Canon IXUS 240 HS Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

If there is one series of camera that totally leaves the customers awestruck by it design alone, and tempt the user to buy the device only on the basis of hardware and hardware alone, undoubtedly IXUS series comes to mind in an instant, one of the high-end Point and Shoot from this “posh” range of cameras is Canon IXUS 240 HS which features a 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor which is supported by Canon’s High-Speed system, definitely aimed to excel a great deal in dim-light conditions. All the features of this device are packed in an ultra-slim exterior housing in the front of which is a 5x optical zoom lens which is a 35 mmequivalent of 24-120mm. The zoom can be extended to 10x with ZoomPlus. To help take the sharpest pictures possible there is Intelligent IS. To support the process, a Smart Auto mode is provided in Canon IXUS 240 HS which allows the user to select from as many as 58 scenes. Face ID can register up to twelve family and friends faces, which are then automatically tagged. High-speed Burst can be used to confine fast moving objects. And now the limelight feature, quite unthinkable if you rewind the time a year back, Canon IXUS 240 HS features Wi-Fi. Yes!! Wi-Fi connection in a camera, now the device can be connected to other devices with ease, quite a utility, right?! Also videos can be recorded in Full HD 1980 x 1080 or 1080p at 24 frames per second alongside stereo sound and optical zoom as well as an Intelligent IS. Canon IXUS 240 HS can also be connected via a HDMI cable to a HD TV. Also there are options for Super Slow Motion Movies.

Design and Build Quality

Each and every one of IXUS products, somehow “demands” attention, which they get because the styling of the device is spectacular. When it comes to Canon IXUS 240 HS the device somehow feels a little more rectangular than other IXUS products. Being barely larger than a Debit Card, the camera slides in easily into your pocket and is tremendously easy to handle. One look at the exact dimensions of this product tell the dimensions to be 93.5mm x 56.8mm x 20.8m with a weight of 145 gms. The body is made from aluminium hence it is solid yet lightweight with it when held in the palm. Canon IXUS 240 HS comes in a major variety of colors such as Silver, Purple, Blue and Pink. It follows other High sensitivity models like Canon IXUS 220HS, Canon IXUS 310 HS and obviously, the ever popular Canon IXUS 115 HS which had 12.1 megapixel and 4x optical zoom to offer. Well, Canon IXUS 240 HS is better in both the aspect, offering a focal range stretching from 24mm to 120mm in 35mm equivalent terms. As far as the main features go then, the Canon IXUS 240 HS is pretty much your standard Point and Shoot device.

Focus and Face Detection

When it comes to Manual and Auto modes, without a doubt, Canon is one step too ahead of others, the major problem arises when the faces are at a significant distance from the device, in other devices reviewed the camera turns to partial profile, but somehow Canon IXUS 240 HS manages to come up top, although the device struggles just a little bit in dim light conditions.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon IXUS 240 HS comes embedded with a 5x optical zoom lens, which then powers the 16.1 megapixel CMOS sensor. At the widest ratio, this lens becomes equivalent toa 24mm lens in 35mm speak. On the right hand side of Canon IXUS 240 HS’s glossy body there is a mini – HDMI port and a sigh of relief as there is a standard USB socket. At the bottom of this device as usual, are the battery hiding spots and for SD/SDHC/SDXC card; there's no user accessible internal memory.

Screen and Menus

Most of the rear of Canon IXUS 240 HS is covered almost entirely by the huge 3.2 inch resistive touchscreen which is mounted on a miniature body and looks elegant. The screen fancies an average pixel count of 461,000. Anyhow, despite having a touchscreen, the physical buttons are not entirely flushed down the gutter. Some aspects, such as the always-present virtual buttons for video record and flash settings, work well enough. There's also the playback button to the bottom-right of the touchscreen that allows you to review images and videos without use of the lens mount.

Battery

The powerhouse of the device is the battery pack that it runs on, and Canon IXUS 240 HS runs on a power supply of Battery Pack NB-4L, Compact Power Adapter CA-DC10 Adapter Kit when used with DC Coupler DR-10. These are way better than the standard AA batteries and power up to give 440 shots in a single charge, although depending upon the battery quality this can go upto 600. This shooting range is equivalent to 50 minutes of HD recording.

Video Mode

With Canon IXUS 240 HS, there is a choice of shooting Full HD 1920x1080 pixels clips at 24fps or dropping down in resolution to HD 1280x720 and filming at a smoother frame rate of 30fps. Thankfully the optical zoom can also be utilized when recording, although it is much slower to move through its focal range. Despite the miniature dimensions of Canon IXUS 240 HS, it does sport an HDMI port for connecting the device to a flat Panel TV although HDMI cable does not come embedded in the box. This port is next to a joint port for AV and USB connectivity.

Sensors

Canon IXUS 240 HS runs on a 1/2.3 inch CMOS sensor that is able to work to 16.1 Megapixels, this is better than most of the high end IXUS point and shoot cameras from Canon.

Pros

Slim metal body

Wi-Fi enabled

Full 1080p HD movie recording

Excellent image quality and colour reproduction

Responsive touch screen

Good noise performance at higher ISO settings

Cons

Low battery life expectancy

Fairly expensive for a compact camera

No rubber grip

Camera is fine. Although detailing isn't great even though its 16MP camera. Touch screen is very slow and becomes irritating while trying to work quickly.
I haven't taken a print of the photos

Wi-fi useless for India?
by Sarat T on 2013-02-23

I think the camera is great. But the Wi-Fi features cannot be used in India. Not in the list of supported countries. I could not even get it to successfully connect to the computer locally on wi-fi.
