Expert Review of Nissan Sunny
Nissan Motors has officially introduced the facelifted version of its flagship sedan, Sunny in the automobile market. This time, the car maker has introduced it in three petrol and five diesel variants for the buyers to choose from. This 2014 Nissan Sunny gets refined cosmetics in terms of both exteriors and interiors. On the other hand, this 2014 version comes with a slew of new features including an improved 2-DIN music system with Bluetooth connectivity, and a rear view camera with display on 5.1-inch infotainment system. It is also integrated with a navigation function that helps to choose right direction. The car maker has made slight modification to the diesel engine, while retaining its petrol engine without any update. All the diesel variants are powered by a 1461cc K9K engine, which is mated with a five speed manual transmission gearbox. While the petrol versions have been equipped with 1.5-litre, HR15 engine. This motor is available with five-speed manual and CVT automatic transmission gearbox option. This facelifted version is all about redesigned cosmetics, especially in terms of exteriors. It comes with a brand new headlight cluster along with a pronounced radiator grille, and redesigned bumpers. At the same time, the car maker is also offering a set of Y-shaped, 12-spoke style alloy wheels, which gives it an asserting look. However, these rims are available for XV and other top end variants. Coming to the interiors, this vehicle comes with a robust interior design, which is complimented by piano black central console. At the same time, it steering wheel is also redesigned, which further adds to the elegance of interiors. This 2014 version comes with driver air bag and ABS+EBD as standard across all the variants. It will now lock horns with the likes of Ford Fiesta, Hyundai Verna and Honda City in the Indian automobile market.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
This 2014 version is available with petrol and diesel engine options for the buyers to choose from. The diesel version sports a 1.5-litre dCi engine that comes with an improved engine control management system. As a result of this, its fuel efficiency has been increased to 22.71 Kmpl, which is 1Kmpl more than its earlier version. While the petrol version is equipped with the same 1.5-litre engine that has multi point fuel injection system. Its manual version can deliver a maximum mileage of 16.95 Kmpl while the CVT version has the ability to produce a maximum mileage of 17.97 Kmpl, which is quite good.
This facelifted version is available in a total of six exterior paint options for the buyers to choose from. The list includes Blade Silver, Bronze Grey, Onyx Black, Deep Grey, Pearl White and a radiant Nightspade color.
Acceleration and Pick up
The petrol variants are fitted with a 1498cc, HR15 engine that is based on a DOHC valve configuration. Its CVT version helps the vehicle to break the 100 Kmph speed mark in 12.11 seconds, while the manual version takes about 12.89 seconds. On the other hand, both these versions helps the vehicle to achieve a top speed of approximately 165 Kmph. While the diesel version has been equipped with a 1461cc engine that has 4-cylinders and 16-valves. This motor is mated with a five speed manual gearbox, which helps it to breach a 100 Kmph mark from a standstill in 13.9 seconds. At the same time, it powers the vehicle to zoom towards a top speed in the range of 150 to 160 Kmph.
The external appearance of this facelifted version looks quite stunning owing to its refurbished cosmetics. Its front facade gets a newly designed headlight cluster, which is incorporated with a powerful halogen lamps and turn indicators. In the center, there is a pronounced radiator grille that has a thick chrome surround and horizontally positioned strips. The front bumper gets a rugged design with wide air dam and refurbished fog lamps. In addition to these, fog lamp console have been affixed with a set of chrome strips, which gives a magnificent look to the front facade. Its bonnet is now designed with a pair of expressive lines, which further adds to its elegance. Its side profile gets a minor tweak but it looks mostly identical to the outgoing model. However, its wheel arches are now equipped with a set of Y-shaped, 12-spoke alloy wheels. These rims are available only for XV and XV premium variants while the XE and XL trims have been bestowed with conventional steel wheels. It’s base and mid range variants have body colored door handles while the top end XV variants have chrome handles. The external wing mirror gets a minor tweak and it is now equipped with an LED side blinker. In addition to these, the window waistline gets a chrome treatment, which further emphasizes its elegance. The rear profile looks mostly identical to the previous model. However, the taillight cluster gets an expressive lighting scheme, which amplifies the rear profile. Its body colored bumper is now fitted with a black colored protective strip, which gives it an urbane look. The overall new look of this vehicle is complimented by the stylish company’s insignia affixed to the boot lid.
