Over all Review of BlackBerry Q5

BlackBerry Q5 Price

Overall Review

It has been a long time since we have heard about anything else other than Android. It would be even more befitting to say that it has also been long, since we have heard the name BlackBerry. The company has not been that active in the media since the BlackBerry Z10. RIM was down in the doldrums since the launch of the Android software platform. They were in danger of being crashed out of the market but BlackBerry Z10 did pull things back to some extent. But for most the device was overpriced and low on battery along with a lot of other drawbacks. The company is trying to push the 10-series with better marketing strategy but for now, they have produced a more economical version with BlackBerry Q5. BlackBerry Q5 is 10.5mm thick and has a length of 120mm, and a height of 66mm. BlackBerry has not gone for substantial change in the design which again seems to be the weak point of the smartphone just like the Z10. The edges are bland which appears as a kind of theme as far as the device is concerned. The 120-gram weighing device has a 3.1-inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that has a high pixel density of 328ppi. So, since the screen size is comparative, the 328ppi certainly brings out the images with accurate colors and clarity.

The ever so reliable QWERTY keypad of the smartphone accompanies this, which means it eats into quite a bit of space of the device. However, the diehard BlackBerry users do not mind that and would give away anything to get that physically accessible QWERTY keypad as compared to the virtual one. As far as the applications like BBM and user interface are concerned, there is no problem whatsoever with a fast multitasking ability as well. But even after all these, the device fails to match up to the prowess of the Android gadgets. What is good about the device though is its 2GB RAM that would help the user in multi tasking better but the processor is dual core, which is thus half the capability of the quad core processor that most of the flagship Android devices feature these days. The operating system is BlackBerry 10, which is upgradable to the BlackBerry 10.1. Available in three colors of Black, White, and Red, BlackBerry Q5 has a 5megapixel camera located at the back of the device which is pretty good with LED flash facility for support while the secondary camera is as good as any, we have seen so far with 2megapixels strength. Videos can be shot at 1080 pixels, which pretty high too in terms of strength.

The battery strength is comprehensive with 2180mAh at least on paper but when it comes to delivery, BlackBerry Q5 just fails to deliver time and again. The storage capacity is pretty good with an 8GB internal capacity that comes with a microSD card slot of 32GB. Internet, just like most of the BlackBerry devices, is fast and easy to use. The Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spot enable the user to make other devices connect to the web through it. The device can also support the NFC technology depending upon the carrier. BlackBerry Q5 is good but not worth the price and there are certainly better Android devices that would be lot more fun and useful to use.

User Interface and UI functionality

The BlackBerry Q5 is a QWERTY keypad-featuring device, which means that a certain amount of space is bound to be reduced with its presence. So, when one considers the dimensions of 120mm by 66mm by 10.8mm, the device seems big, but the screen size is just 3.1inches which is not small but certainly not what you would expect with these dimensions. The display is great to look at though, with a phenomenal pixel density of 328ppi backing the IPS LCD capacitive touch screen. Therefore, the user can interact with the device through the physical QWERTY keypad and the touch screen facility. Resolution offered by the device is 720 by 720pixels while it has 16million colors for support.

Multimedia features

BlackBerry Q5 is nothing out of the usual in the entertainment department with a music player and a video player for music and videos. The device has a 3.5mm jack compatibility while loudspeakers and overall, quality wise, the device is as good as its predecessors.

Pictures and Video quality

BlackBerry Q5 uses the talents of the 5megapixel camera located at the back of the device that can capture images at a resolution of 2592 by 1944pixels. With auto focus and LED flash, the device proves that the camera is above novice standards. The secondary camera is beefy with 2megapixels that can be used for web chatting and video calling.

Internet support

BlackBerry Q5 comes with powerful Internet capabilities with the presence of the HTML5 browser along with Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Hot spot. Downloading is excessively quick and so is the surfing of web sites like Facebook and Twitter.

Internal and External Memory

BlackBerry Q5 has an internal memory of 8GB, which is more than adequate for starters to store a healthy amount of data. As and when the need arises, the user can augment the external memory of the device up to 32GB thereby, enhancing the memory collection up to 32GB. RAM is dominant too with 2GB that can accommodate faster access to resources.

Applications and Gaming

BlackBerry Q5 has lots of games that are available online and compatible with the device but they are just not nearly as good as, what the Android devices have to offer today. Still as far as entertainment is concerned, the purpose is served.

