Expert Review of HTC Desire HD
HTC Desire HD is an Android smartphone by HTC that comes with a huge cinematic screen and high fidelity sound and is capable of giving the user a good browsing experience with Internet and one can open websites, play music, videos, games and run applications at their dynamic best speed and HTC Sense security helps the user to play everything on this device with safety. The 164 grams smartphone comes packed in a size of 123 mm x 68 mm x 11.8 mm and the unibody design of this smartphone makes the everything more subtle and manageable and the finish is fingerprint resistant and provides a great grip to the hands. HTC Desire HD is a glorious amalgamation of aluminium unibody and glass-front boundary and has four capacitive buttons, Home, Context menu, Back and Search, that sit directly below the screen and are capacitive in touch which provides seamless transition to the touchscreen, and also these buttons left no space for any accidental pressing, as in the case with other handsets. The top part of the phone is a house for the power button, the base constitutes a microUSB port and a 3.5mm headphone jack as well as an in-call mic, whereas the left side contains the volume rocker while the right remains a smooth empty surface. On the back of the smartphone is the space for camera, dual LED flash, loud speaker and centered chrome HTC logo. HTC Desire HD feels solid, utilizes interesting means of securing the battery and cards, and looks sweet as in the process. The screen is big, bright and beautiful and the handling is very comfortable. There is no physical keypad on the device but the phone comes with one of the best on-screen keyboard experience with which the user can carry on typing even with closed eyes, a good haptic feedback, amazing predictive text, comfortable, intuitive key spacing all make the texting experience great. The screen comes loaded with plenty of HTC widgets which are very functional and further helps in improving usability and the user can also arrange the widgets in alphabetical order to make the working with the screen more easy and comfortable. User Interface and UI functionality
With HTC Desire HD at the users' service, one can flip through the books and can easily look up tons of information about various topics as it has built-in library of classics. This amazing smartphone has 4.3 inches super LCD display which lits brightly and has capacitive touchscreen which is very crisp and the brightness options can be controlled through the menu or a home-screen widget with three set levels, low, medium and high. The display is made up of Corning Gorilla Glass which makes the screen scratch resistant and fingerprint resistant along with a display resolution of 480 x 800 pixels with color depth of 16M and a density of 217ppi pixels. This smartphone is running on the platform of Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread and is powered by 1 GHz Scorpion processor with Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon and the Adreno 205 GPU provides best graphics performance to the screen. The home-screen of this smartphone has HTC Sense UI that brings some enhanced multimedia abilities, giving users more options to create and share content (including new photo and video effects). It also includes location-based maps, which can be pre-loaded or cached and thus delivered without download delays or incurring mobile roaming charges. This phone also included is a new e-book store and a dedicated e-reader with annotation, search and translation abilities. The users can have access to a social networking hub, known as Friendstream which allows them to monitor their Facebook, Twitter, as well as other social networks all in one page. The new HTC Sense UI adds a new feature, Fastboot, which improves the startup time, from more than 40 seconds to less than 5 seconds. With HTC Sense, the user can personalize the homescreen and add icons without a long-press of the homescreen.
In terms of multimedia, HTC Desire HD is fully loaded with such features that make it a full entertainment device that can keep the users busy 24 x 7 with all the fun that it provides to them. With a good audio quality, the device comes with an in built loudspeakers along with 3.5 mm headphone jack which can also be used to connect the device with the other sound output sources, such as speakers and woofers, and the connectivity to FM radio with RDS allows the users to enjoy the flow of music falling from each corner of the room. This smartphone has a couple of technologies to boost the audio performance, Dolby Mobile and SRS enhancement and if one will plug in the headphones, they can change equalizer settings too and with these settings at hand, everyone should be able to find the sound they prefer. From the context menu, the users can share a song (over Bluetooth, email or message) and can look up the music video too and the sound recognition application, SoundHound, can easily recognizes a song from just a short sample or the users can say the name of the artist and song and SoundHound will find it for them, including lyrics. This super smartphone can play aural files which are supportable in .aac, .amr, .ogg, .m4a, .mid, .mp3, .wav and .wma (Windows Media Audio 9) audio formats and the users can also share videos, photos or music from their phone to their TV via DLNA support. The music files can be recorded on the .amr format. The video files on HTC Desire HD can be viewed as a grid or filmstrip and can be shared over MMS, email, or YouTube, Facebook and Flickr and the video player interface on the phone is quite basic. There is a full screen mode, where the clip gets stretched / cropped to fit the screen and one can even scrub through the video. Various formats that are supportable to playback the video files are .3gp, .3g2, .mp4, .wmv (Windows Media Video 9), .avi (MP4 ASP and MP3) and .xvid (MP4 ASP and MP3) but the videos can be recorded in .3gp format only.
Pictures and Video quality
HTC Desire HD comes with an 8MP, dual flash, auto focus camera with built-in effects which includes Distortion, Vignette Depth of Field, Vintage, Vintage Warm, Vintage Cold, Greyscale, Sepia, Negative, Solarize, Posterize and Aqua and face detection capability with Geo-tagging feature. The camera interface allows for touch to focus and there is an exposure bar which can be adjusted according to the necessity. This camera can capture full HD videos in size of 720p but there is no secondary camera to enable the users to have live video calling with family and friends.
HTC Desire HD allows its users to have Internet support through EDGE, GPRS, 3G, Wi-Fi Hotspot and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n via WLAN network and with HTML and Adobe Flash browser no websites are out-of-bounds and the user can also view the different pages in separate windows and a pinch and a tap lets you jump from one page to the next. Twitter, Facebook, Youtube, Gmail, Google Talk, etc. can be accessed on this smartphone.
Internal and External Memory
HTC Desire HD comes with an internal capacity of 1.5 GB with 768 MB of RAM and there is a microSD card slot which allows the users to expand the external memory up to 32 GB and along with the device, the user will get an 8 GB of card. This huge storage capacity is quite more than enough to allow the user to save enormous data in this device.
Applications and Gaming
HTC Desire HD is running on the Android platform so it provides access to more than 1,50,000 applications which keeps on increasing day-by-day and the user can get games of their choice from the Android market and form other sites also.
The battery of HTC Desire HD can keep the device working seamlessly up to 5 hours 30 minutes of talktime on 3G and 9 hours 15 minutes on 2G along with a standby time up to 420 hours on 3G and 490 hours on 2G. The standard Li-Ion 1,230 mAh battery resides behind the back cover of the device and is rechargeable in nature.
HTC Desire HD offers connectivity to 2G and 3G GSM networks only at a bandwidth of 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz and 900 / 2100 MHz respectively. The 3g connectivity provides up to 14.4 Mbps HSDPA download speed and up to 5.76 Mbps HSUPA upload speed and through GPRS one can have up to 114 kbps of downloading and through EDGE up to 560 kbps of downloading.
HTC Desire HD is a good handset with super slick UI, great browsing speed, Dolby Mobile and SRS virtual surround sound, decent e-book reader and very easy to connect contacts but has poor battery life, no OLED screen, has suspect build quality, the video player needs overhauling and bugs in HTCSense.com connectivity. Overall it has amazing features but the obsolete OS will make it face tough competition from Samsung Galaxy Y Pro, Samsung Galaxy Duos, Sony Xperia Sola, Sony Xperia P and lots more smartphone that falls under the same range.
