Expert Review of Volkswagen Polo
Volkswagen India has finally launched the facelifted version of its hatchback, Polo in the car market. It is available in three trim levels namely Trendline, Comfortline and Highline in both petrol petrol and diesel engine options. The company has made major changes in the specifications. The diesel variants are now fitted with a 1.5-litre motor, which can displace 1498cc. It has the ability to churn out 88.8bhp along with 230Nm of peak torque output. Whereas the petrol versions are equipped with the same 1.2-litre engine, which can generate about 74bhp in combination with 110Nm of torque output. In terms of exteriors, it received a few modifications, which are a brand new radiator grille, a classy set of alloy wheels (only for Highline), a newly designed bumper and a redesigned headlight cluster, which gives the hatchback an appealing look. Its taillight cluster and rear bumper also have been re-designed and gives it a refreshing appearance. At the same time, the internal section of this newly launched vehicle is also refurbished. It comes with smooth dashboard, which is made of high quality scratch resistant plastic and equipped with a few features like AC vents, a large glove box and a new sporty steering wheel. The well cushioned seats are integrated with adjustable headrests and covered with premium fabric upholstery. Apart from these, it also has a number of safety features for a stress free driving experience. Some of the essential features, which are available in all trims are front airbags for driver and front co-passenger, emergency exit, high mounted stop lamp, rear fog lamps, 3-point seat belts for all passengers along with a lap belt for the rear seat center occupant, electronic engine immobilizer with floating code, galvanized body with 6-years warranty and internal rear view mirror with anti glare adjustment. In addition to these, the Comfortline and Highline variants are also bestowed with front fog lamps, anti pinch power windows, remote controlled central locking function, speed sensing auto door locks and anti lock braking system for preventing the vehicle from skidding. This hatchback will compete against the likes of Maruti Swift, Fiat Punto EVO, Hyundai Elite i20 and others in this segment. It is offered with a standard warranty of 2-years or unlimited Kilometers. At the same time, the customers can also avail an extended warranty of one years or 80000 Kilometers at an additional cost.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
The petrol engine is incorporated with a multi point fuel injection supply system, which allows the vehicle to deliver about 16.47 Kmpl on the highways. Whereas under standard driving conditions within the city, it can deliver about 14.12 Kmpl. On the other hand, the diesel engine comes with a common rail based direct injection fuel supply system and it helps in generating 16.02 Kmpl in the city and 20.14 Kmpl on the bigger roads, which is rather decent for this segment.
At present, this compact hatchback is available in several sparkling exterior paint options for the customers to pick from. The list includes a Copper Orange, Night Blue metallic finish, Carbon Steel, Candy White, Flash Red and a Reflex Silver with metallic finish.
Acceleration and Pick up
Both the petrol and diesel engines are mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box, which helps in delivering good performance. The 1.2-litre petrol engine allows the hatchback to achieve a maximum speed in the range of 145 to 150 Kmph. While, it can cross the speed barrier of 100 Kmph in about 13 to 15 seconds from a scratch. At the same time, the diesel variants take around 14 seconds for crossing the speed mark of 100 Kmph from a standstill and it can attain a top speed of approximately 165 Kmph, which is quite decent for this segment.
This 2014 version of this hatchback gets a lot of updates to its exteriors, which gives it an appealing look. The frontage has a bold radiator grille, which is fitted with a chrome strip. It is embossed with a prominent “VW” logo in the center. This grille is surrounded with a redesigned headlight cluster in black finish. The base variant is powered by halogen lamps, while other gets high intensity dual beam headlamps. The body colored bumper houses a wide air dam for cooling the engine. The Highline trim gets chrome application on its air dam and it is flanked by a pair of fog lamps with cornering light. The large windscreen is made of heat insulating glass and is integrated with a set of intermittent wipers, which has 4-speed variable speed setting function. The side profile is elegantly designed and dominated by strong character lines. Its door handles and external rear view mirrors are painted in body color. These ORVMs are electrically adjustable and integrated with side turn blinker. The flared up wheel arches are fitted with a set of steel or alloy wheels depending upon the variants. These rims are further covered with high performance tubeless radial tyres. The rear end is equipped with a body colored bumper, which has a pair of reflectors. The curvy boot lid is embossed with model lettering. Apart from these, it comes with a newly designed tail light cluster and a large windshield with a high mounted third brake light. Whereas, the windscreen of Comfortline and Highline trims has a defogger along with a wash and wipe function. Lastly, it also has a roof mounted antenna for better reception of FM radio.
