Expert Review of Micromax A101
The smartphone game has evolved so much over the last few years with super fast processor, powerful cameras and huge screens. The rise of phablet has changed the basic parameters for what one could call as officially big. Micromax has been one of the many companies that have tried to cash in on the phablet market and also on the android market by offering cheaper versions of the same. Although a lot of companies now have followed the same strategy, it was Micromax that started the trend and successfully so. Therefore we have devices like Micromax Canvas and Micromax A101. We will take into account the Micromax A101 here that has a huge 5 inch screen backed by a rather moderate pixel density of 187ppi. The device is pretty heavy with 200 grams which is unusual as there are bigger devices than this that weigh lower. The Micromax A101 has a length of 148mm, a breadth of 79mm and a height of 10.3mm. Before we move on the heavier specs of the device, we’ll at some of themore utility features including the dual SIM facility. The user can use the same and enclose two SIM’s at the same time, both in active states. For a phablet it is a nice feature to have especially when we know that such features are available mostly in low scale gadgets. The internal memory of the device is 4GB although only 2GB of it is usable, which is still a good amount in itself. External memory can be augmented too with the microSD card slot intact. The total capacity of the card slot is 32GB. The RAM is 512MB which is not exactly outstanding and does curtail the high functional speed potential of the device that the 1GHz dual core processor has to offer. The operating system is Android Ice cream sandwich that should provide the means for the user to get his or her hands on the latest apps and games. Since the device is not compatible with the Android Jelly Bean, the user is bound to miss out on a lot of other apps and games. The 5 megapixel camera has a few glitches when it comes to response time after pressing the button. The images produced outdoors are better but indoors not so much. Video recordings are good too. Secondary camera is a great addition providing access to the web calling system. Internet looks cushioned with Wi-Fi hot spot and dual band. The net speed is impressive and unexpectedly so, with swift access to web sites like Facebook and Twitter. Downloading of data is also allowed but the speed does take a hit. Available in the basic colors of black and white, Micromax A101 is boosted by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2100mAh which is pretty big. The standby time reciprocates with up to 207 hours but the talk time is a little behind of what was expected with up to 6 hours. Entertainment is not much of a problem with a music player and a FM radio while the video player is always fun to use on a 5 inch display for watching videos.
User Interface and UI functionality
Micromax A101 has a massive 5 inch display that runs on a pixel density of 187ppi along with a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels. The screen is looked after by the 16 million colors thus making the TFT capacitive touchscreen a sweet device to swipe your fingers on. The response time is nice and quick. It is only while using the web that some lags are experienced but nothing much to worry about.
Micromax A101 offers a video player and watching videos on this huge 5 inch screen is an absolute joy. The music player works fine as well with compatibility with the formats MP3, AAC, WMA and WAV player. The video player is supported by the formats MP4, WMV, H.264 and H.263 player. With the 3.5mm jack compatibility, the music can be heard through the earphones or through the loudspeakers. Fm radio also has the FM radio recording facility that can record songs as and when required.
Pictures and Video quality
Micromax A101 uses the 5 megapixel camera to capture images at a resolution of 2592 by 1944 pixels. The image quality is staggering in bright light or rather natural light but indoors the shutter struggles. Video recording has no negatives to point out except the results could have been better when the zoom facility was used. An LED flash is also provided which is of great use while geo-tagging can be used for tagging one’s friends and family members. Secondary camera is not high on strength with VGA quality but is of great use to get some face time with family members or friends online.
Micromax A101 uses the Wi-Fi for connecting with outside connections while Wi-Fi hotspot lets the user connect other devices to the web through it. Here the Wi-Fi tethering makes the smartphone as a web server for other devices. Apart from that there is always the default browser and the GPRS.
Internal and External Memory
Micromax A101 provides the 4GB internal memory although only 2GB is effective. The user can keep a bulk of data together while the microSD card slot makes up for an excellent back up measure. In case the user runs out of memory, he or she can accentuate the external memory of the device up to 32GB. RAM is an average 512MB that should really have been at least 1GB. So the speed of the device would be that much slower.
Applications and Gaming
Micromax A101 provides tons of games and apps. Playing virtual racing games is awesome with the 5 inch screen giving better control over the virtual characters. With Android Ice cream sandwich as the software platform, loads of games are well within the user’s reach.
Micromax A101 is advanced by the standard lithium-ion battery of 2100mAh that lets the user get a talk time of up to 6 hours apart from the standby time of up to 207 hours.
Micromax A101 uses the USB port, Bluetooth, GPRS and EDGE for various data connectivity options. Wi-Fi is probably the strongest suit for the gadget as far as connectivity options are concerned. Wi-Fi hot spot and dual band are fantastic for accessing web on a large scale for multiple devices.
Micromax A101 when compared to Karbonn A21 has a bigger screen with the former featuring a 5 inch display and the latter 4.5 inches. Karbonn A21 though has a faster response time, which can be attributed to the faster processor, provided by it. Micromax A101 has the FM radio facility, which the Karbonn A21 does not, but the latter has a better storage capacity. Micromax A101 has a stronger battery and thus provides a slightly longer talk time and standby time.
