Expert Review of Maruti Wagon R LXI BS IV
Maruti Suzuki India Limited is a subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki, the Japanese car maker. It has been in the Indian market since 1981 but the production started in the year 1983 with the hatchback named Maruti 800. This 800 model was among the most successful models launched by Maruti in the Indian market. This shows that Maruti, from the start, has maintained its firm grip over the hatchback segment in the country. Soon after the 800, a number of Maruti models were launched but the main success was with the hatchbacks. Maruti Alto is another success from the Maruti line-up, which, at present, is the best selling car of the Indian market. Another hatchback by the company is the Wagon R, introduced in the international market in the year 1993 and the first car to use tall wagon or tall body design. The car has undergone a number of changes in the past two decades and, at present, it is the fifth generation of the car that is running on the Indian roads. At present, it is available in the market with three fuel options - petrol, LPG and CNG, and soon we are going to see the diesel variant of this hatchback for sale as well.
Maruti Wagon R LXI is among the base variants of the car and is powered by a 1.0-litre, 12V, K series petrol engine, which generates a peak 67.1bhp at the rate of 6200rpm and a torque of 90Nm at 3500rpm. Mileage delivered by it is around 18kmpl and becomes another factor to attract the Indian buyers. Looks of this car are totally different from the other small cars present in the market. The tall look, with a small bonnet, make it stand apart from the others in the line-up. Rear section is also very flat with proper placement of tail lights and brake lights. Apart from the looks, safety of the passengers is also taken care of, with the safety features like Halogen headlamps, engine immobilizer, etc. The Blue Eyed Boy, that is the other name for the new Maruti Wagon R, is the personification of the modern premium compact hatchback with unmatched style, luxurious exteriors and versatile and spacious interiors. Maruti brings all this along with comfort, safety and reliability at an affordable price range.
Mileage and Fuel Economy
The petrol engine of the car delivers a mileage of 14.3kmpl on the city roads and 18.9kmpl on the highways. The fuel tank capacity of the car is 35 litres, which allows you to drive 650kms on a full tank. The engine complies with the BSIV emission norms instituted by the Government of India to keep a check over the pollution caused by the internal combustion units. Recent petrol hikes in the country have diverted the minds of Indian buyers from petrol cars to diesel cars, but with such a mileage, there is still a chance for this Wagon R model to stay in the market and continue its sale till the diesel variant is launched.
This hatchback is available in the market in seven amazing colours including Midnight Black, Superior White, Silky Silver, Bakers Chocolate, Glistening Red, Fire Brick Red and Breeze Blue.
Acceleration and Pick up
Acceleration of the car depends upon the amount of power and torque generated by the engine. With the power and torque of this K series petrol engine and the 5-speed manual transmission that comes mated to it, we can readily accelerate the car from 0 to 100kmph in a time interval of 15.9 seconds and can touch a top speed of 148kmph.
Looks of this hatchback are totally different from its competitors. This was the first time when Indians saw such a different concept, and sure they were attracted by it, and this could be easily proved if we see the sales figures of this Maruti car. When we see it from the front, it has a very slightly tilted front glass, apart from a small bonnet and big headlamps. From the side, this hatchback has a very tall look and one can easily tell how very spacious it is. The rear end of the car is also very straight, and to enhance the rear beauty, the company gives a chrome strip with Wagon R written on it, placed just above the license plate.
This hatchback offers a complete package of comfort and pleasure. The car is packed with many advanced comfort features that make your drive very relaxing. For the driver’s comfort, the ride gets a power steering wheel with tilted column, which allows him to change the height of the wheel according to his comfort. Plus, the electric ORVMs help them to adjust the mirrors without opening the window. Other than these, there are features like low fuel warning light, rear seat headrest, front cup holders, and power windows that open and close with a single touch of a button.
The exterior dimensions of this car are 3595mm x 1475mm x 1700mm (length x width x height), while its wheelbase is around 2400mm and the ground clearance falls close to 165mm. The front tread, which is the distance between the front left and the front right wheel, is 1295mm. Similarly, the rear tread is 1290mm. The kerb weight of the car is 870kg while its gross weight is 1350kg.
The heart of this tall hatchback is a K series petrol engine, providing a displacement of 998cc. This 3-cylinder engine has 4 valves per cylinder and an MPFI fuel supply system. This engine generates a top 67.1bhp at the rate of 6200rpm and a torque of 90Nm at the rate of 3500rpm. The engine is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission system, which further helps in improving the technology.
To provide a better drive on the road, the car is equipped with tubeless tyres of size 145/80 and wheels measuring 13 inch.
For suspension, the MSI provides McPherson Strut with Coil Spring in the front and Isolated Trailing Link with Coil Spring at the rear to facilitate a comfortable ride by avoiding any inconvenience caused due to the bumps, holes and unevenness on the road.
Handling and Control
