Canon PowerShot A1200 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

A slightly better version of Canon PowerShot A800, and frankly, the perfect low budget point and shoot camera from the multinational giant, Canon, Canon PowerShot A1200 is a 12.1 MP low budget device which features average 4x optical zoom and a 2.7 inch LCD screen. An unusual site on this device is that being a camera of today’s world, Canon PowerShot A1200 is equipped with an optical viewfinder which is a little odd but delightful. Another unorthodox feature in this device is that it sucks up power not from the conventional Lithium Ion batteries but from two AA batteries. Canon PowerShot is really a highly user friendly compact which brings forth all you can expect in an in-budget compact device, it is the second most primitive camera in the A series line up of devices, above only the earlier mentioned Canon PowerShot A1200 and also includes many additional features such as Live View Control and Creative filters. Impressively for the money, it can also shoot 720p HD video, but like the A800 below it, lacks any form of image stabilisation. So as such, if you are a money conscious buyer and you need the cheapest camera money can buy, smart money would be investing just a little more to get many exciting new features. Its nearest river Nikon L24, Nikon’s ideal budget device has even more resolution rising to 14 megapixels. That is really a great news if you want greater quality in reasonable price, but then Canon PowerShot has additional pros and cons over Nikon CoolPix L24 and other devices. What are they? Let’s find out.

Design and Build Quality

Available in silver or black, Canon PowerShot A1200, is not only substance, it definitely has a bit of style in it and is really very comfortable to handle and slides into the pocket very easily. Unlike the wedge shaped styling of the predecessor, Canon PowerShot A1200 has a bulging right side, inside which the twin AA batteries are housed. This looks quite trendy on its own, and provides a reasonable grip to your finger, and though this is definitely not the smallest of point and shoots from Canon, it is definitely well designed. The exact dimensions of Canon PowerShot A2200 measure 97.5 mm x 30.7 mm x 62.5 mm and can easily be kept into the featherweight category. Unlike A800, Canon PowerShot A1200 contains a mode dial which is located on the top panel, though it does not extend over the edge of it. The eight positions in mode dial are Program auto, Live Control View, (Smart) Auto, Easy, SCN, Creative Filters, Discrete mode and, Movie mode.

Focus and Face Detection

Compared to the disappointing show of Canon PowerShot A800 in this field, Canon PowerShot A1200 fancies a good nine area AiAF auto focusing, which is the default focus mode in most exposure modes. These additional AF areas on Canon CyberShot A1200 provide a definite advantage to the device when the subjects are more towards the edges rather than being in the centre. Digic 4 processor’s Face AiAF can tremendously recognise faces in the frame and can easily lock focus on them.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon PowerShot A1200 houses on it a 4x optical zoom lens which has a range of 5 - 20mm, or 28 - 112mm equivalent. Normally budget compacts typically have optical zooms which come with the range around 4x and this is a typical budget compact. Well, the maximum zoom of 134mm of Nikon Coolpix L24 may get you a little better zoom than Canon PowerShot A1200 with 112mm but it can definitely not get you close enough to get a proper distant view in the tightly framed shots. In both the cases, sadly you have to just rely on your feet to take you a little closer to the object.

Screen and Menus

Almost the entire rear of Canon PowerShot A1200 is covered by a 2.7 inch LCD screen which houses 230 thousand pixels. The screen is bright and definitely better than Canon PowerShot A800 but still it is a primitive screen with a plus point that it does not suffer from pixellated view.

Canon PowerShot A1200 relies completely on AA batteries for power, and two alkaline AA's are included in the box. The advantage of AA's is that you can easily replace them if they run out, say, while you're on holiday. With a proprietary Lithium Ion battery of the kind used in most compacts, unless you have the charger with you, you're out of luck. That said, many people prefer the convenience of a single battery/charger. Alkaline AAs you'll get 200 shots before the power runs out, which is on the low side comparatively speaking. Switch to NiMH rechargeables, though, and you can expect the batteries to last for 450 shots. If you turn off the LCD screen on Canon PowerShot A1200 and rely on the optical viewfinder to compose shots those figures increase to a whopping 650 and 1100 shots respectively. All of these numbers are achieved using the Camera Imaging Products Association's (CIPA) standard testing procedures.

