Over all Review of Huawei Ascend P6
Huawei has recently rolled out its much awaited and speculated Ascend P6 smartphone - The world's slimmest smartphone till date with thickness of just 6.18 millimeters much to the chagrin of the so-called claimers of "Thinnest and fittest" mobile manufacturers such as Apple 5 iPhone which is a fat one at the measured thickness of 7.6mm. In a similar vein, it beats most of its segment counterparts from other top-notch mobile competitors such as Samsung and Blackberry. It wears an astounding 8megapixel rear camera and a 5megapixel front facing camera, a gravid case for its segment that earns it a plus. Running on Google's Android 4.2.2 Jellybean operating system, Huawei Ascend P6 has a 4.7inches 720p screen (312 ppi HD support with in-cell display) that is powered by a Huawei's 1.5GHz quad-core processor redesigned with a K3V2 chipset, based on the ARM Cortex A9 architecture. Also, under the hood is 2GB of RAM support. In terms of data connectivity, it supports all standard data connectivity options along with 3G with the exception of 4G. It is a dual SIM smartphone with support for Wi-Fi, 3G, 2G / EDGE, Bluetooth v3.0 and USB connectivity features. Furthermore, it flaunts a NFC support and comes loaded with a 2000 mAh battery that fares well for the general user.
User Interface and UI functionality
The Huawei Ascend P6 is housed in a metallic body that comes with an aluminum back-plate and rollicked with a glass front support for full protection against scratches and dings. It is super-slimmed down with a thickness of just 6.18mm, a grand feat that is achieved due to Huawei's choice to present it with a LCD in-cell display, which in a way, merges the touch and display circuitry together, to save the build space thickness. The body is sliced slim with a squared off body that is designed with flat surface and pure metallic rim. It comes with a 'bumper' to save accidental grip losses.
Though it must be said that unlike iPhone or Blackberry, the Huawei does not have its own unique design language for its gadgets, yet the way technological edge and impossible beauty is combined into Ascend P6, it gives a positive pleasure. It has a 4.7-inch display, non-amusingly supporting a 720p model of display resolution, which pushes it further back against its competition products that offer better 1080p display resolutions. In terms of design, Huawei has made some unique decisions to roll the device with a slew of experimental options. The external power button and volume rocker are placed in a traditional square, placed high on the right side. They give you a so-called clichéd buttony feel with their metallic build up. One interesting feature is that no control bar is present beneath the screen, for Huawei has followed the lead of Google in this regard to provide virtual buttons in totality of its User Interface.
There is a 5-megapixel front-facing camera, which Huawei said is "perfect for selfies." On the back, the P6 features an 8-megapixel camera that also supports 1080p full HD video recording and playback. There are no rifts or bulges made to accommodate the camera either at the rear or at the front end. Nor are there any extra fancy curves that give it a clean look. With its strong feeling due to its metal-body, Ascend P6 looks very attractive with its finely crafted metal buttons all along the edges. The microUSB port is positioned on the top edge of the Ascend P6, which is unusual in itself. However, the truly bizarre element was the 3.5mm headphone jack, which is situated right at the bottom of the left hand edge. Its position will offer little inconvenience to its user with the earpiece popping out most of times.
The smartphone comes in Black, White, and Pink, with a matching color case. The choice of ‘Pink’ colour is a good move to roll out a flagship device in a color to accommodate the gender balance and the so-called feminist-view-holders. Besides that, the gender-neutral colors are always in the offing.
With Huawei Ascend P6, the China based manufacturer has claimed that it has designed one of the slimmest circuitry in the smartphone silicon industry to squeeze the electronics into the new handset. The device offers a multitude of multimedia features and facilities for the users to avail and enjoy themselves with even some proprietary innovative software built into it.
It has a 4.7-inch screen that is not a full HD, but offers a 720 x 1280mm display resolution. Over that, it is equipped with an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front camera that Huawei claims to be a good deal for 'selfies', a term Huawei used to euphemise the self-indulging youth segment who likes to click as much photos of them as the Milky Way can accommodate. The Ascend P6 features Huawei's innovative tile-based user interface called Emotion and proprietary software, including an "auto-facial enhancement" tool designed to make self-portraits look better. With Huawei's proprietary IMAGESmart software, the device turns even the most novice photographer into a professional one, with contrast and color enhancement, object tracing focus, auto scene recognition, and instant facial beauty support. Added to that, the Emotion UI brings a host of unique, optional visual themes that help to keep myriad of user-choices and tastes happy. There is no app tray, an intentional mischief so that all your apps live on the phone's homescreen, a feature in vogues, in other smartphones that is, ilk of iPhone. The Panoramic shooting options and facial recognition are available through soft-features and with Air Sharing, the device can be connected to other devices, to share documents or connect for gaming. The Smartphone camera's "instant facial beauty support" software reduces wrinkles and blends the skin tone. Huawei’s Emotion UI Android skin has seen a significant update with rollout of Ascend P6, with more than 300 improvements. It includes the new Me widget, which you can use to collect various elements in one place – app shortcuts, photo frames clocks and the like – and can be permutated as many times as you like. The clock, for instance, will switch to dual-clock mode when it detects you have just taken a new flight somewhere. With that general productivity, the device includes office features such as : SNS integration, Active noise cancellation with dedicated mic, DivX / XviD / MP4 / H.263 / H.264 / WMV player, MP3/eAAC+/WMA/WAV player, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Organizer, Document viewer, Photo viewer/editor, Voice memo/dial/commands, Predictive text input, and others.
