Expert Review of Nokia Asha 202 Red
Nokia Asha 202 is an end product of a recipe that puts together multiple mobile technologies and features from various cell phones. It is a touch and type dual-SIM phone that wraps a bit of this and a bit of that in a single package and gives the entire experience. A 2 Megapixel camera, superior sound quality MP3 player, stereo FM player with recording, Facebook, Twitter and popular email services, Java games and long battery life- it’s all there.
User Interface and UI functionality
Nokia Asha 202 uses two input methods- touch and type. A 2.4- inch QVGA resistive touch screen is easy to use and manages to look uncluttered despite its compact size. This can be attributed to optimum utilization of touch sensitive input techniques like the swipe left action launches favorite contacts screen while the swipe right launches games and apps. These actions can be customized to launch the feature that is availed most frequently by a particular user. The homescreen is personalisable as well, to suit the user’s requirement. Resistive touch being less sensitive than capacitive touch prevents unintentional actions being performed due to a slight touch by mistake.
For the type input Nokia Asha 202 has an ITU-T type keypad which is more compact and cost-effective than a QWERTY keypad. The responsiveness of keypad and touch screen is satisfactory owing to Nokia’s robust Series 40 Asha OS installed in Nokia Asha 202. It measures 114.8 mm in length, 49.8 mm in breadth and 13.9 mm in width. It weighs only 90 g including the weight of its BL-5C battery.
The best feature however is the Easy Swap functionality between two SIM cards without turning your phone off. It lets user control connection costs, get the best deals, and keep personal and work life separate. Users can also store settings for up to 5 SIM cards using the SIM Manager, and assign calling, SMS or browsing to different SIMs. The flexible phone book memory supports multiple number of entries per name, with personal thumbnail pictures. The UI supports multiple numbers per name, preferred numbers, caller groups, address fields, home page field, and e-mail address. It is also possible to add a thumbnail image or video clip to a phonebook entry.
Nokia Asha 202 promises a seamless music experience with notable 6hrs and 30 minutes of total video playback time and 25 hrs of music playback time. This combined with a MP3 player with speaker loudness up to 106phon that supports key Codecs like AAC, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, MIDI, MP3, MP4, WAV, 3gp and WMA takes away the worries of incompatible formats. Further, a widely compatible 3.5mm audio jack makes output a smooth issue. Availability of Stereo FM with all the above mentioned features makes Nokia Asha 202 a reliable company for long journeys.
Pictures and Video quality
2 megapixels camera in Nokia Asha 202 has a full screen view finder as well as easy on-screen touch controls. The output image format is JPEG but GIF, BMP, IPEG, WBMP and PNG formats are also supported. An inbuilt photo editor can rotate, flip and crop images. Further clipart, text and frames can be added and a swirl-effect can be applied to any image before sharing it on supported social networking sites. Video clips from camera are converted in format of H.263, H.264 and MPEG-4 (audio in AMR-NB and/or AAC) that is stored in .3gp and .mpg file formats.
Even though a mid range phone, internet experience of Nokia Asha 202 supersedes most of its competitors. Kudos to the inbuilt Nokia Browser with a promising tag line ‘Surf more for less’ that compresses web data up to 90%. This not only means faster page loads but also lower data charges. Also, one touch access to options, current page, favourites, web apps and bring focus back to browser chrome and full screen browsing makes navigation and surfing much easier even on the small screen size.
Nokia Asha 202 also comes preloaded with Nokia Messaging Service 3.2 which includes popular Email services like Yahoo, Hotmail Gmail and Ovi Mail and Chat services like MSN/Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, Google Talk, OVI Chat, Facebook Chat and MySpace IM and Nokia Social 2.0 package which includes Twitter, Facebook, Flickr Image Upload apps. These apps are most surfed by mobile internet users and are customized to fir screen size of Nokia Asha 202 and deliver optimized performance.
Internal and External Memory
Nokia Asha 202, unfortunately, scores slightly low in terms of internal memory which is only 10 MB. However, the phone is equipped to expand its memory with the use of external microSD memory card up to 32 GB. It is unlikely that Nokia Asha 202 users will experience a memory shortage with such huge external memory that can be availed for apps and user data.
Applications and Gaming
Nokia Asha 202 support almost all Java based games as it is built on Java MIDP 2.1 software platform. It offers an exclusive package of 40 downloadable EA game titles, including Tetris, Bejeweled, Need for Speed, The Run, Monopoly, Here & Now, SimCity Deluxe and many more. It is left upon users to load their favorite games.
There are plenty of preloaded applications. On one side there are internet related apps like Nokia Browser, Nokia Messaging Service 3.2, Nokia Social 2.0, Nokia Store, Nokia Life, Nokia Maps and EA Hub Launcher and there are data management app called personal information management application (PIM) that contains Alarm Clock, Calendar, To Do List, Notes, Calculator, Stopwatch/countdown timer, storage for up to 1000 contacts, Improved China Lunar Calendar and World Clock.
Nokia battery life is one feature that has brought most loyalty amongst its customers and has rarely let them down. Nokia Asha 202 carries the legacy as its BL-5C 1020mAh Li-Ion battery delivers a maximum talk time of 5 hrs and maximum stand by time of 650 hrs or 27 days. Maximum video playback time is 6 hrs 30 min and maximum music playback time is 25 hrs.
Nokia Asha 202 is a dual SIM phone. The data and call management through multiple SIMs is implemented with such perfection that it feels like a single SIM. It has GRPS rel-6, class B and GPRS multi-slot Class 12 technologies. Edge multislot class 12 RX is also available. EGSM operates at frequency of 900/1800 Hz. Apart from this, Nokia Asha 202 supports Bluetooth 2.1, conference calling, 3.5mm AV connector, stereo FM radio with recording feature and Micro USB connector and charging.
For a phone that clubs such diverse features, there are little competitors in market. However, Nokia C2, a touch and type dual-SIM slider phone, available in market boasts a bigger screen size but is slightly costlier.
