Expert Review of BlackBerry Z10 Black
The Canada based BlackBerry has added the smartphone named lackBerry Z10 to its arsenal – one that incorporates the latest operationg system BB10.2. The first thing that comes to mind about this phone is the fact that how different it is from the earlier BlackBerry devices. It seems that the company has let go of its traditional physical keyboard sporting curvy design in favor of a taller and more rectangular design, as characterized by Sony’s new Xperia and Apple iPhone 5 line of smartphones. This adorable gadget provides a dimension of 130mm x 65.6mm x 9mm and seeing that we can say that it is somewhat bulky as compared to iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy SIII. However, it weighs only 138 grams, which is pretty light compared to say, Nokia Lumia 920, which was heavily criticized for being overweight. To watch movies clearly, there is a 4.2-inch capacitive touchscreen, which is slightly bigger than that of iPhone 5 and comes with a WXGA HD resolution of 1280 x 768 pixels. Along with this, the pixel density of its display is 355ppi.
For a long time now, BlackBerry fans and critics have lamented the lack of a proper camera on BlackBerry phones. With BlackBerry Z10, the company seems to have answered their prayers as the device sports a 2MP camera at the front that is capable of recording 720p HD video and a cool rear camera of 8 megapixels that is capable of shooting at 1080p HD videos. Regarding the processor, we can say that a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor powers BlackBerry Z10, which along with 2GB of RAM, smoothen things along the way. Regarding its connectivity, we can say that the user will be spoilt for choice. Not only does Z10 offers LTE connectivity (a must for all high-end 2013 smartphones), but it also NFC (Near Field Communication)-enabled, a feature that Apple iPhone 5 lacks. With all these, it offers Bluetooth 4.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity too. To get a good battery backup, a removable Li-ion 1,800mAh battery that gives you a total standby time of 312 hours and a talktime of 10 hours backs the device.
User Interface and UI functionality
The main USP or we can say the advantage of BlackBerry Z10 is its update to the spanking new operating system, BB10.2. With this upgraded version, BlackBerry seems to have brought its OS at par with iOS 6 and Android Jelly Bean, by using a brand new UI and gesture navigation. To unlock the device, one just has to slide up from the bottom of the screen, which presents to you the homescreen of BB10 platform. These tiles give you a preview of all the apps that you have opened. Basically, this forms the multi-tasking interface in 10.2 version of operating system. The applications pre installed in this phone look very familiar. The homescreen in this stylish phone is occupied by an arrangement of 4 tiled widgets (a cross between Android widgets and Windows Phone 8 tiles, perhaps!). The 10.2 version of OS does away with all sorts of physical buttons and leaves the navigation only to gestures - this means, you do not have any physical or capacitive buttons anywhere in the UI. The lock screen looks simple with features like notifications for missed calls, new messages, time and date and a shortcut to the camera app in the corner.
The responsive touchscreen helps in gesture navigation and once you get the hang of it, you actually begin to enjoy it. The powerful processor in the gadget and the availability of 2GB RAM makes one's experience lag-free and stutter-free. One of the finest features in the device is BlackBerry Balance, which helps one to separate business from pleasure. It enables you to create separate sections for work-related apps that contain sensitive information, thus isolating them from other apps. However, there is one drawback in the UI, that is, the lack of a back button, which actually causes many problems when navigating within apps.
Before BlackBerry Z10, no one would have considered using BlackBerry as a multimedia device. However, with its 16GB internal storage, 4.2-inch HD display and a powerful 1.5GHz dual-core processor under the hood, this smartphone can handle almost any sort of media. In terms of entertainment, we can say that this handset is pretty plain-jane and gets the job done easily and on time. With this gadget, we can now consider that BlackBerry is able to launch multimedia devices also. You do get some basic audio controls but if you are looking for a more advanced setup, you will probably need to install a different app.
Similarly, while the video app is no great shakes, its interface is simple and the movies are watchable with decent viewing angles. Regarding the media quality, one cannot compare BlackBerry Z10 with Samsung Galaxy SIII and Apple iPhone 5.
Pictures and Video quality
To click sweet memories, there is a rear camera of 8 megapixels on BlackBerry Z10. With this handset, we can take close-ups, which seem to retain a lot of detail, although comes with a lot of noise too, so you need to adjust your shooting style accordingly. With this camera, one can do 1080p video recording and the video comes out great. However, one cannot compare this camera to strong rivals like Apple iPhone 5, which manages to include a lot more camera features with its 8MP shooter. Also, there is no way to stop the annoying clack sound with every snap.
