Expert Review of Nokia C3 01 Silver
Nokia C3 01 is a brilliant endeavor of Nokia and this product that they have newly launched is sure going to be highly useful to the Nokia lovers. Its physical appearance and overall finish is also nice but it suffers from serious drawbacks on the software part. The implementation of S60 (the latest Symbian OS enhanced for touch) would have been much better, though the UI is nice, if not the best. It is priced a little more than what it has in store to offer. Several cheaper Android phones featuring full touchscreen and a better operating system are available in this price bracket.
User Interface and UI functionality
The operating system of Nokia C3 01 is S40 6th edition, that is, enhanced for touch. It has some direct implications and we are absolutely pleased with the increased usage that touch support has rendered to a basically standard and restricted OS.
The taps of the fingers are not very easy to register since the 2.4 inch touch screen is of resistive type. However, it is really fascinating when compared to the D-pads used in other non-touch phones. The pixels resolution of the touch display is also trivial. There are soft keys beneath the screen. The centre one goes to main apps menu on single tap. The right hand key goes to names in the contact list while the left hand key takes users to personalized set of nine shortcuts.
There are four distinct horizontal panels that displays whatever users choose from these nine options by hitting the home-screen settings on the personalized screen. Though the whole system is very flexible but there is just one homescreen on S40 to play with.
When one needs to open the apps, again a convoluted framework of nested folders comes before the eyes. One has to scroll vertically through the apps folder to access the exact app and games.
Facebook and Twitter are taken care of by Nokia's Communities app which can be dropped on the Home screen and there only one can also get Twitter and Facebook updates after logging in. This also helps users to gather all the notifications on both these social networking sites. To see the complete details, one has to tap the message and wait for the Communities to log in to the Internet and present the right screen. One has to manually import the social networking sites contacts to the contacts app of the phone in a bit tedious and old fashioned style.
On the whole, the multimedia features of Nokia C3 01 are not very likeable. This is strange as we expect much from Nokia phones.
Nevertheless, the FM signal reception is nice and even the integrated music player supports all the possible music formats. The integrated speaker is not loud but at least clear. There is also a 3.5 mm a/v jack to attach to any headphone. The 5 megapixels camera is also there on the rear side of the device.
Pictures and Video quality
The camera of Nokia C3 01 has high pixel count, that is, 5 megapixels but it lacks the ability to perform. The clicked stills lack details though the colors are okay. The single LED flash is good and helps greatly in low light conditions but not for capturing things farther than 4 feet. It also serves as torch in dark and that can be done by pressing the star symbol (*) for long.
Videos are shot at 640 x 480 pixels resolution and are still jerky but the lens is good as it lets in ample light for good results.
There are two web browsers in Nokia C3 01 touch and type phone. One is the Nokia’s own web browser which is a bit tedious too use. This is because of the slow processor of the phone that thinks and then comes into action. Zooming and panning is very difficult and slow due to slow processor speed. Also small screen of the phone does not let users see things clearly.
When one switches to Opera mini browser, things improve greatly. Here the overview page can be zoomed in with single tap. Once zoomed, not much of panning is required to see the text. The overall experience isn’t great but better than the one achieved on Nokia browser. On the whole browsing is jerky and painful and not recommended.
Internal and External Memory
There is 128 MB of ROM and 64 MB of RAM support in Nokia C3 01. It supports external microSD card of maximum 32 GB capacity.
Applications and Gaming
There is a whole range of typically S40 OS based apps on Nokia C3 01. The standard stuff like the calendar, alarm clock, calculator, voice recorder, to-do list, note app, timer and stopwatch is obviously there. The apps may look terrible but they all function satisfactorily.
To add more apps and games to the stock, one may use the OVI store.
On the whole, the battery backup in Nokia C3 01 is satisfactory. It has a standard Li-Ion battery of 1050 mAH.
Nokia C3 01 is fully featured in the connectivity department. It boasts HSPA+ which supports up to 10.2 Mbps download speed and also has WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, and the USB cable for wired connection.
While the users of Nokia C3 01 will encounter problems while connecting to the mobile internet network, the Wi Fi settings are easy to access.
Samsung Galaxy Pro is a candy bar GSM phone just like Nokia C3 01 mobile handset. It has a slightly bigger, 2.8 inches wide TFT resistive touch-screen display and also has higher resolution as well. It is also equipped with 3.15 megapixels camera with LED flash and video recording facility. There is 512 MB internal memory and up to 32GB external memory with microSD memory card in the Samsung Galaxy Pro. Another attractive attribute of the Samsung Galaxy Pro is its Android v2.2 Froyo operating system that is coupled with a powerful 800 MHz processor. The connectivity features are similar to Nokia C3 01 and it also boasts Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, USB cable port and Wi Fi 802.11 b/g/n. The handset is enabled with Adobe Flash 10.1 support and also enjoys Java third party applications support.
