Expert Review of Karbonn TA Fone A34 HD 2GB Wi-Fi Black
The understanding of what a tablet does and a what a smartphone does and now what a Phablet does has always been clear but the margin of difference between their functionality is narrowing as we speak. Earlier, tablets were closer to laptops and were used for entertainment purposes or for business purposes but now various companies are introducing the option of voice calling and phone calling on them. This really makes it hard to differentiate between the different segment of gadgets and thus allows us to separate them only on the basis of their screen sizes. Karbonn A34 is a tablet that works on the same line and has the voice calling function along with the phone calling functionality as well. The device is almost a scaled down version of Karbonn A37 and has a 7 inch screen that is powered by the TFT capacitive technology. The resolution offered by the device is same as most of the other Karbonn devices offer and thus the quality of display is no better.
The design is subtle and not too flashy but at the same time appealing. Other specs of the device include a 2 megapixels camera that has the ability to click pictures with good resolution while a secondary camera is also available that makes sure that the user can make video calls and talk to his or her friends located at a distant location over the web. Videos can also be shot while the internal memory is 6GB in totality with 4GB provided as default and another 2GB provided for user's use. A microSD card slot is also provided for further memory expansion up to 32GB. The device runs on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich, which is one of the more disappointing parts about the device as Android Jelly Bean 4.1 should have been there when already Android Jelly Bean 4.2 is available.
This puts the device at a disadvantage against other tablets that are sure to offer Jelly Bean as their operating system. Karbonn A34 has the dual-SIM facility through which the user can keep two SIM cards in the device at the same time whereas the 3,000mAh standard lithium-ion battery makes sure that the user can operate on the device without worrying about the battery running out of gas. Data connectivity features are plenty with the device including the Wi-Fi, EDGE and Bluetooth facility while multimedia features comprise of the music player and the video player. The hardware is well looked after with the 1GHz single-core processor although the lack of dual-core is likely to cause a problem as the RAM is also 512MB, which also a leaves a lot to be desired for. The device is also compatible with the 3G technology via dongle feature.
User Interface and UI functionality
Karbonn A34 has a 7 inch screen that gives a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels. The quality of display is really not what one would call spectacular but a compromise a device has to make for making the tablet economical.
Karbonn A34 has a music player that lets the user listen the desired musical tracks that can be heard through the loudspeakers and through the earphones. The video player can be used for watching videos that are compatible with multiple formats.
Pictures and Video quality
Karbonn A34 has a 2 megapixels camera like most Karbonn tablets and allows the user to click pictures at a resolution of 1600 by 1200 pixels. The VGA secondary camera can be used for communicating with friends and family members via video calls.
Karbonn A34 has the EDGE connectivity for using the web whereas the Wi-Fi facility can also be used for visiting the desired web sites including Facebook and Twitter. The user can also download desired data including songs, games, images and videos.
Internal and External Memory
Karbonn A34 has a 4GB internal memory while another 2GB is also provided for the user's use. The user can also stretch the external memory of the device up to 32GB thereby keeping a huge collection of data including music files, images, videos and games. The RAM is 512MB, which is not a good sign especially with the processor being single-core.
Applications and Gaming
Karbonn A34 has loads of games and apps courtesy Android Ice cream sandwich operating system. The user can further download more from the web as and when required.
Karbonn A34 is backed by the standard lithium-ion battery of 3,000mAh, which is pretty decent and probably a norm for most Karbonn tablets. The user can then operate on the device for longer hours with being interrupted.
Karbonn A34 has the EDGE facility to access the web while Wi-Fi is also available. The USB port gives the user facility to connect with other device, either to charge the device or exchange data with other devices. The Bluetooth facility is also available for connecting the device with other devices and transferring data to that device or receive data from it where the data exchanged may include music file, games, images and videos.
Karbonn A34 when compared to Micromax Funbook Talk P360 has the same screen size with both the devices featuring a 7 inch display. Micromax Funbook Talk P360 has the Wi-Fi hot spot facility, which Karbonn A34 does not but the camera strength is same for both the devices with a 2 megapixels primary camera and a VGA secondary camera. Micromax Funbook Talk P360 has a 1GB RAM as compared to 512MB offered by Karbonn A34 while the operating system is also superior with Micromax Funbook Talk P360 as it runs on the Android Jelly Bean as compared to Android Ice Cream Sandwich offered by Karbonn A34.
