Canon EOS 1000D DSLR Kit EF-S18-55mm Black - Expert Reviews
Canon EOS 1000D one of the key players, probably the most popular one indeed from the EOS line of Canon SLRs is commonly known as Digital Rebel XS in North America, Why? The camera has made a huge impact on the global camera market. The camera is a true successor of EOS 400D which was called Rebel XTi and is just positioned below Canon EOS 450D or Rebel XSi. Canon EOS 1000D shares several key specifications with its predecessor. It has the same 10.1 Megapixel resolution using a CMOS sensor, the same 3fps continuous shooting rate for JPEG images and the same sized 2.5in 230k pixel screen round the back although a significant difference is that it’s now brighter and sports a wider viewing angle. So far so similar, but Canon has of course made a number of changes. Basically Canon EOS 1000D is a digital SLR camera and is powered by DIGIC III image processor. The camera has 10.1 megapixel high-sensitivity, high-resolution, single-plate CMOS Sensor. The sensor has dimension of 22.2 x 14.8 mm and supports aspect ratio of 2:3. The 2.5-inch TFT colour liquid-crystal monitor that covers the rear has resolution of 230,000 dot pixels. The camera supports SD card and SDHC card external memory. This EOS camera comes with LP-E5 battery that is capable of taking 600 shots through Viewfinder and 200 shots in Live View shooting.
Design and Build Quality
Canon EOS 1000D may well be the lightest entry level DSLR till date at around 450 gms without battery. It is a good 60 gms ligther that its predecessor. XTi. Measuring 126x98x62mm it is 1mm narrower, 4mm taller and 2mm thinner than the 400D / XTi, and identical to the recent 450D / XSi other than being 3mm narrower. . The build quality is roughly the same on all three models – like most budget DSLRs, they employ lightweight plastic shells, but the construction and assembly feels smooth and solid. The grips are also essentially the same shape, although there are some differences in the finish. Canon 1000D / XS shares the same plain coating as the 400D / XTi on the front side, although is lacking any textured surface for your thumb on the rear. The buttons that are placed on the rear of the camera are relatively bigger than the normal ones. The bigger buttons and icons may be designed to draw attention of the customers tuning into the SLR world for the first time with an entry level DSLR. The controls are easy to identify and press, especially when you are wearing a glove.
Focus and Face Detection
Canon EOS 1000D has a 7 point auto focus system which shares pretty much the same sensor arrangement much like the EOS 350D. This may come to many camera professionals as a sorrow as it is like a step down from the 9 point better and advanced Auto Focus system portrayed earlier in Canon 400D. According to Canon, the system is not exactly the same as 7 points in the predecessors. The claims are made that the predictive Auto Focus system is same as 400D. The camera may not have a frame coverage of a 9 point system but it remains much more sophisticated and flexible than the basic 3-point AF systems found in Nikon and Olympus entry-level DSLRs. Ultimately while it is disappointing to see a successor’s specifications being downgraded, it only really bothers enthusiasts or owners of the previous model. There is also the usual three AF modes: One Shot for use with still subjects, AI Servo for moving subjects, or AI Focus which lets the camera decide between the two.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Canon EOS 1000D enjoys an EF lens mount and is fully compatible with both Canon EF and EF-S lenses. Thanks to its APS-C sensor size, all lenses effectively have their field of view reduced by 1.6 times. The EOS 1000D is available in the typical kit with Canon’s EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS lens. This lens may have the same 29-88mm equivalent focal range as the kit model supplied with its predecessor, but now features Image Stabilisation which crucially allows Canon to compete against other stabilised DSLR kits. The build quality is ok for a budget bundle, but like most kit lenses, there’s not much of a manual focusing ring to speak of, and both it and the end element rotate while focusing which is annoying for users of polarising filters.
Screen and Menus
Canon EOS 1000D’s rear is well equipped with a small but decent 2.5 inch 230k pixel monitor which may share the same size and resolution as its predecessor, the 400D but it’s actually a different screen. It now features an impressive four LED backlighting system which makes it 40% brighter and the viewing angle has also been improved significantly. One can easily confirm both the wider viewing angle and increase in brightness. Image details and fonts look crisper on the new model, although at 2.5in it’s now one of the smaller screens found on 2008 DSLRs. Live View is the key new feature on Canon 1000D over its predecessor, and in use it’s essentially the same as the 450D.
What really powers the camera is the LP-E5 X1 battery pack, which is capable of taking almost 300 images before a mandatory charging. This may be roughly the same physical size as the NB-2LH in the earlier Canon EOS 400D, but packs in around 50% more charge: 1080mAh to its predecessor’s 720mAh. The pack also features sealed electrical contacts to better protect against accidental fire.
Video Mode is not available in Canon EOS 1000D.
The Canon EOS 1000D possesses the same 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor which is Canon’s forte as its predecessor, Canon EOS 400D. This measures 22.2x14.8mm and generates 3:2 aspect ratio images with a maximum resolution of 3888x2592 pixels. There’s the choice of two lower resolutions, and all three sizes can be recorded with either Fine or Normal JPEG compression. Alternatively you can record RAW files either with or without a Large Fine JPEG.
