Oppo N1 White - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

The number of Chinese brands in the smartphone market has really taken a hike in the last few years but even then, it is hard to think of a name that has really made an impact in the market when it comes to reputation. The standards have been picking up but in the midst of so many brands already existent in the market, it is going to be difficult for a firm to superimpose itself over others. Oppo N1 is a stylish looking smartphone or rather a phablet from the Chinese firm Oppo that comes with a length of 170.87mm, breadth of 82.6mm and thickness of 9mm. The device is a little heavy with 213 grams and features 5.9 inches IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen that gives 16 million colors and a resolution of 1080 by 1920 pixels with a fantastic pixel density of 373ppi.

The device also has a touch sensitive area at the back for scrolling, sliding, and long press. With 1.7GHz quad core processor and 2GB of RAM, the device looks sharp and powerful with more support from color operating system based on Android Jelly Bean 4.2. Its 13 megapixels primary camera is astute too with a resolution of 4128 by 3096 pixels with features like auto focus, rotating lens, touch focus, geo-tagging and dual LED flash for support. Video recordings can be done at 1080 pixels in high definition. We are used to see a primary camera of such strength but with Oppo N1, the secondary camera also blows us away with another 13 megapixels backup for video calling and clicking self-images. A dual LED flash is provided for the same too. A microSD card slot is provided for Oppo N1 but the gadget is available in two versions of 16GB and 32GB respectively.

Internet and rest of the data connectivity gel along well too with Wi-Fi, dual band, Wi-Fi direct, DLNA and Wi-Fi hot spot adding to the tethering facilities of the gadget. USB port, GPRS, EDGE, and HTML5 browser are also the components of the same. The phablet is available in the single color of White with a standard lithium-ion battery of 3610mAh for support. There are some unique aspects of the gadget like O-click Bluetooth remote control and SNS integration. There is support for both 2G and 3G technology along with multiple band frequencies. Music player, video player, and FM radio add to the entertainment value of the device with support for songs and movies in diverse formats.

User Interface and UI functionality

Oppo N1 offers a 5.9-inch IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen with 16 million colors and resolution of 1920 by 1080 pixels. The pixel density of 373ppi makes sure the user can enjoy dense and rich images. The user can scroll, long press, slide or double tap using the touch sensitive area at the back.

Multimedia features

Oppo N1 can be used as a music player that can store loads of songs personally selected by the user and played in the formats of MP3, WAV, eAAC+, AC3 and FLAC player. Video player runs videos in the formats of MP4, DivX, XviD, WMV, H.264, and H.263 player and that too in high definition. FM radio works well too for accessing radio stations.

Pictures and Video quality

Oppo N1 provides a 13 megapixel primary camera, which is obviously extraordinary in terms of strength but something that we have not seen before. But the same cannot be said about the secondary camera which also happens to have a 13 megapixels backup something that we have not witnessed before. Both the shutters are able to capture pictures at a resolution of 4128 by 3096 pixels and have dual LED flash. The rear camera also has some other features like rotating lens, geo-tagging, auto focus, touch focus, face detection, panorama, high definition recording, and long exposure.

Internet support

Oppo N1 has Wi-Fi hot spot, DLNA, Wi-Fi direct and dual band to sum up the tethering facilities of the gadget that make sure that other devices can connect to the web via Oppo N1. So, an individual server is created for foreign compatible devices. GPRS, EDGE, and HTML5 browser stand as they are for providing internal means to access the web.

Internal and External Memory

Oppo N1 shows itself in two versions in terms of internal memory with 16GB and 32GB respectively. There is however, no microSD card present in either of the versions. Still, even with the given memory, the user can store loads of data like songs, games, images and videos. RAM of 2GB is nothing short of formidable.

Applications and Gaming

Oppo N1 has access to all the popular Android games like Virtual tennis, F1 Race, Death Moto, Angry Birds etc, and applications like Viber and WhatsApp via Google play store. With Android Jelly Bean 4.2 OS, the user would not miss any similar content.

Battery Backup

There is no official information on the amount of talk time and standby time that Oppo N1 shall provide but one can safely assume that with the powerful 3610mAh standard lithium-ion battery, the user would be able to enjoy the features of the gadget for a longer duration.

Connectivity Offered

Oppo N1 bundles up USB port, USB OTG, Bluetooth, NFC, GPRS and EDGE as connectivity options. To add to these, the user gets Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi hot spot, dual band, DLNA and Wi-Fi direct as internet tethering features.

Oppo N1 when compared to Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a bigger display with 5.9 inches for the former and 5.7 inches for the latter. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen whereas Oppo N1 comes with IPS LCD capacitive touchscreen. Samsung Galaxy Note 3 has 3GB of RAM whereas Oppo N1 offers 2GB of RAM. Oppo N1 does not have a microSD card slot while Samsung Galaxy Note 3 comes with a 64GB microSD card slot. The primary camera is at par with 13 megapixels for both the phablets but secondary camera is hugely weak for Note3 as compared to Oppo N1. Oppo N1 sports a mighty 13 megapixels secondary camera whereas Samsung Galaxy Note3 comes with a 2 megapixel secondary camera. Oppo N1 is backed by 3610mAh standard lithium-ion battery whereas Samsung Galaxy Note 3 is driven by 3200mAH standard lithium-ion battery.

Real camera innovation in a swivel

This review originally published November 20, 2013, on CNET's sister site CNET Asia. For full-resolution images, see the original review. Announced in October, the Oppo N1 isn't your typical smartphone. For one, it's huge -- the 5.9-inch full-HD display takes up most of the space, and it comes with something you seldom see in a smartphone: a rotating 13-megapixel camera that you can flip over to take a selfie. DesignPacking the aforementioned large display, the Oppo N1's shape reminds me of the Read full Review

Oppo N1 review: a cameraphone that puts selfies first

If our articles have been tagged properly, the first mention of Oppo on Engadget dates back to August 2005. No one would have thought that this then-fledgling DVD player manufacturer -- a spin-off from Vivo's parent company BBK -- would end up making some interesting smartphones. It's funny how both of these Chinese brands have been getting our attention lately with top specs, nice designs and reasonable prices. However, in terms of global reach, Oppo is well ahead with its presence in Thailand, Read full Review

Oppo N1 review

Oppo has got a mammoth mountain to climb to become the familiar name that it wants to be for a European audience. Good job it's just released the N1, then, a mammoth-sized phablet that's certain to grab your attention. It will do so for a number of reasons. Primarily because that 5.9-inch 1080p screen is huge, firmly nestling it in the phablet rather than smartphone space. Secondly there's a 13MP camera on board mounted on a 120-degree rotational bracket. Say hello to standard shots, selfies, and Read full Review
