Expert Review of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 T311 White
Samsung is a South Korean multinational company, which is the world's largest information technology company by revenue since 2009. With its wide range of products and consistent quality, it has reached nearly 88 countries, covering nearly millions of clients. Although in the market, the Samsung Galaxy Note spree is going strong, the company advances further and launches its Galaxy Tab 3 series, which includes Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, and Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, which are all-set to give a tough competition to the prevalent Android tablets. The '3' in the name represents that this tablet is the third generation of Galaxy Tab devices and the number after '3' denotes the tablet's screen size. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is a very solid tablet offering an 8inches touch screen with multi-touch functionality. For alerts and notifications, this tab can be put to vibration and MP3 ringtone mode. To enhance your audio experience, it is provided with a built-in speaker and an audio jack, so that you can connect your earphones/headphones with it. Almost all the features are provided in the tab that can keep you connected all the time. The 5MP camera allows you to click decent pictures and can enjoy video calling too with its front camera. Depending on the model chosen, this tab is available with 16GB and 32GB of internal memory, which can be further expanded via the microSD card provided. It is equipped with a large RAM that facilitates the data processing speed. Working on Android OS, v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), it renders Exynos 4212 as the chipset and a dual-core 1.5GHz processor.
User Interface and UI functionality
This tablet offers a TFT capacitive touch screen with 16M colours, a screen resolution of 800 x 1280pixels and a pixel density of ~ 189 pixels per inch. This screen resolution is lower than the Amazon Kindle Fire HD 8.9 and accordingly, the price of the tab is lower than the latter one. The display is large enough to comfortably read e-books or surf webpages, watch videos or movies, and play games. The touch is very smooth and highly responsive, and the test results for display showed a contrast ratio of 989, which is quite nominal. Only downside of the design for some may be its plastic back, which is very shining and looks sleek instead of the texturized back of Nexus 7 that looks more elegant. The user interface is very easy to follow and the menus are self-explanatory.
For video, this tab supports file types of MP4, H.264, DivX and WMV and fir audio, the files supported are MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WAV, and WMA. To enhance your audio experience, it is equipped with a built-in loudspeaker with stereo speakers and a 3.5mm audio jack with Dolby Surround sound enhancement so that you can enjoy your collection through your earphones too. The Dolby Surround sound enhancement provides 6.1 or 7.1 channels over any earphone, thus giving you an extreme feel of your music. With such terrific sound and a larger screen, watching movies, videos or playing games is engrossing and more enjoyable. In addition, it also supports full HD (1080p) video playback. You can use DLNA with supported HDTVs or an HML adapter to duplicate your screen. The test results for loudspeaker were Voice 71dB, Noise 66dB and Ring 75dB and the tests for audio quality were Noise -91.4dB and Crosstalk -91.0dB.
Pictures and Video quality
You can take decent pictures with its 5 megapixel rear camera that provides a resolution of 2660 x 1920pixels. In addition, you can also enjoy clear video calling with its 1.3 megapixel front camera. This is where it gets an edge for Kindle Fire HD does not have a camera at all, and the Nexus 7 has only a front-facing camera. The rear camera offers many common camera features like autofocus, LED flash, geo-tagging, touch focus, face detection, and 720p video recording at 30fps.
One model is equipped with the Wi-Fi facility and the other offers 3G/LTE option for global connectivity. This can be considered as a major drawback that these two connectivity options are offered separately at this price point. Nevertheless, it can act as a Wi-Fi hotspot and as a Wi-Fi Direct, which means you can share your Wi-Fi network on other Wi-Fi enabled devices as well.
Internal and External Memory
It is provided with 1.5GB RAM memory that is very good and ensures a faster processing speed. A large amount of files can be stored with its 16GB or 32GB of internal memory. The price of the model will depend on the model chosen. If, by chance, your data happens to exceed this storage capacity, you need not worry, as there is provision of a micro SD that is expandable up to 64GB.
