Slowly but surely, the competition for 5-inch smartphone segment is searing up. Though there are many multinationals selling smartphones in this segment, it is the entry of domestic brands, which are spicing things up. Indian companies that know the local market and its sensitivity to prices are bringing high-end phones at much lesser prices than by their fancy foreign brethren. Spice is one such company, which is trying to break into the premium segment of the market after limited success in entry level and mid segment market. In this effort, it has brought out a quality product for the Indian consumer. This smartphone called Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 sports a massive 5-inch screen, with no hardware buttons on the front.
There are three capacitive touch keys below the screen that take you to Settings, Home, and Back menus. This White and Black coloured device has a glossy back cover with a speaker grille below, towards the left side. The power key is located on the right side, the volume key on the left side, and the micro USB slot and 3.5mm audio jack port are placed at the bottom and top respectively. The build quality of this phone is good but has a plastic feel to it. The 5-inch screen is fully capacitive and supports 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The pixel density of this phone is 480ppi, which renders the display bright and clear. The text appears sharp and crisp even under direct sunlight wherein, you will not face any reflective issue with this screen. At 149.4 x 74.9 x 9.3mm dimensions, the device can be used for one-hand operations. Though at 175gm, it is quite heavy to hold. Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 comes with Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. Spice has provided two themes with this set, one is a default theme with minor changes in its UI, and the second theme has a different set of icons and menu list. As the smartphone runs on Android 4.2.1, it comes with lock screen and Google’s NowApps pre-installed in it.
To run this super device, Spice has incorporated a 1.5GHz MediaTek MT 6589 Quad Core processor coupled with power VR 3GX 544MP GPU, 1GB of RAM, and 8GB of internal storage. You can add a further 32GB of external memory through a microSD card. Spice has provided an 8MP rear camera with dual LED flash but you would be very disappointed with its performance. The colours of the photos taken on this phone do not look real, and the edges of the images are a bit grainy, though a lot of picture modes have been provided with this smartphone. You also have a 2MP front camera for video chatting. This dual SIM phone supports 3G in both the SIMs, which is the USP of the phone. The two SIMs and the microSD cards are not hot swappable because they are placed with the battery. Spice has provided a lot of sensors in this device for smooth operations like the accelerometer and the gyro proximity sensor. It also has GPS with AGPS support, FM radio, and several pre-installed apps like YouTube, Facebook, mtracker, WhatsApp, Spice Cloud, and others. As Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 has a dedicated graphics card, you can play a lot of games on it without any hitches. To run this fantastic phone packed with high-end software and hardware, a 2100mAH battery is provided which gives enough backup to run throughout a day while playing games, listening to music, watching videos, and making calls.
User Interface and UI functionality
As you hold this device in your hand, you are struck by its enormous screen size, which is 5-inch and supports full HD at 1080 x 1920 pixels resolution. The pixel density is 480ppi, which allows the full capacitive display to project images that are bright, clear, and sharp. You will have no trouble in viewing images on this display even under direct sunlight. This 149.4 x 74.9 x 9.3mm phone is easy to hold but the weight of this device, which is 175gm, makes it bulky. There are three capacitive screens below the screen for Setting, Home, and Back functions. The power and volume keys are located on the right and left sides of this device respectively.
Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 runs on the recent Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean OS which is very intuitive and user friendly. Spice has done minimalistic skinning on some features of the OS like the menu list, icons, and few others. This phone comes with two themes, one is a default theme with minor changes in its UI, and the second has a different set of icons and menu list. It also comes with five customisable home screens. This phone comes with a screen locker that allows you to launch camera, clock, Gmail, GoogleNow, messaging, and few other apps from the lock screen itself. You can also change the settings of the Wi-Fi, screen brightness, auto rotation, Bluetooth, GPS, data, and screen time out from the notification tray. This releases the user from the drudgery of going through the phone’s settings. You will not find any lag when you toggle between the apps or scroll through a text.
Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 is packed with multimedia features be it, an FM radio - that allows you to listen to music from different radio channels, an audio player -that supports a lot of audio formats or a video player which though average in features, can record videos in full HD. This device has a 3.5mm audio jack that allows you to use your expensive headphone to get a better listening experience. The speaker of this phone is quite decent and gives you a loud output. The device supports Java through a Java MIDP emulator.

Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 has two cameras, an 8MP primary camera at the rear that can capture pictures in 3264 x 2448 pixels resolution or record full HD videos in 1080 pixels resolution. There is also a dual LED flash to take pictures in low light environment. The front camera is of 2MP resolution, which is very useful for video chatting. This device has a photo and video editor that allows you to adjust sharpness, saturation, hue, ISO, and brightness. The images taken are not of best quality inspite the presence of an 8MP camera. The colour looks artificially bright and the edges of the images are a bit grainy.
Spice Pinnacle FHD Mi-525 has a HTML 5 browser that allows you to open web pages without much problem. Scrolling, flipping, or zooming through web pages are very easy and fast. You can connect internet through 2G, 3G, or Wi-Fi.