Pictures and Video quality
Within the frame of Huawei Ascend P6, sits a reasonably sized touch screen that measures 4.7inches, 720p, and has 312ppi HD. The screen is vibrantly sharp and responsive with significant glare resistance, even at random angles. The colour rendering and reproduction is excellent, and the color temperature can be tweaked according to the user's whims and fancies within the settings menu, to warmer or cooler display settings. There is even a Magic Touch feature that enables you to use the phone with your gloves on, which earns it a plus, for it is a great thing to have when you live in a chilly country like the UK. Photographers are also appealed with its 8-megapixel rear-facing camera, though, is a far cry from the 13-megapixel offering on the Samsung Galaxy S4, but it’s coupled with an impressive 5-megapixel snapper on the front. Such an offering is rare on modern smartphones, and should prove to be particularly useful for video calls on Skype, Google Hangouts and other mobile messaging services. The 8-megapixel rear-facing camera is offered a F2.0 aperture and 4cm macro view, enabling 1080P full HD video recording.
The 720p display looks sharp and the HD video playback is swift and flair as much as it is a delight to the watcher. With a minimum focusing distance of 40mm, the rear 8 MP camera captures the details easily. Meanwhile, a new ‘image smart engine’ aims to simplify the image capturing process, a version of intelligent auto of consumer cameras, this feature automatically switches between modes such as night and macro photography without any user intervention.
However, most eye-catching feature is its front camera, boasting of a high resolution of five megapixels. This is clearly aimed at taking high-resolution self-portraits, and appropriately, there is an automatic face enhancement mode to go with it, which smoothens and softens skin blemishes.
Unlike the Huawei's P2, the P6 does not have any 4G capability. It is rolled out with support for 3G, which satiates the user's desire for high-speed downloads. The device also comes with connectivity features such as Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v3.0 and PC USB tethering. The NFC chip makes it easy for transactional processing for user comfort and convenience. All standard Java platforms are included. It has a host of built in applications such as Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Organizer, Document viewer, Photo viewer/editor, Voice memo/dial/commands, etc.
A standout feature is that it has GPS integration with the European GLONASS GPS constellation system via A-GPS system.
Internal and External Memory
Huawei Ascend P6 has an in-built 8GB of storage and a microSD card slot enabling the user to extend the memory up to 32GB. The memory pre-loaded is not very good considering the space an average photographed image will take with its high-resolution camera. It has a quad-core 1.5GHz processor of Huawei’s own manufacture and 2GB of RAM.
Applications and Gaming
There are loads of applications and gaming capabilities offered through Huawei’s Ascend P6 smartphone. The use of Emotion UI offers P6 users a different interface than seen on most Android smartphones, featuring a host of redesigned application icons and custom Huawei widgets.
With all amorphous features that are offered, the Ascend P6's Me widget lets you organize many apps and icons into its frame with Intel-sense that it offers. The widget is designed to use data stored on the phone to collate services and applications often used, and push them to the front of the UI. The P6 runs using Huawei's 1.5GHz quad core K3V2+ processor and boasts of a 2GB RAM. Huawei claims the processor is one of the fastest mobile chips ever made and, will offer users a very good internet speeds with 3G and 4G networks - something that will definitely delight smartphone gamers. The graphical rendering is fast, it can run pre-installed games applications, such as Fruit Ninja, hassle free and generally navigating menus smoothly.
Huawei Ascend P6 has a 2,000mAh unit, which is smaller than the Huawei P2’s 2,420-mAh battery. Huawei claims that the device will not be stalled in the middle of the day, and promised a battery performance that is, 30 percent better than batteries on similar smartphones. According to the company, its Automated Discontinuous Reception (ADRX) and Quick Power Control (QPC) battery optimization and power-saving technologies will significantly improve the phone’s performance by more than 30 percent, when compared to its counterparts and batteries of equal size.
Huawei Ascend P6 is offered with a 3G LTE data connectivity option. It is a dual SIM smartphone and GSM/UMTS/HSPA+ radios enhance the specifications of the phone over others. Other connectivity features supported are GPRS [Class 10 (4+1/3+2 slots), 32 - 48 kbps], EDGE network [Class 10, 236.8 kbps], 3G LTE [HSDPA 14.4 Mbps, HSUPA 5.76 Mbps], Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot and Bluetooth v3.0 with A2DP, LE.
Over that, the Near Field Communication or NFC chip is included for transactional operations. For PC data connectivity - microUSB v2.0 with USB On-the-go support is included.
Huawei is apparently in the race against high-end smartphone manufacturers like Apple, Samsung, and BB. The Huawei's Ascend P6 competes against Galaxy S4, the iPhone 5 and Xperia Z or the HTC One. However, being the world's thinnest smartphone with just 6.2mm thickness gives it a vast foothold. It is certainly a good 1.4mm thinner than the iPhone 5, and a great 3.1mm slimmer than the HTC One, which is the closest Android phone to it. Though the 4G LTE version is not yet available, it will definitely hurt its prospects in terms of sale.
