Canon EOS 100D DSLR Kit EF-S18-55mm IS Black - Expert Reviews
Canon is possibly the most sought after and trusted brand, ask professionals and enthusiasts alike, the answer is bound to be the same. Canon rules the hearts of camera consumers across the globe, and it is because of the intelligent and innovative products it offers to us from time to time. One such product is the recently launched Canon EOS 100D, which is the company's newest entry-level weapon and as per Canon's claims, is the smallest and the most featherweight model embedded with APS-C sensor till date. Arguably bound to succeed Canon EOS 100D Kit (EF S18-55 IS STM) and most definitely produced in response to the changing trend and growing popularity of mirror-less cameras, given that Canon has its own mirror-less option in the form of Canon EOS M. The Canon EOS 100D is truly a star, with the body possibly shrunk in every possible dimensions, it still manages to stylize itself in the traditional DSLR way and has not compressed any sort of composition, control or connectivity. The device features a decent 3-inch screen that has an optical viewfinder with 95% coverage and a 0.87x optical magnification, and all this in addition to the sensor to switch the screen off when it is turning over to the optical viewfinder.
There are some excellent touch controls on Canon EOS 100D which were earlier seen on Canon EOS 650D, and then there is also more or less quite the same type of ergonomics, which we saw earlier including a dedicated ISO button. While all of this is said, the connectivity of the device includes a remote socket, a 3.5mm microphone jack and mini HDMI port. In the arsenal, the device keeps its same 18megapixel resolution that Canon has made a custom for APS-C models for the last few months, but the sensor is new and features an updated hybrid AF system. In the footsteps of Canon EOS 650D and Canon EOS M before it, phase-detect AF, points to assist focusing in Live View and movies have been used, and it covers like 80% of the frame. Other specifications included in this device are 4fps continuous shooting, Full HD 1080p video recording at 24, 25 and 30fps, but there is a certain unavailability of in built Wi-Fi and GPS.
Design and Build Quality
A feature that strikes above all for Canon EOS 100D is definitely its miniature size. Being a DSLR, a size of 117mm x 91mm x 69.4mm is more than something to be astounded of, and the weight of 407grams (when fitted with a battery) makes it comfortably the smallest and the lightest APS-C DSLR till date. To make it clear about the variation, the smallest entry level devices like the Canon EOS 1100D measured 130mm x 100mm x 77.9mm and weighed 495gm when embedded with a battery, and while Canon EOS 700D came out of the curtain approximately around the same time as the 100D, it measures 133mm x 100mm x 78.8mm and weighed 580gms. So what we draw out of this is that Canon EOS 100D is at least one centimeter smaller in every dimension than the smallest of Canon's earlier DSLRs, and at least 88gms lighter. So, basically Canon EOS 100D is the personification of the impressive engineering effort put up by Canon, especially when you consider shockingly great usability and handling, which has not been compromised at all. So, it is really important to keep this in mind, when you take into account the overall portability of this device and the ease of carrying.
Focus and Face Detection
Canon EOS 100D is not really a frontrunner here, as it flaunts the same 9 point AF system which was earlier spotted on a single cross type sensor as on the Canon EOS 1100D before this. This is most definitely a modest but more or less a predictable one coming from an entry level DSLR, but more excitingly, the device features Canon's latest hybrid AF system for Live View and movie shooting purposes. Like the original part of it that made its debut back when Canon EOS M or Canon EOS 650D was launched.
Lens and Image Stabilization
As its forte, it is obvious that the Canon EOS 100D features a standard EF lens mounted with orthodox capacities with the entire array of lenses including the EF-S lenses designed especially for APS-C sensors. This is probably the single most important benefit of Canon EOS 100D over the mirror-less models, which include Canon's very own EOS-M and the access to more than 80 lenses swooping on whole of the Canon lens catalogue without the need of any sort of adapter or compromised AF performance. With the introduction of an APS-C sensor, with effective field of view comes down drastically by 1.6 times, and hence a standard 18-55mm kit zoom would only deliver field of view with an improved equivalent of 29-88mm on a full-frame DSLR. Along with Canon EOS 100D, a new lens kit was announced, which is the EF-S 18-55mm f3.5-5.6 IS STM. The focal length and focal ratio of this device remains the same as the previous kit lens, and the same happens with the presence of new optical Image Stabilization, the new feature here however, is the Stepper Motor focusing, which is called STM or short.
Screen and Menus
The screen on Canon EOS 100D measures 3inches which covers almost the entire rear with a image pixel resolution of 3:2 aspect ratio, which matches the shape of all the images combined and hence, unlike all the Nikon DSLRs, the screen is filled with playback and Live View. The screen on the device is also touch-sensitive and allows you to tap to focus and also control a capable interface, prior to this, was only seen on Canon EOS 650D. The setting and menu can entirely be controlled by touch if desired, unlike many other touch-screen interfaces that till now rely on some key presses. It is overwhelming to see Canon live up to its reputation and take Panasonic down in terms of control and touch.
Not really convincing in this department, Canon EOS 100D employs exactly the same LP-E12 battery pack which was flaunted on Canon EOS M before this, and accommodates the SD memory card in the same compartment rather than providing a different compartment for SD altogether. However, this happened to be of minimal disadvantage and did not affect the performance much. Only disadvantage being, it prevents the changing of cards when mounted on a tripod. The smaller battery also understandably reduces the number of shots per charge and according to CIPA, this device is capable of capturing 380 shots as opposed to the 440 flaunted on Canon EOS 700D, but then again, this is not that big a difference either. You may also be interesting in knowing that Panasonic G6 can manage only 340 shots per charge and it is a 100% Live View system, while Canon EOS 100D is not, and through a viewfinder. As most of the entry-level devices, there is no optional battery provided for Canon EOS 100D, but then neither is it provided for most of the mirrorless cameras around.
Unsurprisingly, the movie making capabilities of this device are top notch and you can film movies at 1080p Full HD at 24, 25 or 30fps, 720p at 50 or 60fps, or VGA at 25 or 30fps. The maximum duration that you can shoot in a single charge is 29 minutes and 59 seconds with the maximum limit extending to a file size of 4GB. What you are looking here is 330MB per minute of HD movie, with 720p consuming as much space as 1080p because it is available in high frame rates, so that the 4GB limit is reached only after 12 minutes, regardless of what the setting is.
Canon keeps on its 18megapixel resolution of previous APS-C DSLRs that no doubt comes to everyone as a disappointment, especially to those who always change the numbers.
