Over all Review of Intex Cloud X4
Diversifying from its core business of computer peripherals, Intex has jumped into the bandwagon of mobile phones with the launch of a series of budget-oriented smartphones targeting the South Asian markets, especially India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh. Along with launching Intex Cloud Y2, Intex also launched a new variant of its cloud series of smartphone - Intex Cloud X4. Intex has launched the cloud series with a 'tinge', a strategic displacement from its core business solutions to diversify its cloud services segment and hardware manufacturing chain operations. Intex Cloud X4 is a dual-SIM (GSM + WCDMA) smartphone that sports a 3.5-inch WVGA multi touch supporting capacitive touchscreen and offers a maximum display resolution of 320 x 480 pixels. Under the hood, Intex Cloud X4 is equipped with a powerful 1GHz dual-core processor and backed by 256MB of RAM. Intex Cloud X4 has 512MB of internal storage capacity. The phone’s external storage space can be expanded up to 32GB using its microSD card slot. Running on Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, Intex Cloud X4 has no new tricks of trade offered in terms of enhanced UI functionality or any other enhancements in that regard.
In the optical department, Intex Cloud X4 is equipped with a 3.2MP rear camera and a front facing VGA camera. The photos clicked are not the best under the sun, but its budget pricing justifies the decision taken for embedded camera equipment. On the connectivity front, Intex Cloud X4 offers all major connectivity features including support for 3G (HSUPA 7.5Mbps : 5.5Mbps). Besides that, it also supports 2G, GPRS/ EDGE along with WAP network data connectivity, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth (v4.0 with A2DP) wireless data network connectivity, and microUSB version 2.0 for PC data connectivity. It also supports FM Radio (with recording and auto-tune functionality). Intex Cloud X4 is shipped with many pre-loaded apps, which include many proprietary apps such as Intex Play, Intex Life Box, Intex zone, Intex movies, and other apps such as YouTube, Facebook, Skype, and Hungama. Besides that, a customized native language application – Matrabhasha, is also included for meeting the regional and local language preferences of South Asian consumers. It is powered by a 1,500mAh lithium-ion battery that delivers up to 7 hours of talk time or 300 hours of standby time.
User Interface and UI functionality
With the rise in numbers of quality smartphones from various vendors, the computer peripherals and accessories maker Intex has decided to cock a snook at its competitors by putting out a strategy to capture popular markets such as the South Asian consumer segment. Running on Google's Android 4.2 Jelly Bean operating system, the User Interface of Intex Cloud X4 offers nothing strikingly new, except for some fancy indigenous applications that come pre-loaded into the phone. The build and design language is the usual standard rectangular flat cut form factor with rounded corners and thing metallic gloss finish. The usual controls such as volume rocker are on the right side, beneath the power button, and a 3.5mm audio jack finds it place at the top aside a microUSB port. The build quality is relatively cheap and the grip is slippery. There is a camera "eye" striking out to accommodate the bulky hardware of its 3.2MP rear camera device, which makes it prone to scratches and dust.
Intex’s Cloud new range of 3G equipped smartphones are primarily meant to allow budget class users to avail themselves of a good quality smartphone along with the advantage of blazing speed operation. It is mainly targeted at those entry-level smartphone users who are looking for high-performance, low budget, pocket-friendly mobile devices. Intex Cloud X4 flaunts a host of multimedia features. The device sports a 3.2MP rear camera, supported by flash for good quality, light controlled picture shooting. Disappointingly, there is no option of any proprietary application to support photo shooting - a feature offered by major manufacturers like Samsung or Apple. Though users can download apps like Instagram or SmartPhoto App to enhance their photo-shooting experience. The front facing VGA camera allows but is not strikingly good in offering video-conferencing or video call services or even for shooting self-portraits. The video quality is not great and Intex Cloud X4 does not support high quality HD video playback. Demanding apps and games too are not swift in their execution time.