The car maker is offering this latest sedan with new set of features, which makes it more competitive. Variants like XL and XL CVT are integrated with rear parking sensors while the XV and XV premium trim have rear camera with visuals on central infotainment screen. At the same time, it gets an improved 2-DIN music system that also supports Bluetooth connectivity along with USB and AUX-In sockets. Furthermore, XL and other top end variants are integrated with an automatic air conditioning unit including rear air con vents that keeps the ambiance cool. Its entry level trim has standard features like manual anti dazzling room mirror, tilt adjustable power steering, manual AC unit, and front power windows with driver’s side auto down function. In addition to these, the XL trim has electrically adjustable outside mirrors, all four power windows, remote key less entry, a multi-functional steering wheel, and driver’s seat height adjuster. While the XV trim also comes with a rear comfort fan, intelligent key with push button ignition, and Electric Park and fold door mirrors. The XV Premium Leather trim is available with leather seat covers. This sedan has some of the utility aspects including front sun visors with passenger’s side vanity mirror, glove box compartment, drink holders and outside temperature display. This model is also incorporated with an advanced instrument cluster that has a speedometer, tachometer, trip-meter, fuel gauge and average fuel consumption.
This 2014 version of Sunny comes with the same set of dimensions like its earlier version. It has a total length of 4455mm along with a decent width of 1695mm. Its total height is calculated at 1515mm, while the ground clearance is at just 165mm. At the same time, it comes with a large wheelbase of 2600mm, which determines the cabin space. This sedan has a huge boot compartment of 490 litres along with a decent fuel storage capacity of 41-litres.
This facelifted version comes with the same petrol and diesel engine options. Its petrol variants are equipped with a DOHC based 1.5-litre, HR15 mill that has a displacement capacity of 1498cc. It comprises of 4-cylinders and 16-valves that receives fuel through a multi-point injection system. This petrol motor has the ability to produce a maximum power of 98.7bhp at 6000rpm, which helps in generating a peak torque output of 134Nm at just 4000rpm. This petrol mill comes with an option to choose between five speed manual and CVT X-Tronic automatic transmission gearbox. On the other hand, the diesel variants are equipped with 1.5-litre dCi engine that has common rail fuel injection system. It has four cylinders and 16-valves that makes a total displacement capacity of 1461cc. it has the ability to belt out a peak power of 84.8bhp at 3750rpm, while yielding a commanding torque output of 2000rpm. This K9K diesel motor is skilfully paired with a five speed manual gearbox, that helps the engine to deliver a flawless performance.
The XE and XL variants are blessed with a set of conventional 14-inch steel wheels, which are covered with 185/70 R14 sized tubeless radial tyres. While the top end XV and XV premium trims have been bestowed with a set of 15-inch, 12-spoke styled alloy wheels. These rims have been covered with high performance radial tyres of size 185/65 R15.
This vehicle is blessed with a robust suspension system that can keep the vehicle stable by absorbing all the jerks. Its front axle is fitted with McPherson Strut and the rear one is paired with torsion bar suspension.
Handling and Control
As far as braking is concerned, its front wheels are paired with high performance disc brakes and the rear ones have conventional drum brakes. This braking combination is incorporated with an anti lock braking system along with electronic brake force distribution and brake assist system. At the same time, the car maker has also incorporated a highly responsive electric power assisted steering system, which reduces the efforts required by driver.
Additional features are a big plus, interior space and comfort is quite good.
Fuel efficiency needs to improve more, ground clearance is very low.
