Canon IXUS 130 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
One of the biggest franchises in the Photography world, Canon redefines elegance in image capturing devices with its sleek and stylish IXUS range. Insides of the range vary product to product but what doesn’t change is style that they exhibit, and one of the front runners in this series both in terms of functioning and style is Canon IXUS 130 Point & Shoot. The lens of the Canon IXUS 130 is made by integrating 6 elements into 5 groups. The focal length of 5mm to 20mm and f number of 2.8-5.9 give proper definition to the image. The camera has a TTL type autofocus which can be set up to a 9 point or a face detection mode or to centre focusing. The Canon IXUS 130 also has a selectable AF lock and comes with a closest focusing distance of as close as 3cm! With an AE lock and exposure metering with compensation of +/- 2 EV in 1/3 stop increments, the Canon IXUS 130 boasts of an enhanced i-Contrast for automatic dynamic range correction and ISO of 80-1600. The camera has TTL type of white balance and an internal flash which can be set to auto, manual, slow synchro and can even be switched off. The flash also allows face detection flash exposure compensation to focus on one recognized face. Along with this the camera boasts of a Canon High Power HF-DC1 external flash. The PureColor II G LCD monitor of the camera with 230000 dots measures 6.9cm and has brightness levels adjustable to one of five levels. It also allows in camera red eye reduction. The monitor measures 92.2mm x 56.1mm x 17.8mm with the camera weighing only 133 grams making it fit for pockets! The camera sports scene detection and motion detection technology and allows shooting in different modes with photo effects and allows adding colors to the images. In the continuous shooting mode, it gives 0.7shots per sec and allows HD movie recording in 1280x720p at 30fps!
Design and Build Quality
Canon IXUS 130 comes in with the dimensions measuring 92.2mm x 56.1mm x 17.8mm and weighs about 133 g, isn’t that compact or what? But the device has got much more to its build and design than just being a regular compact camera, it contains really well crafted rounded edges and lacks the traditional sharp edges through which the device slips very easily and comfortably in just about any pocket. Images of this device won’t do it any sort of justice because to feel its beauty you really need to acquire one of these. It also feels great in your hands, with a smooth finish that's almost bereft of protrusions or anything to catch your fingers on. The controls on the rear are essentially unchanged from the older model, with the same button layout and three-way mode switch. On the top you'll find a small circular power button and silver shutter release, but Canon has changed the rotary zoom rocker that prevailed earlier to a tiny joystick lever. In the upper right corner of the rear surface you'll find the same flap as before, hiding the combined USB / AV output and Mini HDMI port; USB and AV cables are supplied, but as usual you'll need to provide your own HDMI cable.
Focus and Face Detection
Canon IXUS 130 offers two main auto-focusing options: Face AiAF and Centre. The default Face AiAF routinely switches between face detection when a human subject is in the frame and a standard nine-area system for other subjects. It works seamlessly in practice, and like other Canon compacts employing DIGIC 4 processors, the face detection can hang-onto most subjects as they move across the frame or turn to full profile.
Lens and Image Stabilization
Talking about the lens that stands tall on Canon IXUS 130, the device is capable of 4x optical zoom(which is really average) equivalent to 28-112mm. The good part however is that this is not only broader than the basic 3x (33-100mm equivalent) range of its predecessor, but starts a little wider as well as zooming a little longer. The device is still nowhere near the superzoom models like Canon IXUS SX210 IS but the vice versa, they are nowhere equally slim. Despite Canon choosing to drop the IS label from the IXUS brand, Canon IXUS 130 surely features Image Stabilisation.
Screen and Menus
For any regular device, the screen dimension of 2.7 inches is small, but for a super compact device, it is perfect, and still it is bigger than 2.5 inches of its predecessor, although both the devices share the same resolution of 230,000 dot pixels. But the bigger screen has come with a cost of losing the optical viewfinder which was featured in its predecessor. Optical viewfinder is definitely useful alternative for composing in bright direct light or to squeeze a few extra shots out of a failing battery.
Canon IXUS 130 runs on the same NB-4L rechargeable Lithium Ion battery pack that powers most of IXUS cameras. Claims are made that the battery is good to work for 230 shots under CIPA conditions in one go equivalent to 100 minutes of video recording in highest resolution; this is a slight improvement over 210 shots in Canon IXUS 100 IS.
With Canon IXUS 130, one can shoot movies at 320x240, 640x480 and finally at HD quality 720p at 1280x720 pixels at a frame rate of 30 frames per second which is now accompanied with Canon’s marked choice of applying the Color swap and color accent modes which can be used for special effects.
Canon IXUS 130 is well equipped with a 14.1 Megapixel CCD sensor which measures 1/ 2.3in and delivers 4:3 shaped images with a maximum resolution of 4320x3240 pixels. The device offers 4 lower resolutions as well as a cropped resolution of 16:9 which is used in laptops and PCs.