Applications and Gaming
Some preloaded applications and features are accelerometer, compass, proximity sensor (3G/LTE models only), threaded view of text messages, MMS, Email, Push Email, IM, HTML5 enabled browser, A-GPS support, GLONASS, SNS integration, TV-out, organizer, image/video editor, document viewer, Google Search, Maps, Gmail, YouTube, Calendar, Google Talk, Picasa, Voice memo/dial and predictive text input. There are also some preloaded Samsung apps available with Music Hub 3.2, Readers Hub 2.0, Game Hub 2.0, Chat ON, Active Sync, and B-to-B Compatibility: ODE, EAS, MDM, and VPN.
Working on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2, the device is provided with a 4450mAh, non-removable battery that delivers a talk time up to 11hours and a stand by time up to 96hours. But, it is spotted that with screen brightness of 75%, playing a video in a continuous loop with Wi-Fi in the background, this tablet lasted only for 5hours in comparison to the Kindle Fire HD, which lasted for 9hours and iPad mini and Nexus 7 which lasted for more than 10hours. So if you are a person, who needs a tablet when you are on a move, do keep this point in your mind.
For global connectivity you are offered with two models, one the Wi-Fi model and other, the 3G/LTE model and for local connectivity, it is equipped with USB v2.0, micro USB (MHL), Bluetooth v4.0 and infrared port. As mentioned above, you can stay connected with your friends and family with a clear and a better video calling option with its 1.3MP front camera.
Samsung has been giving a tough competition in the electronics market and the top rivals of this tab are Nexus 7 and iPad mini and its own sibling Galaxy Note 8.0. Every gadget has one or two unique features and it all depends on your needs and your budget.

Recently a new edition has been added to its hugely popular Tab series, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0. This device is poised to carry forward the legacy of its predecessors. This Tab is quite compact at 209.8 x 123.8 x 7.4mm and weighs about 314gm, which is not very bulky should we compare it with its rivals. This slim Tablet resembles very closely with its cousin the Samsung Galaxy S4, in style and panache. The body of Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is made of glazed plastic which is quite sturdy. The company is releasing three variants of this device, the Wi-Fi only, 3G, and LTE models wherein, all of them render full voice and data support. This new entrant has an 8-inch LCD capacitive touch screen with 800 x 1280pixel resolution that appears quite responsive, moreover, it supports 16M – colours that make the images vibrant and bold. But we sorely miss the super AMOLED screen of its flagship S4 phone. The front panel has the usual navigation control keys that is, back, menu, and home embossed on it.
Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 comes out of the box housing Android v4.2.2 Jelly Bean OS with an overlay of the company’s TouchWiz customization software. This device runs on 1.5GHz dual-core cortex-A9 CPU coupled with Mali-400MP GPU Exynos 4212 dual chipset processor with 2GB of RAM, which significantly improves the multi-tasking capability of this device. Though sometimes, we find that the screen gets a bit unresponsive when we are playing a resource hogging game but overall, its processor’s performance is quite decent. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 has a 5MP auto focus camera with face detection software which takes decent images but hits the bummer while taking videos, for it captures videos only in 720p HD at 30fps. A 1.3-megapixel secondary video call camera adorns the front of this device that dons ambient light sensor and is the same RGB sensor found in Note II, the one that is capable of detecting the full spectrum of the ambient light rather than just the green channel. This results in improved performance under some types of artificial lightening. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 comes with 16 / 32GB of internal storage, which can be expanded through a microSD card. This device offers a lot of connectivity options like dual band Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n, infrared port, stereo Bluetooth v4.0, micro USB port with USB host, and TVout (1080p) support. This device has digital compass and supports GPS, AGPS, and GLONASS so that a person never gets lost in a new city. For smooth functioning, many sensors have been incorporated in the device like the accelerometer, gyroscope, and proximity sensor. Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 8.0 is powered by a 4450mAH battery which can last over a day with moderate usage. This device has several pre-installed apps like document editor & file manager, Smartstay, Reading mode, Game play, and multi window respectively. There are few omissions though, like the lack of FM radio and NFC support. In all fairness, Samsung has tried to provide a good-looking Tablet with lot of features at a low price point.
