Canon PowerShot A1400 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Canon knows how to maximise he popularity and effectiveness of its products, which we already know about being the world leader in cameras. Launching a product that does not get much buzz, but still manages to be a very high on the sales chart, has to be a budget device, and Canon definitely has made its new Canon PowerShot A1400 Point & Shoot, a silent assassin that made minimal buzz in the media and still manages to rule the charts in the budget segment. This is because, it is possibly the best and the cheapest camera that money can buy in recent times and comes embedded with a 16MP sensor along with high-end features like Wi-Fi and GPS. It really captures surprisingly sharp and excellent images, and like all the budget devices, is real customer friendly. In addition, you have an optical viewfinder in the device that is a definite rare discovery in low-end budget devices. Of course, it is not powered by Li-ion batteries, but draws its power from poor in performance, but easily reachable, AA batteries. The device is not perfect, for its HD video recording disappoints, and the noise while taking photos irritates, but still it is worth every penny you spend.

Design and Build Quality

Size wise, the Canon PowerShot A1400 is a little on the bigger and heavier side of the cameras, but hardly by too much. Exact dimensions of the device measure 94.7 mm x 61.7 mm x 29.8 mm, and weighs a comfortable 180grams. Its main competitor, Samsung DV150F is slimmer, horizontally and vertically, but Canon is cheaper. The extra depth provided in our device is to house the AA batteries.

Focus and Face Detection

There are 9 AF points on Canon PowerShot A1400 with the device working on TTL Autofocus. Focusing range of the device ranges from 3cm to infinity, in wide mode and 1.2metre to infinity in Tele mode. The figures however change in the maro mode, as the range there is 3 – 50cm wide.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Don’t expect anything extraordinary here as well, as Canon PowerShot A1400 houses only a modest 5x zoom lens which has the capabilities to cover just about 28 – 140mm range at 35mm equivalent. Aperture range starts from f/2.8 and ends at f/6.9. The f/2.8 aperture, when on the wider end really capitalises on a respectable amount of light, but the con here is that, the aperture here diminishes as soon as the zoom function is brought in.  This really limits the use of the function, which would have been a gem otherwise. The negative is multiplied with the absence of Optical Image Stabilization of the device, a feature that is frequently used in expensive cameras and compensates for the movement when you are shooting from a tripod. Optical Viewfinder very well zooms alongside the lens, in general, the view should be an approximation of what the camera is able to capture. The lens is definitely able to capture a bit more than what viewfinder really shows, so cropping the images while viewing can be expected. Optical viewfinder should also be avoided for Close-up macro shots that is, you will very well see an area there that is on the top and right of where the actual image frame is, through the viewfinder, and this is the optical parallax property.

Screen and Menus

Possibly one of the best features of this device, one you can rarely expect coming from an entry level device, Canon PowerShot A1400 sports surprisingly enough, an Optical Viewfinder, which works as an excellent back up or an alternative for using the LCD screen. This is probably the most highlighted feature of this device mainly because it is quite necessary, for the brightest of screens can be difficult to view in sunlight. Well, the screen on Canon PowerShot A1400 is primitive, as you would expect from an entry-level device, it sports the basic 2.7inches screen with basic 230k dot pixels with basic 320 x 240 resolutions, that being said, the angle of view on the screen is also limited. Turn the camera in any direction, be it upward, downward, left or right, and you get a dim image at around 45 degrees, this makes it difficult for you to extend your hand and get creative angles of shoot. The viewfinder is very modest in size, actually, no complaints here, because being on this device is a big deal itself. When you look through it, it feels like you are looking through a pinhole, with your subject very far. The positive of this is that, it has many moving optical elements that multiply the use of zoom lens in parallel.

Canon PowerShot A1400 derives all of its running power from the primitive AA batteries instead of the now standard for camera Li-Ion batteries. As a result of this, this camera does not come with a charger, but of course the course of the camera can very well be run on rechargeable AA batteries which are neatly available everywhere. As mentioned earlier, the camera gets a little bulky in order to accommodate the AA batteries, so it is a little harder to carry this device then others. On the positive though is the availability of a handgrip.

Video Mode

Video quality does not excel, but you certainly get more than you spend in Canon PowerShot A1400 with maximum capacity being 720p at 25fps in the QuickTime player format. This is one problem with devices running on a CCD sensor, for they are incapable of video recording in Full HD 1080p format, so there is absolutely no surprise that Full HD option is not available here. The video footage does look a little grainy, but that is only because the camera has access to digital zoom when it is recording. Memory cards supported on the device are SD, SDHC and SDXC cards.

Like most of the budget cameras, a CMOS sensor is available in this device as well, it runs on the standard 1/2.3 inches CCD sensor, the problem with CCD sensor is that it does not do justice to you in higher ISO settings as CMOS sensors do. If you are looking for a device with effortlessly good CMOS sensor, go for Sony Cyber-Shot HX30V, but then, it costs as much as 4 times of what Canon PowerShot A1400 does.
