Overall Review

A company always tries to cater to the maximum section of its target audience. But devices of a single type cannot achieve the same so it is important to understand about the features and attributes that fulfill the needs and desires of various sections of the society. Micromax has released a lot of high-end smartphones in recent times but there are those who would prefer a much more economical version of them even if they come with some curtailment in terms of specs. Therefore, we have the Micromax Bolt A40 that comes with a 4.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, triggered by a resolution of 480 by 854 pixels along with 16 million colors. The processor chosen for the smartphone is the spreadtrum SC6820 that runs at 1GHz and although it is being tagged as lightening to denote its quickness, the device is not that agile. RAM of 512MB is average and therefore, supports different games and applications. Android Jelly Bean is the latest software platform from Google and behind it is the Android Ice Cream Sandwich. Though we understand the need for curtailment with lesser price, Micromax has chosen Android Gingerbread as the OS for this device, which is pretty far behind and would be a big turn off for a lot of potential users. Internal memory is really small with 75MB that is, if one goes by the standards of a smartphone but the microSD card slot would solve the problem with a 32GB external memory expansion threshold. A 2-megapixel primary camera is given at the backside of the smartphone whereas the VGA secondary camera is available at the front. An LED flash is also given at the back alongside primary camera to assists in darker background. Bluetooth and USB port comprise of the data connectivity features of the gadget while GPRS and EDGE deliver internet connectivity. Another way to access the web is through Wi-Fi that enables the user to catch external internet connections for his or her own use. Music player and video player are parts of the multimedia applications that also include FM radio delivering access to songs and videos. Few games also come pre-installed in the gadget, which should keep the user entertained and engaged. A standard lithium-ion battery of 1500mAh is pretty much a suitable power backup that provides a talk time of up to 4.5 hours and a standby time of up to 175 hours. Other features that are also pre-installed in the gadget include MiMicromax, EYE Room, Connect the dots, Eye-room, hike, opera mini and M!live.

User Interface and UI functionality

Micromax Bolt A40 features a 4.5-inch TFT capacitive touchscreen, which is a good size and very convenient for those who love to watch movies and play games. The resolution is also pretty decent with 480 by 854 pixels along with 16 million colors. Micromax Bolt A40 finds it hard to deal with the hardcore use especially when multitasking that causes a slight sluggishness in response time.

Multimedia features

Micromax Bolt A40 has an FM radio and a music player, which are the primary sources for access to the latest and popular music that the entertainment world has to offer. Various formats can be used to listen to music on the music player including MP3, AAC, MID, IMV, and WAV. The video player allows the user to watch and enjoy videos of his or her own choice in MP4 and 3GP players.

Pictures and Video quality

Micromax Bolt A40 comes with a 2-megapixel primary camera that produces a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels. Image quality is all right outdoors and indoors but the user should not have expectations beyond what the pixel strength allows the camera to do. Secondary camera for video calling and web chat works with VGA quality at a resolution of 640 by 480 pixels. LED flash and auto focus along with digital zoom features are welcome additions that are bound to make things simpler for the user.

Internet support

Micromax Bolt A40 has a reasonable internet backup with Wi-Fi as means to utilize outside wireless internet connections. GPRS and WAP browser are internal means through which various popular websites like Facebook and YouTube can be accessed. The variability in the speed of the web depends upon the size of the websites or the data that the user is trying to access. Data can be downloaded as well like songs, games, images, and videos.

Internal and External Memory

Micromax Bolt A40 has very little to exploit in terms of internal memory with just 75MB. So considering this is an Android device, one has to accept that a microSD card slot is going to come into use sooner than later with a 32GB external memory expansion limit it offers. RAM of 512MB is alright but certainly less than what one would prefer for a fast pace device.

Applications and Gaming

Micromax Bolt A40 comes with a game called 3 in 1 bubble but beyond that, there are not many games pre-installed in the gadget. The user can download a lot more from the web and same is the case with applications but one cannot deny the fact that since the Android Gingerbread operating system is quite a bit far away from Jelly Bean , various games and applications would be missed out by the user.

Battery Backup

Micromax Bolt A40 is sparked off by a standard lithium-ion battery of 1500mAh, which in turn, churns out a talk time of up to 4 and half hours while the standby time goes up to as high as 175 hours, which is a little less than what is ideal.

Connectivity Offered

Micromax Bolt A40 tenders one USB port and Bluetooth for data exchange purposes with the former working through a USB cable and the latter wirelessly. Data that can be exchanged include songs, games, images, and videos. Wi-Fi is another data connectivity feature for exploring the web. The smartphone works at 900MHz and 1800MHz for both the GSM SIMs.

Micromax Bolt A40 when compared to KarbonnA4 has a similar screen size with 4.5 inches for the former and 4 inches for the latter. Micromax Bolt A40 runs on the Android Gingerbread operating system as compared to the Android Ice Cream Sandwich software platform used by Karbonn A4. Micromax Bolt A40 comes with a single core processor while Karbonn A4 has a dual core processor. The primary camera for Micromax Bolt A40 is of 2-megapixel and is weaker than the 3.15-megapixel offered by Karbonn A4. However, Micromax Bolt A40 has a VGA secondary camera while the same is absent in Karbonn A4. A 1500mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers the Micromax Bolt A40 while a 1250mAh standard lithium-ion battery triggers the Karbonn A4.
