Volkswagen Vento Description

The success of Polo was a clear sign for the German maker, Volkswagen, that it will roll out their new models in the car arena of India. Volkswagen Vento is one of the highline sedans, which is the entry level sedan in India. The customer's response is wide and clear as it is a car, which is preferred the most. It falls in the C+ segment. Currently, it has been sold in 6 petrol and 4 diesel variants. Its other petrol variants are Tredline, Comfortline, Style Limited Edition, Highline AT, TSI. It is loaded with a 1.2Litre petrol engine.

In terms of looks, this C+ segment car is placed in this segment as it feels up market and wider than others. However, its styling bits match with Polo but it has a good grip on its own identity. Its stance makes a powerful statement, and it is noticeable. It has smoked head lamps and the tail lights of the car are square in shape. The chrome strip on its trunk gives it a stylish look.

The interiors of the car too are very much inspired by Polo. The dual tone Beige and Black colour interiors have a different impact on the beholder. A premium look is given to it through Beige colour seats. Its interiors are very well fabricated with good quality livon and very much usage of chrome inside it. The sedan has chrome accent on the gear knob, steering wheel, handbrake liver. This 5 seater sedan has a boot space of 500 litres. The leg and head room at the front and rear is good enough. The comfort features like driver seat is height adjustable, power steering, all power windows with a function of one touch up and down. The air-conditioner works with automatic climate control with AC vents at the back. Other than these, the rear center arm rest and the front seat can be adjusted from the back.

The top speed of the car is 145kmph, and it can cover the distance of 0-100kmph in mere 11 seconds. Volkswagen Vento is powered by a 1.6Litre, In line petrol engine with a displacement of 103.6bhp at 5250rpm and a peak torque out put of 153Nm at 3800rpm. The DOHC engine is mated to a FW drive type five speed manual gearbox. In terms of mileage, this sedan offers 12 to 13kmpl in city conditions and on long and wider roads of a highway, it can go up to the mark of 14 to 16kmpl. Along with petrol, it is also available in diesel version.

Its suspensions comprise McPherson strut with stabiliser bar at the front and semi independent trailing arm at its rear. The braking system consists of disc brakes at the front and rear drum brakes.

All and all, this sedan is up for its top notch build quality and its ride quality. However, its base model, Tredline lacks many features and the price is high for this model. The special feature of the car is its looks, and it is available in shades like Shadow Blue, Reflex Silver, Deep Black, Terra Beige and Pepper Grey. Honda City, Hyundai Verna and Skoda Rapid are its major rivals.

Overall Review

"German Engineering, Best in Class” with this tagline, the Volkswagen Vento was launched in India. Classified as the elder sibling of Polo, this hot sedan was launched in the year 2010 and it quickly emerged as one of the best looking mid level sedans globally. It is based upon the polo platform and comes in three trim levels; Trendline, Highline and Comfortline. The Trendline is the most basic or the entry-level model. The Comfortline has additional features like CD-MP3 player, body coloured door mirrors and handles. And, the Highline variant comes in automatic gearbox with integrated music system, leather upholstery, and many other features. The automatic model has a transmission gearbox of 6 speed while the manual has 5 speed. The suspension system is not firm and makes the car feels very light. The name Vento means ‘Wind’ in Portuguese, and it does lives up to its name by providing higher speeds and swift acceleration.

Mileage and Fuel Economy

The Volkswagen Vento has a fuel tank of 55litres capacity. The petrol variant offers a fuel efficiency of 11.5kmpl in the city and about 16kmpl on the highways. The diesel engine is much more efficient than petrol, for it has 15.5kmpl and 20.5kmpl figures for the city and highways respectively.

Colors

The Volkswagen Vento comes in two different metallic and non-metallic shades. The metallic colors include Pepper Grey, Terra Beige, Shadow Blue and Reflex Silver, while the non-metallic colors include Candy White and Deep Black. The consumer also has the option of choosing different upholstery to match its outer body color.

Acceleration and Pick up

Volkswagen Vento can attain a top speed of 185kmph in manual transmission and 183kmph in automatic transmission. These figures are listed out in the company’s brochure.

Appearance

How can one create something that is more beautiful than it is already? Volkswagen engineers surely know how to do so. The first striking thing about Volkswagen Vento is its state of the art headlights. The indicator lamps are actually in them; not only it looks good, but keeps in mind everyone’s safety on the roads. The sleek and good-looking body coloured door handles, outside door mirrors look clean and stunning. The level of details is extraordinary. The side and rear windows have been installed with heat insulating glass. The exterior features come with full wheel covers, green wedge, galvanized body paint, halogen headlamps and many others.

Comfort Feature

In terms of comfort, the Volkswagen Vento is a home away from home. The superior “Livon” fabric upholstery gives immense pleasure and comfort to all the passengers. The legroom and shoulder room is very spacious and can accommodate up to five adults easily. The interiors are of high quality and scratch resistant. For the convenience, many small storage spaces are there such as coat hooks, ashtray, sunglass holder, power outlet and many more. All these basic features are available in all the three variants. The Trendline variant does not have any sort of speaker or music player setup while the Highline and Comfortline are equipped with 2 DIN RCD music system and 4 speaker setup. The central lock and boot lid are remotely operated, as is the opening of windows. The standout feature has to be the Multi Function display, which includes travelling time, distances traveled, average speed and other information.

Dimensions

When it comes to size, Volkswagen Vento has nearly the same exterior dimensions of the Polo line up, but a little stretched out. The overall length, width and height measures out to be 4384mm, 1699mm and 1466mm respectively. The wheelbase is about 2552mm and the minimum ground clearance is of 168mm.

For the Comfortline and Highline, the company decided to install 185/60 tyre type with 15inches radius. Both the Trendline and Comfortline have steel rims while the Highline has alloy rims. All the trim levels have a good minimum ground clearance of 168mm.

Suspension

Volkswagen Vento comprises of a great suspension system that will easily absorb any sort of bumps and shakes. In fact, it has been specially modified to suit the Indian roads and its geography. For the front suspension setup, MacPherson Strut with stabilizer bar is installed, and the rear suspension system comprises of Semi independent trailing arm.

Handling and Control

Volkswagen Vento has an excellent balancing and handling setup. The long curves and fast corners are easy to conquer and have good grip levels on both off road and on road. Even at the speeds of 140kmph, the driver feels like having full control over the car. Not only on highways but also in congested cities, it maneuvers easily and effortlessly.

Pros

Volkswagen has done a great job by combining the power, performance and comfort in a good ratio. It is a good sedan that has all the necessary features. Also, the availability in both petrol and diesel engines in each variant is always good.

Cons

The things start to go south while driving the Volkswagen Vento on highways, one don’t get the instant response from the gearbox, the car also tends to be quite sluggish in terms of acceleration. And, with just 47 thin dealership throughout India, after sales service is not that effective.
