Expert Review of XOLO Q700 Black
Encouraged by the tremendous applause received from the users for its Xolo series, the international manufacturer Lava has decided to continue the arithmetic progression of its Xolo series of smartphones. One addition to this successful series is Lava XOLO Q700. Lava XOLO Q700 is a dual SIM (GSM:850/900/1800/1900 and WCDMA:2100) smartphone sporting a 4.5-inch IPS multi touch supporting touch screen display with qHD capability and protected by One Glass Solution as scratch resistant. The screen offers a maximum pixel resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. In terms of circuitry, a super fast 1.2GHz quad-core processor on a MTK6589W-M chipset powers the device. For enhanced graphical rendering and super smooth color reproduction, Lava XOLO Q700 is featured with PowerVR SGX544 GPU processor with a maximum clock frequency of 238MHz. Backed by 1GB of RAM, Lava XOLO Q700 has an internal memory of 4GB, and the external storage capacity can be further increased up to 32GB via its external microSD card slot. Lava XOLO Q700 runs on Google's latest 4.3 Jelly Bean Operating System (which is further upgradable).
In terms of optical capability, Lava XOLO Q700 is rolled out with a swift 5MP rear camera (with auto-focus and LED flash) and featured with BSI sensor to help fine tune photos and videos according to the light conditions. It has a front VGA camera that easily supports video calling. On data and network connectivity front, Lava XOLO Q700 supports 3G (HSPA+ 21Mbps (UL) and 11Mbps (DL)) with wireless connectivity that features including Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Bluetooth v3.0 (with A2DP support). Also, the device supports micro USB v2.0 for PC data connectivity and is featured with a 2400mAh battery that imparts life to it for a full day (6-10 hours on 3G + browsing).
User Interface and UI functionality
In terms of design and build, Lava XOLO Q700 is not a significant mutation from its predecessors (or other set of smartphones for that matter). It has a rectangular flat cut form factor that easily accommodates its 4.5-inch screen, which is an edge-to-edge glass. The ends are rounded in shape of a banana peel. Lava XOLO Q700 has sleek dimensions of 135.8mm x 67.5mm x 10.2mm with a weight of just 151.3 grams. It has a famous rugged body with a radiant screen and rear panel in matte finish texture. Below the screen, a navigation bar is provided featuring touch button navigation for home, back and menu. On the right edge lies the power button and the left edge features volume rocker. The top edge has openings for microUSB port and 3.5mm audio jack. The build quality is robust and does not look or feel cheap in its mono-frame design. For UI, Android Jelly Bean 4.3 operating system is featured out of the box, with some widgets (including Xolo home screen guard and some pre-loaded applications).
One great feature offered here is the Multi-Profile functionality, the first smartphone to do so. The multi profile feature allows you to add or create four different profiles on your Android smartphone similar to the multi users’ accounts on almost all major operating systems. The multi profile feature allows you to set up your profiles with different in-application accounts like different Gmail accounts, separate phone settings, different applications, different look and feel, and other things. Overall, there are five customizable home screens for the users to fill with apps and widgets of their choice. The settings menu and the standby lock screen of Lava XOLO Q700 are not enhanced much beyond some trebled sense. The apps are listed under four major heads such as Main, Applications, Games, and Widgets, as opposed to having just two main categories for Apps and Widgets in most Android smartphones.
Lava XOLO Q700 comes with a 4.5-inch IPS screen offering a maximum resolution of 540 x 960 pixels. The images are enhanced and color reproduction is found to be superb, all thanks to a dedicated GPU. The color vibrancy is detectable in a color variation test, which shows that the screen pixel rendering is indeed great. Even when no viewing angles are supported, the accelerometer in lateral mode allows the peaks. The device is fully capable of recording and playing full HD 1080p videos. The video formats supported are MP4, MPEG4, H.263, and H.264 formats. It must be added that supported formats can be enhanced by downloading and installing the required codecs from Google Play of a particular video format.
Lava XOLO Q700 is featured with 3.5mm audio jack and in-built FM radio functionalities (which includes auto-tune and FM recording options). Most of the common audio formats are supported and these include MP3, MIDI, WAV, 3GPP, AAC, and AAC+. The sound of inbuilt speakers is not intriguing but good and clear, no SRS is supported though in speaker mode.
Pictures and Video quality
Lava XOLO Q700 comes with 4.5-inch IPS qHD display protected by OGS technology. It has a dedicated GPU (PowerVR SGX544 is clocked at 238MHz) that offers a maximum pixel density of 245ppi. The true color rendering allows support for 16M colors. It can easily play HD quality videos without any lag or time/motion swap. The device has a rear 5MP camera featuring backside Illumination sensor to automate the light perception settings for the camera according to the ambient light conditions of shot-settings. The primary 5MP AF camera support offers a maximum picture resolution of 2592 х 1944pixel and has built-in autofocus and LED flash support. In addition, it comes with burst mode and can record HD videos (720p). Besides that, several camera features are included like Image Stabilization, Scene detection & tuning, High Dynamic Range (HDR), Low Light enhancement, Face recognition (For focusing as well as in Gallery), Scene Modes such as night, sunset, snow, party, portrait, theatre, and beach among others, Panorama capture, and Geo tagging.
