Expert Review of Nokia E5 Carbon Black
Nokia E5 is a low-end phone in the business oriented E series by Nokia that does not boast any touchscreen no jaw dropping features but still, the E5 sticks to the basics that make Nokia E series such a hit among enterprise-users. This smartphone adopts the style and form factor of Nokia E72 in terms of QWERTY keypad, landscape screen and business oriented features but is priced lower than its earlier siblings. The body of this device is covered in plastic with the exception of its battery cover and despite of having a plastic body, it provides a solid feel, appropriate weight and curved edges to provide a comfortable hold. With the size of 115 mm x 58.9 mm x 12.8 mm, Nokia E5 weighs 126 grams only, comes in five variant colors- carbon black, sky blue, silver grey, copper brown and chalk white. Its body is not covered with any chrome rim to provide any differentiation to the keys. The QWERTY keyboard is the main USP of this smartphone where the keys are made of rubber and provide comfort facilitate decent typing speeds. The four way d-pad navigator button, that is placed between the screen and the keypad, is covered with a slightly thick rim to provide ease to the user while operating it and on the right side of this button, there is a chrome button that will directly lead you to the message folder with a single touch whereas on the left side, a home button is placed to have an access to the home screen. On the back, there is a space for camera, LED Flash and a mono-speaker, the top of the body consists of a micro USB port, a standard Nokia charging port and a jack for 3.5 mm earphones, both sides have a battery release button on their respective lower halves and the right side also has a volume rocker at the top that makes this small device usable from all the six sides.
User Interface and UI functionality
Nokia E5 boasts a 2.36 inch non-touch screen TFT LCD display that is capable of providing a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels with the color depth of 256K giving a density of approximately 169 ppi pixels. Instead of running on the commonly used OS, Android, this business smartphone works on Symbian v.9.3 Nokia Series 60 OS and is powered by 600 MHz ARM 11processor that makes it work with more faster speed and with more accuracy than its earlier kinfolks. The phone has a single home screen, number of home screen themes and two totally different easy switch modes such as Business and Personal with theme customization feature. There is around six different home screen customization and talking theme is an advantage there, also there is around eight pre-installed phone themes, and you can always install more according to your taste. Home screen also features contact bar that allows you to add photo contacts, RSS feeds, call and message alerts everything that can not be seen before in any other smartphone available in the market and this device also has ‘Application shortcuts’, e-mail , WLAN, search and Chat notifications that provides easy access to such applications to the user in order to save time and energy.
Nokia E5 seems to be a small handset but it is fully loaded with lots of features and applications that can keep the user busy 24 x 7. It supports numerous audio and video formats so that the user can dive into the seamless world of entertainment without any obstacle. Audio formats such as AU, AAC, AAC+, AMR-WB, HE AAC V2, MP3, MP4, M4A, True tones, WAV, RealAudio 7, RealAudio 8, RealAudio 10, SP-MIDI and WMA and video formats like H.264/AVC, MPEG-4, RealVideo 7,8,9/10, WMV, 3GPP formats, H.263 and Flash Video are supportable in this mini device. Nokia E5 also has the facility of FM radio with RDS technology that enables the user to record songs directly from the radio so that they can provide richness to their music collection and this is not enough as this smartphone comes pre installed with various audio features such as Audio Equalizer, Audio Streaming, Stereo Widening, Loudness, Music player and Audio Recording AAC that will add more spice to the music experience.
Pictures and Video quality
Nokia E5 is bestowed with a 5 MP fixed focus camera with LED Flash and supports camera features such as Sequence Mode, Red-eye reduction, Full Focus, Auto Exposure, Self-timer, 4x Digital Zoom, Flash and Full screen viewfinder. This camera provides a picture of size 2592 x 1944 pixels and is capable of recording videos in size 640 x 480 pixels at 15 frames per second with video formatting features like video editor, Video sharing, Video recorder, Video player and Video streaming. The images taken from this 5 MP camera are saved in .JPEG/Exif format.
Nokia E5 allows the user to have unlimited access to Internet via GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi, WLAN and DLNA at HSPA+ speed and this device also enables the user to have connectivity to the nearby devices with the help of Bluetooth and USB port.
Internal and External Memory
Nokia E5 is blessed with an internal storage capacity 250 MB with 256 MB of RAM along with a 2 GB card that is supportable via microSD card slot that can extend the external memory up to 32 GB. With such a huge amount of storage capacity, the user can store an enormous amount of data in their Nokia E5.
Applications and Gaming
Nokia E5 has the native YouTube application, Ovi Store, Adobe PDF (Full version), Intranet, Zip, Active notes, converter, Dictionary, Traveler, File Mgr, Bloomberg and AP Mobile are few of those applications that comes pre-installed and are worth a spin. Apart from this, this device comes pre-installed with some of the games and to add more fun, it supports Java that makes the gaming experience a real fun and the user can also download games from the net according to their choice and preference.
Nokia E5 has a standard Li-Ion 1,200 mAh BL-4D 3.7V battery that provides a talktime up to 5.2 hours on 3G, a standby time of 670 hours on 3G and 38 hours of continuous music playback.
Nokia E5 supports GSM on 2G and 3G networks at a bandwidth of 850/900/1800/1900 MHz and 850/900/1900/2100 MHz respectively at HSDPA speed of 10.2 Mbps and HSUPA speed of 2 Mbps.
Nokia E5 is a nice a durable business-oriented handset that cannot be compared with BlackBerry business phones, but is somewhat better than its earlier siblings in terms of processing speed, solid body and price and it is also a great e-mail device that provides access up to 10 personal e-mail accounts on phone including Hotmail, Gmail and Yahoo Mail.
