Expert Review of Micromax Funbook Alpha P250 Tablet
As the smartphone market has exploded on to the scene, in parallel another market was just waiting to be explored. Android has just rejuvenated the competition in the tablet segments and now we have budget tablets, and shorter tablets and a little larger sized tablets and tablets divided on the basis of memory and what not. Lot of tier 2 and tier 3 companies are cashing in on the same and Micromax is no different. Micromax Funbook Alpha is a toned down version of Funbook and is an attempt by the company to give the customers a stripped down version of all the features that the high profile companies offer. But the device does not actually deliver the same with full value. Let us look at these features step by step. Micromax Funbook Alpha has a 7 inch screen with a screen resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, which is nothing out of this world but still decent enough. The screen swapping is okay but not the smoothest you will find. The processor is 1GHz Cortex A8 with dual Mali GPU but again, is not that quick. The speed, in fact, is slow at certain times, which is not a good sign if one is looking to access web and play games and listen to songs at the same time. So multitasking is not ideal with this device. The camera department leaves a lot to be desired for with a VGA front camera but the rear camera is absent from the same. The device runs on the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, which is a good thing even though it is not Jelly Bean, the version is still not the oldest you will find. Data connectivity features lack the GPRS and EDGE facility but there is Wi-Fi support with Bluetooth and USB port, which one would expect from every gadget these days. What the device does not provide is the HDMI port, which is a drawback. But what actually works in favour of the device is its low price, its slim design, which makes it comfortable for the user to hold it in their hands along with the HD videos playback support it provides. The device is available in the color of grey and comes powered by the standard lithium ion battery of 2,800 mAh, which gives a low operating time on Wi-Fi with only 4 hours. All-in-all the device is good as long as your expectations and your budget is low.
User Interface and UI functionality
Micromax Funbook Alpha offers a 7 inch TFT capacitive touchscreen that works at a resolution of 480 by 800 pixels along with a pixel density of 133ppi.
Micromax Funbook Alpha comes with a music player and a video player where the music player allows the user to access all the popular musical tracks that can be heard through the loudspeakers or through the earphones that can be attached to the device with the help of a 3.5mm jack. On one hand, the video player lets the user watch and enjoy videos in high definition in the formats - DivX, XviD, MP4, WMV and H.264 player. The music player, on the other hand supports the formats - MP3, WAV, WMA, AAC and Flac player.
Pictures and Video quality
Micromax Funbook Alpha has a 0.3 megapixels front camera of VGA quality but the lack of a rear camera is a serious liability.
Micromax Funbook Alpha has the Wi-Fi facility that makes sure that the user can access the web and download the desired data including music files, games, images and videos. All the popular social networking sites can also be accessed or even mails can be checked.
Internal and External Memory
Micromax Funbook Alpha has a 4GB storage capacity for data storage. The user can expand the external memory in case the internal memory is not enough up to 32GB with the help of a microSD card slot. The 512MB RAM is again, for us, a little short of what would have been ideal. Another 512MB would have done wonders for the speed of the gadget.
Applications and Gaming
Micromax Funbook Alpha has many games and apps that are preinstalled in the device. The Android world of apps also gives the user plenty of options to choose from.
Micromax Funbook Alpha runs on the standard lithium ion battery of 2,800 mAh, which is not the best power back up around for a tablet. The user can still shield out a 4 hour Wi-Fi operating time, which is far from what is desired from the user.
Micromax Funbook Alpha has a USB port that makes sure that the user can connect with any device that supports the USB port via USB cable. There is no HDMI port but there is the Wi-Fi facility.
Micromax Funbook Alpha when compared to Micromax Funbook Infinity has lots of similar features like the screen size with 7 inches display for both the gadgets along with the resolution offered by both the devices. The internal storage capacity along with the RAM capacity of 512MB is same for both the devices. Where Micromax Funbook Alpha falls short in front of Micromax Funbook Infinity is the camera department with the former featuring a front camera only of VGA quality, Micromax Funbook Infinity has a front camera of VGA quality along with a rear camera of 2 megapixels. Both the devices are backed by the Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system but the processing capability is more with Micromax Funbook Infinity with a 1.2GHz processor as compared to Micromax Funbook Alpha's 1GHz processor. The battery strength is another department where Micromax Funbook Infinity triumph's with a 4,000 mAh standard lithium ion battery as compared to Micromax Funbook Alpha's 2,800 mAh battery.
