Overall Review

As Lenovo ventures into the smartphone world, we see plenty of companies on the verge of changing their core competencies from one to another. A very renowned brand by the name of Apple also had a similar story and today, they are one of the top players in the history of smartphones. There are companies like Celkon changing from manufacturing computer accessories to mobile phones and Lenovo too understands that the need of the hour is to change and evolve. Lenovo A1000 is a 7-inch TFT capacitive touch screen tablet that has a length of 199mm, a height of 121mm, and a thickness of 10.7mm. A heavy gadget is what the Lenovo A1000 is with 340grams to its name. The pixel density of the display is rather less with 170ppi although the resolution is somewhere in the mid range with 600 by 1024 pixels. The device is available in the colors of Black and White and looks pretty elegant, which should not come as a surprise for a company having a long experience of creating laptops and desktops. Multimedia applications are healthy with the music player allowing the user to hear music through the stereo speakers or through the Dolby Digital plus sound enhancement. The video player is supported by the formats MP4, H.264, and H.263 player. More music along with videos can be downloaded from the web with the help of the HTML browser and Wi-Fi facility. Wi-Fi hot spot is also present in the device as a hub to connect other devices to the web. Android jelly Bean as an operating system is fantastic and gives the user access to the latest games and applications like WhatsApp or Temple Run.   The software platform is further upgradable to the Android Jelly Bean 4.2, which is a good sign for those users who plan to keep the device for a while. There is a secondary camera at the front end of the device that works with VGA quality and is used more for making video calls as compared to clicking portrait like pictures. RAM is of 1GB that along with the dual core processor sets the theme for the hardware of the tablet. The processor clocks at 1.2GHz and works with the MTK 8317 chipset. The device has two versions based on the internal memory with 4GB and 16GB being its variants wherein, both the versions receive a 32GB microSD card slot for further enhancement of memory. Lenovo chose to stick with the two basic colors of Black and White, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The standard lithium-ion battery of 3500mAh is an honest battery backup that does deliver with a standby time of up 336hours.

User Interface and UI functionality

Lenovo A1000 is a nice and clean looking slate or Tablet that comes with 7-inch display running on a 600 by 1024 pixels and a modest pixel density of 170ppi. So, it is apparent from the specifications that this is not the most ideal combination for the display but the screen is actually reflection free and is great to pay games or watch videos.

Multimedia features

Lenovo A1000 has a music and video player that is not much when it comes to the entertainment. Loudspeakers are decisively weak but earphones work well as far as sound bass and overall quality are concerned. Formats supported by the device include MP3, WAV, WMA, and AAC player for the audio player while the video player works with MP4, H.264, and H.263 player.

Pictures and Video quality

Lenovo A1000 has a humble VGA camera at the front end of the tablet that does a decent job for video calls and web chats but is simply not good enough for clicking images that could be hung on the wall as portraits. Video quality is again not much to brag about.

Internet support

Lenovo A1000 has speedy web connectivity, for Lenovo does have a solid foundation with their desktop and Laptop series to inject in here. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spot work well with the device where the latter allows the device to act as a substitute for a server, and thus, ensure that other devices can connect through it to the web. The tablet relies on HTML browser as its default browser but the lack of version 5.0 is a worrying sign.

Internal and External Memory

Lenovo A1000 has two memory variations including 4GB and 16GB but in the longer run, it should not make a difference for a microSD card slot of 32GB has been provided to both of them. Tons of data as a result, is collectable including songs, games, images, and videos. Even movies can be downloaded onto the gadget. 1GB RAM is adequate for conducting multiple operations with the device or using multimedia applications at a reasonable speed.

Applications and Gaming

Lenovo A1000 is not blessed with a great deal of games although the number of apps is in sufficient number. But with Android Jelly Bean as the software protégé, the user can download a great number of the same without much fuss.

Battery Backup

Lenovo A1000 yields a vigorous standby time of up to 336hours while the multimedia usage time is lengthened up to 8hours. This can be attributed to the worthy 3500mAh standard lithium-ion battery which is non-removable.

Connectivity Offered

Lenovo A1000 provides features like USB port On the go, microUSB port and Bluetooth version 3.0 for data exchange with foreign gadgets. Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi hot spot are ideal means to access the web for surfing or checking mails.

Both Lenovo A1000 and Google Nexus 7 have a 7-inch display but the latter of the two is more effective in terms of pixel density and resolution. Both the tablets run on the Android Jelly Bean operating system although Google Nexus 7 has a slightly higher sub-version of the same. The standard lithium-ion battery of 3500mAh powers Lenovo A1000 while Google Nexus 7 runs on a much more powerful 4325mAh standard lithium-ion.
