Expert Review of Lava Iris 402 Plus
With the beginning of the new season, all smartphone manufacturing firms have geared up to prepare their new line of smartphones. The Indian smartphone manufacturing firms would probably stick to their previous strategy of luring the user through low or economical prices and giving high-end specifications. Lava is also one of those smartphones brand that would probably apply the same principle especially for its mid carter segment of devices. Last season has been a mixed bag for Lava as the company had done well at certain points of time in terms of sales but overall, has still not been able to move up in the overall position with respect to Karbonn and Micromax. But, it would be hoping that things would change this season, for it is out with Lava Iris 402 Plus, which sports a 4 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen that runs on a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels along with 16 million color resolution.
The gadget has a length of 125.5mm, breadth of 64.5mm and thickness of 11.4mm. The bar handset weighs 124 grams and is available in the colors of Metallic Brown, Metallic Grey and Metallic White. A 1500mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers the smartphone and churns out a standby time of up to 200 hours and a talk time of up to 4 hours. Since there is dual SIM support, the user can make or receive calls with two numbers. The frequency supported for the two SIMs include 900, 1800 and 2100MHz. The presence of 1.3GHz dual core processor gives the necessary boost to the gadget for running activities like games and web access without much hindrance. RAM is of 512MB, which is midway between what one would call formidable and low. However, there is no confusion as to whether the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system is formidable, for the user gets access to tons of new games and applications.
The front camera of the device is VGA, which means 0.3 megapixels, that is not much but for video calling over Wi-Fi, the user should find it adequate. The pixel strength is better with the primary camera with 3 megapixels to be precise that offers a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels along with the facility of LED flash. Videos are not too bad either when it comes to the results produced. Internet is reasonably quick with the device supporting 3G technology with Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and HTML browser as the means to download data and visit websites. The tethering feature remains absent from the gadget but features like USB port and Bluetooth are readily available for exchanging data with other gadgets.
Finally, the music and video player constitute the entertainment section of the gadget. Also, FM Radio too adds value by providing access to the desired local radio stations. The user can keep data related to songs, games, movies and images with 1.25GB of internal space already given in the device. The 32GB microSD card slot should act as a cushion for those who want to expand their storage horizons to keep voluminous data.
User Interface and UI functionality
A 4 inches TFT capacitive touchscreen makes for a decent display size offering a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels and an average pixel density. Lava Iris 402 Plus has some reflection problem from the sides but overall, provides a decent performance by its display.
The sound quality of the music player is not the best and nor is the music player interface the most attractive. Still, Lava Iris 402 Plus has compatibility with various formats not only for the music player but also for the video player that lets the user watch movies. FM radio works according to the radio stations provided by the city in which the gadget is used.
Pictures and Video quality
The 3 megapixels primary camera takes care of image capturing with a resolution of 2048 by 1536 pixels. Digital zoom and LED flash ensure that better accuracy and clarity is provided should the desired object is far or the background is not bright enough. The secondary camera is a little meagre when it comes to the pixel strength of 0.3 megapixels. Though, the user can use the front shutter for online video calling.
There is no Wi-Fi hot spot or DLNA with Lava Iris 402 Plus but fundamental features like Wi-Fi, GPRS, EDGE and HTML browser allow the user to connect with websites like Facebook and Twitter or download data with minimum hindrance.
Internal and External Memory
Like many other smartphones, a certain amount of the prescribed internal memory is curtailed for the use of application installation and with Lava Iris 402 Plus too, the user gets only 1.25GB out of the total 4GB of memory space. For more space, the user gets a 32GB microSD card slot that solves the problem of a larger data collection. RAM of 512MB is just about right with which the user gets to play games and execute activities without any sluggishness.
Applications and Gaming
Lava Iris 402 Plus lets the user enjoy loads of games and applications with the support of Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system. Google play store can be used to download games like Temple Run, Virtual Tennis, Real Race car etc., among many others.
Lava Iris 402 Plus is driven by a 1500mAh standrd lithium-ion battery that is good enough to make the device last for up to 200 hours, which can mean the standby time as well. The talk time of up to 4 hours is just about manageable.
Lava Iris 402 Plus comes with Bluetooth for wireless data transaction whereas the USB port works with USB cable to charge the device or transfer and receive data with other compatible gadgets. Wi-Fi, GPRS and EDGE fulfills the internet connectivity portion of the gadget. This 3G compatible smartphone works with frequencies of 900, 1800 and 2100MHz respectively.
Lava Iris 402 Plus when compared to Karbonn A9 Plus comes with the same screen size of 4 inches and both the gadgets offer dual core 1.2GHz processors. The operating system is superior with Lava Iris 402 Plus as it runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2 software platform whereas Karbonn A9 Plus runs on Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system. Lava Iris 402 Plus is ahead of Karbonn A9 Plus in the battery department too, with 1500mAh standard lithium-ion battery for the former and 1420mAh standard lithium-ion battery for the latter.
The primary camera of Karbonn A9 Plus sports 5 megapixels, which is better than the 3 megapixels offered by Lava Iris 402 Plus. Similarly, the VGA secondary camera for Lava Iris 402 Plus falls short of the 1.3 megapixels offered by Karbonn A9 Plus. The figures for RAM, internal memory and microSD card slot potential are the same for both devices. Karbonn A9 Plus also offers Wi-Fi tethering that is absent in Lava Iris 402 Plus.