The company claims that the net browsing experience on BB10 browser is really fast. When put to the test, the browser delivered splendidly that is, opening desktop sites in just 5 seconds, all on 3G itself. With all this, we can say that LTE support, Wi-Fi and browsing speeds have become even faster! The browser is featured with a black toolbar at the bottom, reminiscent of the Internet Explorer on the new Windows Phone 8 that features a similar set up.
The texts appear pretty crisp on the 4.2-inch HD display and the interface is responsive and fast. BlackBerry BB10 also supports the favorite application - Adobe Flash (not available on iPhone 5.) However, there is no offline mode in the browser, so you won’t be able to save pages for later. A great tool that forms a part of this smartphone is ‘Reader’ - it removes all ads and pictures from the current webpage, leaving you with only the text so that you can read in peace.
Internal and External Memory
In terms of memory, BlackBerry Z10 comes with an internal memory of 16GB, which is quite sufficient for the storage of media files like music, videos, ringtones etc. Along with this, there is an option to expand the external memory up to 64GB by using a microSD card. This puts Z10 at par with Apple iPhone 5 and Samsung Galaxy SIII in terms of memory capacity.
Applications and Gaming
In Blackberry smartphones, the newly christened BlackBerry World app platform for BB10 is yet to be launched. But, there are several developers who are working on creating apps that run on BB10 platform. There are alomst 70,000 apps that are claimed to be the opening number, and as of now, there is only a fraction of that number present in the BlackBerry World. But, these 70,000 applications do not include Skype and WhatsApp, so that is bad news for a lot of folks. We hope that BlackBerry World, when it launches, shows us quality, if not quantity.
BlackBerry Z10 is loaded with a narrow and tall removable Li-ion 1,800mAh battery, which comprises of a standby time of up to 312 hours and a talktime of up to 10 hours. As the battery of this handset is easily removable, one can always replace it with a spare fully charged battery, should you ever run out of the power.
Regarding the connectivity, we can say that BlackBerry Z10 is blessed with features like microUSB 2.0, Wi-Fi, EDGE, GPRS, Bluetooth 4.0, 3G, 4G as well as NFC (Near field Communication). With all these features, one can access the net and can do other things as well. Therefore, a wide variety of choices is there at your fingertips to choose from.
If we compare BlackBerry Z10 with Apple iPhone 5, we can say that regarding the specifications, both devices are more-or-less equal, the quality of the Apple product far out-runs that of BlackBerry Z10. If we talk of Apple's phone, we can say that in iPhone 5, the Retina display is far more superior to Z10 in terms of viewing angles as well as brightness and color variation. Though, BlackBerry Z10 holds its ground with its improved BBM, which is mindblowing with its internet features and removable battery, which rival that of iPhone 5.
The exterior of iPhone 5 looks more premium as compared to the exterior of Z10, which incidentally features plastic caps on both ends. Also, the media features offered by iPhone 5 including iPod and video player are far superior to the plain-jane media features of Z10. Regarding the display, we can say that the display in Z10 has higher pixel density as compared to iPhone 5. Lastly, we can say that Apple’s enormous iOS App Store is loaded with around 7,00,000 apps and games and thus, dwarfs the yet-to-be-launched BlackBerry World, which is struggling to open with only 70,000 apps.
BlackBerry Z10 Black Description
The dubious run for Blackberry is coming to an end or at least that is what we hope for with BlackBerry Z10 being the redemption device for the company. BlackBerry with BlackBerry Z10 is finally coming out of its QWERTY keypad roots as the device features a big 4.2 inch capacitive touch screen that works with a formidable pixel density of 355ppi, which is really as good as Apple iPhone 5, at least on paper. As far its processor is concerned the device is well backed up by the 2GB RAM and the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor that makes sure that the user can access the resources of the system at a fast pace. There is also a 16GB internal storage capacity that makes sure that the user can store loads of data without worrying about the memory space running out. In case the memory does run out there is always the option of expanding the memory up to 64GB with the help of a microSD card slot. The device is pretty snappy when it comes to the response time. The same can be said about the camera, which is pretty swift in its operations too. There is a rear camera of 8 megapixels that works at a resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels and offers loads of facilities including autofocus, LED flash, Geo-tagging, continuous auto-focus, image stabilization and face detection. The secondary camera of 2 megapixels has the video stabilization facility, which augers down well with web chatting and video calling. The device is NFC capable and has a swift Internet capability that makes sure that the user can download data including music files, games, images and videos. The user can also check mails or watch videos on YouTube as well. The bluetooth feature implies connection with other devices and hence data exchange and the same can be said with USB port but here the data exchange is through the USB cable. The user can also charge his or her device through the same process. The multimedia features include a music player and a video player which allows the user to listen to songs and watch videos. The music can be heard through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. But with all these high profile features, the battery strength of 1,800 mAh is really a huge disappointment as that would only be able to fetch a 7 to 8 hours of operating time.