Video Mode

One of the strongest points of Canon PowerShot A1200 is that it can shoot HD video at 1280 x 720 resolution (720p). That's right, HD quality video on a budget compact. You won't find many affordable point-and-shoot devices that can make that claim, indeed the best that most, including Canon PowerShot A800, Nikon COOLPIX L24 and Sony Cybershot W510, are able to offer is 640 x 480 pixels. This makes Canon PowerShot A 1200 an obvious choice for those looking for HD video on a budget, albiet not the only choice, as there's also the Panasonic Lumix S1.

12.1 megapixel sensor in Canon PowerShot A1200 produces images with a maximum size of 4000 x 3000 pixels at one of two compression settings, Normal and Fine. At the better quality fine setting image size is around 3MB. The ISO sensitivity ranges from 80 to 1600 with up to 6400 ISO automatically selected in Low Light Scene mode.

720p HD video.

28mm wide angle.

Live Control view and other fun modes.

Optical viewfinder.

No image stabilisation.

Poor high ISO performance.

No AV cable included for TV viewing.

Excellent Camera....
by Vardhan Bhatt on 2011-10-01

This is an excellent camera.... A must buy for beginners...

I had ordered it on 27th sept and on 1st of oct. It was at my doorstep..

Flipkart never compromise with its promise but the only error occured in my case this time was that I had ordered a "Black" camera and they sent me a "Silver"... Since I was in an urgency I had to accept the delivery......

The customer support was helpful and they promised to replace the order when I called back, but since I was in an urgency I told them I'm OKAY... "Since color has nothing to do with the performance of this camera which is excellent"....

I had got everything in my box as told with extra accessories like an 8 GB SDHC card alongwith a battery charger and carry case.....

The camera has excellent features of which the HD video is good....

Great Buy for the Price

Best Deal.... For every day photography
by Atul Vijay on 2012-03-10

I had been searching for a cost effective camera and my search ended here!... @ the a price of Rs 4360/-
The camera is really a marvel in its capabilities. It is loaded with various creative functions, as well as the P mode allows you to 've a decent amount of control over the photography. The camera is also ergonomically designed.
It also gives a combined zoom of 16x!.... Even though it lacks IS technology, it is counteracted with the 2 sec self timer option.
Its a wonderful performer for anyone who loves photography!!!

The software CD which comes along is of great utility, in organizing and managing the photos. It also has option to customize the camera!!! I Personalized the start up screen, sounds et all!!!

The battery backup is also great, thanks to the various power saving options and also the viewfinder.

I strongly recommend this camera for, any one who would like to buy an excellent camera at the lowest possible price.

Only drawback that you can say about this camera is, when we use the continuous shot drive mode, its a tad slow it takes few seconds to re-shoot, if you 've to shoot with flash on it furthers the delay.

I would like to thank the flipkart, for giving be the actual reviews of the products, and also for the best price.
The order was also placed within 28 hours!!! The packing was also excellent!!

My first review for the best camera.....
by Amal R on 2012-06-08

i prefer A1200 ,have one with me,purchased 3 weeks ago( sorry not from here...). did a lot of research before buying this camera. if you want a good low budget camera ( below INR 4500) this is the best option.

-Stylish and expensive look
-Excellent picture quality
-A lot of features ( smile, wink ,face detection.Miniature effect.etc..& all common features)
-720p HD Recording (no other camera within INR 5000 has this feature)
-Free 4 GB card, two 2100 mAh rechargeable Battery and charger (i got it all for INR 4350/-)
-A lot of customizations ( themes,start up image,sound.....)

-No image stabilization (has a software supported image stabilization but the image quality reduces to 2 MP)
-Night shots taken without flash and without tripod is too grainy (but with a tripod or a stable support other than your hand and the built in "night mode" feature the night shots are excellent even without flash)
-Half of the camera manual is with the device the rest is in the CD provided with it
-Make a little bit of sound( but can be silenced withe the "discrete mode"
-The rechargeable battery that comes free with it took 14 hrs to recharge(may be thats why its given free)

conclu:Value for money

Worth the Penny..!
by Techie Sandilyan on 2012-05-22

Before buying i was really not sure about its performance as it was low priced. But since I got it I thought it was 'worth the money spent'.