The device is loaded with many applications including a customizable native language app called Matrabhasha that is featured exclusively to cater to the needs of South Asian markets that enable users to use their smartphones in many of the supported Indian languages (including their major dialects). Matrabhasha is fully integrated in the overall Android framework including Android Browser, Messaging, SMS, E-Mail, etc. So all the major multimedia features are designed to be compatible with Matrabhasha support.Intex Cloud X4 supports major audio formats such as MP3, WAV, WMA, and eAAC+. For video playback also, it supports many features including MP4, WMV, MPEG, among others. There is also support for FM player with multi-station select, and auto-tune capacity along with streaming FM recording option. Java enabled browsing and flash plug-in browsers are supported by this device.
Pictures and Video quality
Intex Cloud X4 is sported with a 3.2MP rear camera that allows users to take quality images even under challenging light conditions as it is supported by a flash and auto-focus soft touch facility. The camera does not support HDR mode or HD video recording. The video playback is unimpressive and problems of constant slow down and catch up cycles tend to test the patience of users. The rear 0.3MP VGA camera is just okay to have a video chat or a Skype conversation and nothing more than that. The images capture via its front camera are particularly grainy and pixilated, no doubt that surprises were unexpected anyways in this segment, as price of Intex Cloud X4 demands justification vis-a-vis features offered. It must be added though that the video formats supported natively can be enhanced by installing 3rd party codecs.
Intex Cloud X4 dual-SIM (GSM + WCDMA) smartphone comes with 3G network capability (HSUPA 7.5Mbps: 5.5Mbps). It also has back compatibility and support for slower networks - 2G, GPRS/ EDGE along with WAP network data connectivity. Java support and internet browsers are pre-loaded in it.
Internal and External Memory
Intex Cloud X4 is powered by 1GHz dual-core processor and has 256 MB of RAM. Such hardware does not augur well for a demanding operating system like Android Jelly Bean. Moreover, it comes with a small but significant 512MB of internal storage (150MB available). The external storage can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card.
Applications and Gaming
In terms of gaming over Intex Cloud X4, games like Fruit Ninja and Angry Birds offer an enjoying experience to the users. With its 1GHz processor, games can be played without any hassle. However, its low RAM and ROM availability make games like Real Racing 3, a hangman game. Video streaming over internet is easy but HD video playback is not much swift. There is an Indian native language app pre-loaded called Matrabhasha, which is fully integrated across the Android platform in the phone and is featured exclusively to cater to the needs of South Asian markets as it includes all major South Asian languages and their major spoken dialects.
There are also other applications like Intex Life Box- a mobile lifestyle portal that brings all popular and useful services to one option clearance; Intex zone - provides easy access to the Intex website on all available updates and major product details, and Intex Play- which allows users to download many popular applications and games.
Intex Cloud X4 is power packed with a 1500mAh battery that can last for 7 hours of talk-time and can provide a lasting standby time of 5 days. (approx. 300 hours).
Intex Cloud X4 has many data connectivity features to offer which include 3G (HSUPA 7.5Mbps : 5.5Mbps), 2G, GPRS/EDGE network data connectivity, WAP Mobile network connectivity and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n (along with Wi-Fi Hotspot connectivity feature), Bluetooth v4.0 with EDR and A2DP, and A-GPS geo aided navigation (over GLONASS). Besides that, microUSB v2.0 is included for PC data connectivity.
Intex Cloud X4 is set to compete against alternative budget based Android smartphones like LG Optima, Samsung Mini, and Nokia Asha in its price segment. Though what appears as a battle lost, Intex still has a good consumer base in the computer segment, which can be channelized for popularizing its mobile handsets. Rivals like Lava Xolo Q800 and Q600 level Intex Cloud X4 down as they offer far better cameras and larger screen size along with greater processor speeds and higher RAMs for a little more price. Nokia Asha carries a better branding and a larger consumer base and by an extension, greater reliability and support. Samsung Mini and Galaxy S Duos are priced higher but are veritable competitors in low to mid range consumer segments that Intex Cloud X4 will have to face. Intex Mobiles is a new player in the market and its support centers are few, if not rare. Experiments with enhanced usability like - Matrabhasha have greatly increased its prospects of succeeding in South Asian markets, yet snatching a consumer segment from larger players like Xolo, Karbonn and Samsung without proper publicity is a big challenge for Intex.