Battery Backup

BlackBerry Q5 is aided by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2180mAh but the power back up just does not serve the user with enough usage time that would be considered as ideal. The talk time offered is 12 and a half hours while the standby time is 14 days.

Connectivity Offered

BlackBerry Q5 comes with NFC technology that can enable a device to exchange data with other compatible devices within seconds just by the tap of the gadgets. There is also Wi-Fi hot spot that works perfectly fine too. The remaining connectivity features include Bluetooth, USB port, and GPRS.

Compare

BlackBerry Q5 when compared to BlackBerry Q10 has the same screen size with 3.1inches while the resolution and the pixel density are also identical. Q5 has an IPS LCD display whereas the Q10 has a super AMOLED screen. Battery strength is slightly more with Q5 but the talk time and standby time are slightly more with Q10. Also, Q10 has a better camera with 8megapixels as compared to the Q5's 5megapixel camera.

17 October 2013: Blackberry Q5, Q10 and Z10 have today received price slashes and a leaked OS update as well. Price slash is official, while the OS update, though available for downloading, is not official as yet. Costing Rs. 22,699 earlier, Q5 has been given a very minor price slash, it now costs Rs. 22,095. The OS has been updated to 10.2.1.641 which would bring improvements to the phone. With this updated version of os there are some changes been introduced like updated carrier bars, FM Radio, some added camera sensors, updated translations, hub fixes, APN setting fixes, NDK fixes, keyboard fixes and various AIR fixes. The handset was launched on 16 July 2013. The camera department is beefy with a 5-megapixel primary camera and a 2 megapixel secondary camera. Regarding the memory, we can say that there is an internal memory of 8GB which can be expandable up to 32 GB with an ease. BlackBerry Q5 is the latest RIM creation that is kind of a BlackBerry Q10’s toned down version to give it a more retro look. BlackBerry Q5 has a 3.1-inch display that can be interacted through the QWERTY keypad and the touch screen facility. The device runs on the 1.2GHz dual core coupled processor with a 2GB RAM and BlackBerry 10.2.1.641 operating system.

*       3.1-inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen display
*       BlackBerry 10.2.1.641 operating system
*       5megapixel camera + 2megapixel camera
*       Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hot spot + NFC
*       2180mAh standard lithium-ion battery
*       1.2GHz Dual core processor
*       2GB RAM

BlackBerry has vowed to come back to the forefront of the smartphone industry after their debacle followed the arrival of Android. Although the company has all the resources to do that, it would be difficult for them to compete with Android, which is a totally different deal altogether, for it is more commercial centric as compared to RIM, which is more for professionals. Though things did change a bit with BlackBerry Z10, but the results did not go the way they would have planned. For now, BlackBerry Q5 is more of a stripped down version of the BlackBerry Q10. The device has a 3.1-inch IPS LCD capacitive touch screen that gives 16million colors, and is driven by the resolution of 720 by 720pixels. The pixel density is brilliant with 328ppi, especially when one thinks about the small screen size. The user can interact with the device using the touch screen facility while Blackberry has also retained their trademark QWERTY keypad. BlackBerry Q5 has a length of 120mm, a height of 66mm and a width of 10.8mm and weighs120 grams. With 8GB internal memory, the user should not feel the need for more memory backup, at least for a while. There is always the microSD card slot for expanding the external memory of the device up to 32GB and thus, maintain data that may include songs, games, images and videos. RAM is of 2GB, which is more than a lot of the premium devices like HTC One X or one X plus offer.

This means the device would be racy but at the same time, the processor has been compromised with dual core and not quad core, for the dual core processor clocks at a speed of 1.2GHz. On the software front, BlackBerry 10 operating system is used which is further upgradable to the BlackBerry 10.1 operating system. The camera is segmented into two parts with a front and a back camera wherein, the former has a strength of 2-megapixel and the latter has a strength of 5-megapixel. The primary camera click images at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels and comes with facilities like LED flash and auto focus. Video recordings are also influenced heavily by 1080pixels strength. The device is available in three colors of Black, Red, and White, and comes powered by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2180mAh. However, the talk time and standby time produced are not that pleasing and continuous the trend of poor battery support for Blackberry devices. This becomes even more alarming when one has to use some high-end apps like Wi-Fi hot spot or other multimedia applications like music player and the video player. Data connectivity features apart from the ones mentioned above include Bluetooth, USB port, NFC, GPRS and EDGE.