Its a descent camera with all the essential features. The 'Easy' mode enables even a beginner to make perfect shots. The View finder saves a lot of power

The only thing that disappointed me was the absence of 'Image Stabilization' but instead they have included a alternate feature called 'Blur Reduction' mode (U'll have to compromise on the quality if shot in BR)

Overall, Its the best for home use.

*12pix with 4X Zoom
*HD video recording
*Powerful Flash
*View Finder

*No Image Stabalization
*Little noise when shot in dark

I have never seen such a performer point and shoot camera in such a reasonable price. It is unbeleivable that video quality is distinguish i have never seen such a excellent video quaity before,i am sure it's a world's best cheapest camera, beleive me it will not let you down, go with it buy with confidence. i have seen a lot cameras till the range of 30,000 but did not found view finder but in Canon A1200 has view finder if your camera going out of battery you can switch off the display for more shots, One very importat thing i have noticed i have used so many brands and find that when we zoom during video caputuring voice can not record but in Canon A1200 it records voice during zoom in video mode, i am wonder why Canon A1200 is sold in this price it's a opportunity to grap it don't miss it buy now i you need entry level digital camera there is only on choice that is Canon A1200

Excellent Picture quality
by Arvind Sa on 2011-12-03

Been using this for 6 months, Excellent Pic quality, It has some good functions and useless picture effects. The viewfinder is useful for for taking more pics with display turned off. Good battery life. The downside is the free charger that comes with it, it wont show when battery is done charging. But hey the camera is ore worth than its price. Also i forgot to mention, i noticed the flash charging is a bit longer than the camera's my friend has, but since i rarely use flash, i don't find it a problem.

Best for every day as well as Special day Photography
by Arindam Mukherjee on 2012-06-13

I was a little bit choosy for deciding which one to buy as my first Digital Camera.
As their were so many 'well known' Brand Cameras available in 3K-5K Price range (As my budget price is 5K) it takes some time to research on other user's reviews.

Now after using it for 10 days or so, I am rating it 4.5 Out of 5.

1.LONG Lasting Battery Life and obviously Special Thanks to Optical Viewfinder for That
2.Excellent Value of Price, You cannot ask any more in this Price
3.Really GOOD Picture Quality
4.Nice Features
5.Great Performance, I've found some reviews earlier that it lags in speed. But after using it I don't feel it is SLOW! Maybe not the FASTEST but you don't need to be that speedy for capturing a Photo WITHOUT in some SPECIAL CASES.
6.Easy to Carry and Handle, it is small and very lightweight.
7.EXCELLENT Video Recording Quality, This the BEST feature in this Camera. Believe me you cannot imagine more better option than a 720p HD video recording feature from this price range cameras.

1.Focusing and ISO adjustments are the Tricky feature in this Camera. You need to use it more in different cases with different modes to get familiar with it. Auto focusing does not seem to work perfectly in some cases.
2.Blur reduction mode is not a good replacement of shake reduction.
3.You cannot expect good picture quality from Full Zoom mode capture. It gets a bit hazy.

So, this is my First 10 Day's usage Review. I am having Fun with this camera and I am TOTALLY satisfied with it as well as

Just buy it... But say a complete no no to free batteries...
by Amal A on 2012-09-17

All i wanted was a simple camera which i can use very casually. So, while i was searching for one, i put these factors as criteria for shortlisting:

1. Cost
2. Brand (Nikon/Canon)
3. Light Weight
4. Looks

Canon 1200 topped the list! Then i didn't waste even a single moment. Flipkart, as usual, delivered the product right on time.
When i bought this, in July, the price was around 3800 Rs. And, yes, it is light weight as well. I got a black one and i feel that's the sexiest one among all...
Picture clarity is reasonably good in day light and at night, ya, a bit of here and there. Wide screen mode is pretty good in this one. The functions, options etc etc, are all pretty good for something below 4K. In a way, its worth, or say more than worth, for what you pay...

Batteries :

They send me Envie batteries and charger along with this. You may keep the charger, but batteries, hurl it towards some scary or creepy things... If they run from the scene, congratulate yourself for making use of these stupid batteries. And get yourself some good rechargeable batteries. I bought Fuji cell one after that... Its okay.. But, at the max u can take 80 pics.

Okay, so that's my review about this. In a nut shell, this product is worth your money and you will enjoy it.

All thumbs up from my side for whoever is considering this cute lil one... :)