The newly launched Volkswagen Polo is incorporated with a lot of advanced features for the convenience of the occupants. It has an efficient air conditioning unit with dust and pollen filter, while the top end variant gets climatronic automatic air conditioning system. The speed sensing power steering system comes with tilt and telescopic adjustment function that makes handling easier even in heavy traffic conditions. The illuminated instrument panel houses a digital tachometer, a speedometer, odometer, digital clock, fuel gauge, lane change indicator and an electronic trip meter for the comfort of the driver. The Trendline variants are equipped with radio preparation, which has roof antenna and partial pre-wiring. While other gets an advanced music system, which supports CD/MP3 player, USB/Aux-in port, SD card input and four speakers. The Highline trim comes with voice command technology along with Bluetooth connectivity and it also has a multi-functional steering wheel, which is integrated with audio and call control functions. The company has given this hatchback a number of utility based aspects including cup and bottle holders, front seat back pockets, a 12V power socket in center console, sunglass holder inside glove box, storage compartment in front doors, rear parcel tray, three grab handles along with coat hooks and single folding rear seat backrest. Apart from these, this model series is bestowed with some standard comfort features like height adjustable driver seat, gear shift indicator (for diesel engine), central locking, sun visors with vanity mirrors, all four power windows with driver side auto down function and electrically adjustable outside rear view mirrors. The top version also gets leather wrapped steering wheel, rear parking sensors, monochrome multi-functional display, which features traveling time, distance traveled, digital speed display, fuel efficiency and average speed.
This hatchback is designed with a large wheelbase of 2469mm that is increased by 13mm and ensures a spacious cabin inside. Its overall length measures 3971mm along with a decent height of 1469mm. The width is 1682mm that also includes external rear view mirrors. It comes with a minimum ground clearance of 165mm. The fuel tank capacity is 45 litres and it has a spacious boot compartment of 295 litres, which can be increased by folding rear seat.
This newly launched Volkswagen Polo series is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. Its diesel variants are powered by a new 1.5-litre turbocharged engine, which comes with a displacement capacity of 1498cc. It is integrated with four cylinders and sixteen valves using double overhead camshaft based valve configuration. This motor has the ability to churn out a maximum power of 88.8bhp at 4200rpm in combination with a commanding torque output of 230Nm between 1500 to 2500rpm. It is skilfully mated with a five speed manual transmission gear box. On the other hand, the petrol versions are equipped with a 1.2-litre MPI engine, which has the ability to displace 1198cc. It is integrated with 3-cylinders and 12-valves, which is also based on DOHC valve configuration. This petrol mill can generate 74bhp at 5400rpm along with a peak torque output of 110Nm at 3750rpm. This engine is coupled with the same five speed manual transmission gear box, which sends the engine power to the front front wheels.
The wheel arches of Trendline variants are fitted with a sturdy set of 14 inch steel wheels, which are covered with full wheel covers. These rims are equipped with 175/70 R14 sized tubeless radial tyres. Its Comfortline trims are fitted with a set of 15 inch steel wheels that are covered with 185/60 R15 sized radial tyres. The flared up wheel arches of Highline variants get a classy set of 15 inch alloy wheels, which enhances the look of its side profile. These rims are further covered with 185/60 R15 sized tubeless tyres. The company has also given a full size spare wheel, which is affixed in the boot compartment with all other tool required for changing a flat tyre and it is a standard features across all variants.
The company has used a McPherson strut type of mechanism for its front axle, which also has a stabilizer bar. While the rear axle is assembled with semi independent trailing arm type of suspension system, which keeps the vehicle well balanced at all times.
Handling and Control
This hatchback is blessed with a very responsive electronic power steering system, which is speed sensitive and makes handling convenient even in peak traffic conditions. This tilt and telescopic adjustable steering wheel supports a minimum turning radius of 4.97 meters. Its front wheels are fitted with a set of disc brakes, whereas the rear wheels are equipped with drum brakes. The Comfortline and Highline trims are equipped with an anti lock braking system, which prevents the vehicle from skidding.
Refined looking exteriors, good engine performance with decent acceleration and pick up.
Cost of maintenance and spares is expensive, ground clearance is quite less.
