Over all Review of Samsung Google Nexus S Black
Samsung Google Nexus S is the first smartphone co-developed by Google and Samsung and is the first one to have Android Gingerbread platform along with NFC support. It is a mid ranging royal droid and is the third phone by Google in the Nexus series and the amazing processor makes this phone one of the fastest phone in the market. The processor works with great speed where the menus open faster, tabs are more responsive and web pages load quicker with virtually no lag time and the users can switch between applications effortlessly with true multitasking on Android. This smartphone shares a lot of components of Samsung Galaxy S in terms of processor, memory and operating system. Samsung Google Nexus S comes has a candy bar form factor and comes packed in a size of 123.9 mm x 63 mm x 10.9 mm with 129 grams of weight, which means that the users can easily carry this smartphone in their hands for long duration of time. In front, it has a capacitive touchscreen, which is very beautiful and responsive that reacts even to the slightest touch. The typical Android controls for Back, Menu, Home and Search are capacitive in touch and are located below the display and these buttons have impressively smooth and precise haptics. Above the display one will find the earpiece, two hidden sensors (proximity and ambient light) and a front-facing VGA camera for video calling. The right side and the left side hosts only one button each where the latter is the home for volume rocker while the former has lock/power key. The top of the device is buttonless and portless whilst the bottom has the mouthpiece, the standard microUSB port, which is used both for charging and data connections, and the 3.5 mm audio jack. At the back of the handset, there is a camera lens along with LED flash to help the users to take those tricky low-light shots and the loudspeaker grill is nearby. Under the back cover, one will find the powerful standard battery and the SIM compartment. It is a good looking phone with solid built, where the chassis are all made up of plastic and the curved edges help in the comfortable holding of the device.
User Interface and UI functionality
Samsung Google Nexus S has a Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen of size 4 inches, that is protected by oleophobic coating that makes the display fingerprint resistant. This amazing display provides a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels with 16M of color depth and a pixel density of 233 ppi, that makes the viewing angles impressive and brings more sharpness to the screen. The display has multi touch facility that enables the users to enter multiple commands with the screen at one go. Running on Android v.2.3 Gingerbread platform, which allows access to more than 1,50,000 applications, this smartphone is powered by 1 GHz Cortex-A8 processor and has Hummingbird chipset along with PowerVR SGX540 GPU that helps to accelerate the image output in a frame buffer intended for output to a display. The display provides 75% less glare than on other smartphone displays, so the users can enjoy videos, pictures and games even when the sun is right on the head and the display look its best and the sun won't wash it out. The UI is customizable where the users can drag and drop the icons according to their wish and need. There are five personalized homescreens and each has grown two shortcuts around the virtual menu key – dialer and browser. The users can toggle between the various homescreens with the help of dots in the bottom left and right corners, which indicates how many screens are left and in what direction. The users can tap on the dots to move in that direction and a tap and hold brings up a thumbnail overview of all homescreen panes. The main menu is vertically scrollable with icons at the top and bottom edge curving off into the distance and the users can create a shortcut for just about everything either an application, a bookmark, a contact, a Gmail label or even a destination. Overall, the interface is nice, manageable and is completely amazing.
In terms of multimedia, Samsung Google Nexus S is little disappointing, as there is no default video player in this smartphone and the users have to download or install the video player available in the Android market. In case of music player, there is a one preinstalled but that too requires a room for improvement. It the default music player, there are four tabs, which offer the four main ways to search the music collection - by artist, album, song or the playlists the users have created and search by gradual typing is also available. Audio formats such as MP3, WAV, Eaac+ and AC3 player are supportable on this device and video formats such as MP4, H.264 and H.263 player support the video playback and video recording. Unfortunately, this device is also devoid of FM radio facility but to a little comfort, it has 3.5 mm jack that helps in attaching speakers or woofers to the device.
Pictures and Video quality
Samsung Google Nexus S comes loaded with a 5 MP auto focus camera with LED flash facility and has features such as Geo-tagging, touch focus, etc. that adds more fun to the photography. This camera can capture images with a resolution of 2560 x 1920 pixels and can record WVGA videos with 30 frames per second. The users can also edit the videos or images before sharing them on social sites like Facebook or Orkut, etc. This smartphone also has a secondary VGA camera that enables a user to have live video chats with family and friends.
Samsung Google Nexus S provides Internet connectivity options such as GPRS, EDGE, 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi Hotspot and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n via WLAN that enable the users to roam in the huge world of Internet and to collect information and share data on the social sites. The users can also connect the device with the nearby devices through Bluetooth v.2.1 with A2DP, NFC, DLNA and microUSB port v.2.0. DLNA connectivity helps the users to sync their TV with this smartphone and play videos on the more bigger screen of the TV.
Internal and External Memory
Samsung Google Nexus S comes with an internal capacity of 16 GB with 512 MB for RAM to enable the applications run properly. This phone has disappointed the users in another aspect as it lacks a microSD card slot also through which the users can expand the external memory of the device. Although, the built-in memory of the device is not very bad and is capable of storing a good quantity of data but when other smartphones' memory can be extended up to 32 GB and more, Samsung Google Nexus S is going to face a tough time even with the low end smartphones.
Applications and Gaming
Samsung Google Nexus S has Android Gingerbread platform, which allows access to more than 1,50,000 applications that are available in Android Market, so in terms of applications, this smartphone does not disappoint the users. One can also play and download Java supported and Android platform supported games form the online sites as well as from the Android market.
Samsung Google Nexus S has standard Li-Ion 1,500 mAh battery that is capable of keeping the device alive for a talktime up to 6 hours 30 minutes on 3G and 14 hours on 2G. Along with this, Google Nexus S provides a standby time up to 428 hours on 3G and 713 hours on 2G. The users can also play music for long time without any battery drainage.
Samsung Google Nexus S supports GSM 2G and 3G network only at a bandwidth of 850/900/1800/1900 MHz for 2G and 900/1700/2100 MHz for 3G. The users can download data at an HSDPA speed of 7.2 Mbps and can upload file at an HSUPA speed of 5.76 Mbps. The users can explore the world in 3D from the palm of their hand using Google Maps 5.0 with Navigation (Beta), Places, and Latitude. One can zoom, tilt, and rotate the map with two fingers to explore cities in 3D and can orient themselves with compass mode, which automatically rotates the map to the direction one is facing and the users can keep viewing the maps they use the most, even if they lose their connection. One can also find local spots like restaurants and ATMs using Places and can use navigation for free turn-by-turn GPS voice guidance with offline rerouting.
Samsung Google Nexus S is quite an outdated smartphone, which is running on the obsolete version of Android, does not have preinstalled video player, does not support FM radio, no space for expandable memory, has underpowered UI, not enough homescreen widgets, light design and has slight freezing at times. Though it has good camera, powerful processor and chipset, strong battery, stunning AMOLED display and cool lock screen animation, but still this smartphone is not capable of even competiting with the low end smartphones like HTC One V, Samsung Galaxy Y, Samsung Galaxy Y Duos, Nokia 500 and many more smartphones that are running on the updated and new platforms.