The screen adjusts itself according to light conditions (ambient light sensor) even if the screen is bright under high-lit conditions such as ‘in sunlight’. So no hassles on that front remains and the screen is as responsive as ever. Lava XOLO Q700 is featured with a front facing 0.3MP VGA camera having fixed focus for self-portraits or video calling. The front camera does not offer stellar results, which are nonetheless unexpected of it anyway.
Internal and External Memory
Lava XOLO Q700 has 1GB of RAM and 4GB of internal memory (1.78GB available user space). The external storage space is expandable up to 32GB via its external microSD card slot.
Applications and Gaming
Lava XOLO Q700 performs very well in routine tasks and in UI navigation. With a high-end processor and 1GB of RAM, it can easily perform multitasking. It features Android Version 4.3 Jelly Bean out of the box with some minor tweaks and turns at places where needed. Features and widgets like lock screen, Day dream, Quick setting, Live wallpaper, and Multi Profile settings are all included into the device enabling it to beat its competition hands down.
The device also includes many pre-loaded apps such as Xolo Care, Xolo Power, Xolo Secure, and Xolo Switch applications. Xolo Care app helps in trouble-shooting any problem encountered in your phone and Xolo Power app allows users to efficiently manage battery life and set the preferences for background apps and running processes. It is featured with 'Low battery mode' to save battery in times of need and when no charging port is in the offing. Xolo Secure app helps retrieve user information and trace the mobile in case of theft. Xolo Switch app allows users to create multiple profiles on smartphone and easily switch from one to another. An app called Kid Tube is featured which filters explicit content from YouTube to make it "watchable" for kids.
Lava XOLO Q700 is featured with a very powerful 2400mAh Li-ion battery, which can give a maximum standby time of 350 hours, or a total talk time of up to 16 hours (3G). Besides that, there is firmware support for managing the battery efficiently. Xolo Power app allows users to efficiently manage battery life and set the preferences for background apps and running processes. It is featured with 'Low battery mode' to save battery by killing unnecessary processes and applications that drain battery. Xolo Power manages color brightness and display resolution according to battery levels and reports accurately calibrated battery levels instantly.
In terms of data connectivity features, Lava XOLO Q700 has much to offer - It is 3G (over WCDMA 2100MHz) enabled (HSPA+ 21Mbps (UL) and 11Mbps (DL) ), for wireless connectivity, it has Bluetooth (version 3.0 High Speed with A2DP) and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n wireless connectivity and an inbuilt GPS aided navigation capability. Besides, it also has a wireless LAN support via an in-built modem (481MHz CR4+FD216 240MHz DSP modem core). Lava XOLO Q700 also supports 2G (GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 MHz), and GPRS / EDGE internet data connectivity. It also has microUSB v2.0 for PC data connectivity but does not support NFC.
Lava XOLO Q700 in its price segment, primarily targets low to middle consumer segments and will face competition from other players of this segment including Lava Iris 504Q, Karbonn A2 and Micromax Canvas HD. Though not a clear winner against players like Micromax Canvas HD, price consideration can play a major role in determining who beats the game.
In terms of specs and user support, Lava XOLO Q700 is a better bet than Micromax Canvas HD, or Gionee Dream D1. Xolo Q700 offers a quad core processor against the dual core processor of Micromax Canvas A115 3D besides beating it in other dimensions (display resolution of 540 x 960 pixels qHD against that of 480 x 800 pixels, 1GB RAM against that of 512MB, and Android Version 4.2 Jelly Bean against that of old roll-out 4.1.2 in Canvas A115 3D). Though Micromax Canvas A115 3D offers a 5.0-inch LCD display, against that of 4.5-inch IPS display in Lava Xolo Q700, such difference is nuanced and not pronounced considering the battery support (2400 mAh Li-Ion in Xolo 700 against 2000 mAh Li-Ion in Canvas A115 3D).
Lava Xolo Q700 definitely has an upper hand when it comes to the market share against the much less popular Gionee Dream D1, even though hardware and specs offered are almost similar. Karbonn A2 is much less variant and doesn't even remotely compete but a better competitor from Karbonn Mobiles is Karbonn S2 Titanium offering a display resolution of 480 x 854 pixels on its 5.0-inch screen with a better placed 8.0MP camera. But it has an older Android 4.1 version of Android OS. Xolo Q700 offers a better battery backup (2400mAh Li-ion as against 2100mAh Li-Ion in Karbonn S2 Titanium). So overall, considering the price range and features on deck, Lava Xolo Q700 is a clear winner.
