Expert Review of Lava Iris 503 White
Lava jumps into the game too with their new line of smartphones making this season one of the most explosive smartphone fest that we have witnessed till date. The Indian smartphone manufacturing firm has done well but has not been able to grab the top spot among its tier2 mates. With Xolo line of smartphone they have further shown the vigor to expand further but there is some way to go before they can be considered as a reliable and top brand. Lava Iris 503 for the time being is the smartphone we have on our hand that features a 5 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen. The device is the flagship gadget for the firm and is compatible with the dual SIM facility. Going back to the display the resolution offered by the gadget is 960 by 540 pixels. The qHD display has 16 million colors too giving better color accuracy. The dimensions of the smartphone include 143.2mm, a breadth of 73.3mm and a thickness of 10.45mm. When we look under the hood for the hardware of the device we are a little disappointed because a 512MB RAM and a 1.2GHz dual core processor does not exactly scream flagship model. A quad core and a GB RAM would have been ideal but in any case the Android Jelly Bean 4.2 operating system does not disappoint us and opens door to plenty of games and applications. Internal memory is although 4GB on paper but only 2.54GB can be used by the user for his or her personal purpose. The remaining 1.27GB would be consumed for applications installations. The external memory can be expanded up to 32GB with the help of the microSD card slot. The primary camera of 5 megapixels is loaded with a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels while the 1.2 megapixels secondary camera runs on a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. LED flash and auto focus are useful features that may help the user in difficult circumstances for photography. GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, HTML5 browser are all methods and tools to access the web whereas the USB port and Bluetooth comprise of the data connectivity options offered the smartphone. Music player and video player along with FM radio have never disappointed when it comes entertainment with regards to songs and movies. The 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery gives a talk time of up to 7 hours which is not bad at all. Other applications and features of the smartphone include the data backup facility, sound recorder, preloaded apps, FOTA etc.
User Interface and UI functionality
The size of the display offered by Lava Iris 503 is impressive indeed with 5 inch TFT capacitive but the resolution and pixel density are not great. At 960 by 540 pixels and 16 million colors, the qHD display gives decent images with minimum reflections.
The video player of Lava Iris 503 works well with various formats and makes sure that desired movies can be enjoyed. Music player and FM radio look after the musical experience of the device with support for the 3.5mm jack for connecting an earphone with the gadget.
Pictures and Video quality
The camera department does not seem all that strong as much as it looks sober. The 5 megapixels primary camera does alright with a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels while the secondary camera of 1.2 megapixels looks good for its caliber at a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. The user gets the zoom facility which can be close in on desired objects up to 8X. LED flash and auto focus are given too.
There are a few glitches with the web facilities of the device when it comes to surfing heavy buffering web sites like Facebook and YouTube. Downloading speed also varies according to the size of the data. The data that can be downloaded includes songs, games, images and videos.
Internal and External Memory
Lava Iris 503 relies on the 4GB internal memory for keeping a manageable amount of songs, games, images and videos. To be precise 1.27GB of the given 4GB memory is taken up to application installation while the remaining 2.54GB is usable. If the memory seems short the user can go after the microSD card slot for a 32GB expansion. RAM is also mediocre with just 512MB that may hamper overall speed of the device.
Applications and Gaming
Lava Iris 503 features some preinstalled applications including the facility of data backup via Android. There is a sound recorder application along with a power saving application. Games like Fruit Ninja and commando can be downloaded from the Android App store.
A 7 hour talk time can be obtained from the 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery that powers the Lava Iris 503. The standby time is not been mentioned or notified by the company but a healthy amount is expected while the multimedia usage time is pretty decent as well.
Lava Iris 503 works with USB port and Bluetooth when it comes to exchanging data with other gadgets. Bluetooth works wirelessly whereas the USB port requires a USB port. The latter however can also charge the smartphone via the same process. The GSM SIM's of the samrtphone function at 900 and 1800MHz.
Lava Iris 503 when compared to Micromax Canvas Turbo A250 has an identical screen size of 5 inches each but the resolution and the pixel density is much higher with the latter. Lava Iris 503 has a Dual core processor while the Micromax Canvas Turbo A250 comes with a quad core processor. Lava Iris 503 has a 512MB RAM which falls short by quite a margin as compared to the 2GB RAM offered by Micromax Canvas Turbo A250. Lava Iris 503 has a 5 megapixel primary camera which is again weaker as compared to the 13 megapixels primary camera of Micromax Canvas Turbo A250. Secondary camera is 1.2 megapixels with Lava Iris 503 while the same is 5 megapixels with the Micromax Canvas Turbo A250. The Android version is same for Jelly Bean while both the gadgets are dual SIM as well. Both the smartphones have a 2000mAh standard lithium-ion battery.
