Over all Review of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R
Another day in the smartphone business and we have another phablet to look forward to. It just goes to show the rate at which the smartphone industry is growing. Almost three years ago, the concept of a phablet was just a phenomenon and not embraced by most when Samsung came out with the Note 2. The phablet then became a rage and it was not too long before all the firms started to cash in on the concept and before we knew it, phablets are no longer a novelty. Micromax has grown a lot over the years and has done well for itself and also happens to be a heavy producer of phablets. Therefore, we have another one on our hands by the name of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R, which has a huge screen of 5.5 inches backed by a capacitive IPS display.
The look of the device is really classy and better than what we have seen from Micromax devices in the past. One may go as far ahead as saying that the device does give you a premium feel when held in your palms. The device, Micromax Canvas Tube A118R has a dominant 1.2GHz quad core processor that is going to be competitive on most occasions. RAM is also adequate to complement the hardware of the gadget and make the overall functioning of the gadget, a lot smoother and effective. For a device that is being projected as a premium handset, we expected a more updated version than the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 for its software platform. One can expect an upgrade in the coming time but even with the given operating system, the user can get a number of games and applications to access.
The camera department does impress us with an 8 megapixels primary camera and a 2 megapixels secondary camera. The resolution is stacked up for the rear shutter with 3264 by 2448 pixels while for the front shutter, drops down a bit with just 1600 by 1200 pixels. There are a lot more assisting tools for the primary camera with LED flash and auto focus but the same are not available with the secondary camera. Internet facilities would play an important part for video calling provisions via the front camera and Micromax Canvas Tube A118R provides GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi and HTML5 browser for the same. Wi-Fi hot spot is an important feature that Micromax Canvas Tube A118R gives out for allowing other compatible gadgets to access the web through the connection of the phablet. GPRS and USB port are provided but there is no information on the presence or absence of NFC.
The internal memory is still unknown as far as its exact figure is concerned but anything less than 8GB would be a surprise. There is however, a microSD card slot which in any case, can be used for a 32GB expansion. The device, Micromax Canvas Tube A118R comes with the dual standby mode that helps the dual SIM facility of the gadget by allowing the user to keep two GSM SIMs activated. A 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers the handset to belt out a prolonged talk time and standby time.
User Interface and UI functionality
Micromax Canvas Tube A118R boasts of a 5.5 inches IPS capacitive display that looks sharp and accurate in terms of color resolution. The color resolution depth to be exact is of 16 million colors.
Songs and movies are the major source of entertainment and thus, the multimedia department gets bolstered by the presence of music and video player. FM radio is another way to listen to music and also record songs that are being played on various local radio stations.
Pictures and Video quality
The image quality of the output produced by the 8 megapixels camera is wonderful with a muscular resolution of 3264 by 2448 pixels. Micromax Canvas Tube A118R also has a front secondary camera that holds 2 megapixels under its belt, more than enough to ensure image clarity while video calling.
Accessing web would be easy with Micromax Canvas Tube A118R via the HTML5 browser, GPRS and EDGE facilities. The user gets a respectable downloading and web surfing speed that can go up in favorable conditions with the device being compatible for 3G technology. Wi-Fi hot spot, DLNA and dual band can be expected as a part of the connectivity features in Micromax Canvas Tube A118R.
Internal and External Memory
Micromax Canvas Tube A118R is set to get a microSD card slot of 32GB ceiling but how much of internal memory is going to be provided is still not known. The user can still expect anything above or at par with 4GB.
Applications and Gaming
The huge 5.5 inches display is always going to be an advantage for games like Temple Run or Virtual Tennis or any other racing game. Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system would certainly not disappoint the user when it comes to choices as Micromax Canvas Tube A118R allows the user to download more games and applications in huge proportions.
The presence of 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery is what Micromax Canvas Tube A118R flaunts, which though good, might not match the standards set by other phablets. At the moment, there is no official information on how long the device can last or the talk time offered.
