of the best in its class and is also the only 1.0 litre twin cam engine available in India. The engine produces 68PS at 6200rpm and a torque rating of 90Nm at 3500 rpm. It has 5-speed transmissions and is smooth to operate. On the whole, the K10 engine is more powerful and offers a less stressful drive.
The K10 engine ups the power and torque by nearly 50 per cent over the older version. Alto is made slightly heavy with a weight of about 770 kg to deliver an impressive power to weight figure of 88.88PS per tonne. The performance of this car is top-class in the upper A1-lower A2 category.
Maruti Alto K10 run on 155/65 section tubeless radials mounted on 13-inch rims.
The suspension setup of Maruti Alto K10 includes MacPherson at the front and torsion beam at the rear. The enhanced performance capabilities of the Maruti Alto K10 to ride better over scarred roads and potholes are also attributed to the improved brakes and the suspension system.
The gas filled shock absorbers are employed and the brakes have been enlarged to take advantage of the larger wheels. Plus, the electronically assisted rack and pinion steering gear comes as a standard fitment.
Handling and Control
In terms of handling,Alto's steering felt better in terms of precision and feedback on the track. Also, the Alto’s body roll is considerably less and consequently it is goes around corners easily.
Maruti Alto K10 delivers a peppy performance. With 998 cc three cylinder “k10B” engine gives a high torque of 90Nm @ 3500 rpm with low emission and low NVH. As a result, the power and fuel efficiency of this car is commendable. Alto K10 is also high on safety as it has high grade and improved suspension and brake system along with side impact beams.
Maruti Alto K10 is good performance-wise but still uses the same cheap plastic and unappealing dashboard as its earlier version. The wheel size is more but the ground clearance has remained same, which results in problems. There are no day/night mirrors. In terms of space, the front offers decent space but at the rear, it is hard to feel comfortable since the car is narrow. Some sculpting has been done to the front seats to allow a bit of more knee room for the rear seat passengers but it has not made any significant difference.