Micromax Canvas Tube A118R would operate at frequencies of 900 and 1800MHz for the GSM SIMs. For transmission of data like songs, games, images and videos, the user would get facilities like USB port and Bluetooth. For Internet, the phablet gets features such as Wi-Fi, HTML5, GPRS and EDGE.
Micromax Canvas Tube A118R, when compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 3, has a smaller screen of 5.5 inches for the former and 5.7 inches for the latter. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a Stylus pen while Micromax Canvas Tube A118R does not have the same. Micromax Canvas Tube A118R has a 1.2GHz quad core processor under its hood while Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has an octa core processor that simply crushes the hardware of the former.
The microSD card slot of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R has a 32GB threshold while the limit for the microSD card slot of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is of 64GB. The secondary camera is at par in both the phablets with 2 megapixels but the primary camera is stronger in Samsung Galaxy Note 3 with 13 megapixels as compared to 8 megapixels of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R. A 3200mAh standard lithium-ion battery powers Samsung Galaxy Note 3, again dominating the 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R.

25 January, 2014: The successful Indian smartphone manufacturing firm, Micromax, is out with another mid carter phablet by the name of Micromax Canvas Tube A118R. The device comes with a big 5.5 inches IPS display and runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system. The device has an 8 megapixels primary camera at the back and a 2 megapixels secondary at its face with a 1.2GHz quad core processor under the hood. There is no confirmation on the actual release date or the price of the device but the gadget can be expected to come out any time next month. The highlights of the device are as follows:
* 5.5 inches IPS capacitive display
* Dual SIM
* 1.2GHz Quad core processor
* 8 megapixels primary camera + 2 megapixels secondary camera
* microSD card slot up to 32GB
* Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system
* 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery
Micromax has been a revelation in the last few years and has become one of the most successful Indian smartphone manufacturing firms. The company almost touched the sales figure of Samsung last season to secure a strong second position behind the South Korean giant, which in itself, is a great indicator of how far Micromax has come. However, the road ahead is going to be tougher than ever and Micromax would have to keep at what is doing by going global with Hollywood actor, Hugh Jackman as one of its brand ambassadors. At the moment, Micromax is keen on producing phablets as we have seen quite a few of them and keeping in line with this trend is the Micromax Canvas Tube A118R. This phablet is blessed with a massive 5.5 inches IPS display that holds a powerful resolution and an average pixel density.
There is no confirmation on the RAM capacity of the device, but the processor is surely encouraging with 1.2GHz quad core complementing the Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2 operating system well. The gadget, Micromax Canvas Tube A118R could be a paradise for gaming lover should it receives the Android KitKat update, but for now, Jelly Bean is what the user would have to work with. One has to put forward the point that the gadget is elegant and sophisticated in terms of looks with a 8 megapixels primary camera attached at the back and a 2 megapixels shutter at the front. The resolution of the primary camera is on the higher side with 3264 by 2448 pixels, unlike what the front camera offers with 1600 by 1200 pixels. Digital zoom, LED flash and auto focus are the accompanying features of the primary camera. Though, videos can be captured by both the cameras, the primary camera would be much more helpful and for video calling, the secondary camera should be the prefererred choice.
Micromax Canvas Tube A118R consists of dual SIM and dual standby time for two GSM SIMs. USB port, Bluetooth, GPRS, EDGE, HTML5 browser and Wi-Fi are part of the goodies in the connectivity department. In addition to all that, the user gets Wi-Fi hot spot and DLNA as features to its tethering repertoire. The internal memory although is not specified, should at least touch 4GB if not 8GB. To hike that storage space, the user can go with the microSD card slot that has a 32GB margin and should suffice for a massive data collection of songs, games, images and videos. A 2300mAh standard lithium-ion battery is what supplies power to the large sized phablet that should generate in response, a long talk time and standby time. A powerful battery would come in useful for more intense applications like music player and video player that can deliver access to songs and videos of desired choice.
