Canon PowerShot G16 Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews
Canon PowerShot G16 becomes the first camera in G-series to feature Wi-Fi connectivity and first in entire range to feature manual focus peaking with its release. G16 is but a good revision of G15 and so offers same image sensor with megapixel 12.1MP and zoom lens up to 5x optical zoom. Whats new is the image processor that enables, fast AF, video capture and burst shoot. A number of new shoot modes have been too added while control panel at the back has been reworked. At the roof there is a dedicated dial for exposure compensation plus there are control dials at rear and front. Rear also has a 3 inches wide 922K dot LCD screen. There is an optical viewfinder that helps lot, as by turning LCD off you can use the viewfinder and consequently save battery charge for 410 more shots.
There is a 12.1 1/1.7-inch CMOS image MP sensor at work. The image processor is DIGIC 6. The video recording can be done at Full HD 1080p resolution at max frame rate of 60fps, you can also choose 30fps. Sound gets recorded in stereo format. Zoom of the camera covers 35mm-equivalent focal length range of 28m to 140mm. The max. aperture range is f/1.8 – f/2.8. Optical image stabilization, fair low light performance and depth-of-field blur for emphasizing your subject.
Canon has induced a star mode that lets you achieve nightscape, star time-lapse and star trails. Star nightscape opens opens up stars(finely detailed) above nightly background. Star time lapse makes up for video showing star motion as they cross skies. Star trails blurs the star into trails. The background defocus lets you stress upon your subject with depth-of-field blur. HDR (High Dynamic Range) mode is quite handy to take many at once shots. The mode lets you apply Art Bold, Natural, Art Standard. Art Embossed and Art Vivid effects to image.
What G16 may become known to many for is due to the marked improvement in Wi-Fi connectivity. It is now simpler than what you'll see in G15. You needn't install an extra software or enter passwords or something. Pick you smart device is easily link the camera and the device. To have video output, both stan-def and high-def video output connections are provided. There is option de rigeur USB data connection as well. On public Wi-Fi networks you can share your work but to pass it onto social online sites (Facebook, Flickr, Twitter and YouTube) you'd have to make a transit via Canon iMAGE GATEWAY service. Do not expect direct connection to email servers or social sites.
Canon G16 has also shown improvement in its AF speed as compared to G15. You can shoot stills continually at rate 12.2fps up to 6 frames, after that there will be slowdown to 9.3fps for next 522 frames. When you turn from manual focus to AF you can manage to achieve 5.7fps for same. You can store your work on high-capacity SDXC/SDHC/UHS-I cards. The camera derives its power from NB-10L battery pack. You can take 360 shots on full charge.
Design and Build Quality
Canon PowerShot G16 is a predecessor turned successor, meaning there is not much to the build of G16 that differs from G15. Since the design has been accepted by the public for much time, Canon didn't really consider much on innovating for G16. The new camera targets the hands of advanced photographers who love to rely on DSLRs, G16 is supposed to be a attractive device to them. What makes that statement is the presence of quick access physical controls and a number of dials on the camera. At the roof you'd find a dial atop another. One is the mode dial that lets you turn to different exposure choices comprising semi-auto modes(shutter and aperture priority) and fully auto modes. The EC(Exposure Compensation) dial comes under this dial easily accessible by your thumb. At the rear there is wide range of dials and buttons such as you can change ISO directly and AF point as well. Almost all the functions are affected by physical controls.
The rear has been affected slightly. The shortcut button now sits below the video button, you can quickly access it by thumb. Yes you can enjoy the single-handed shooting. There is no direct print button but via Wi-Fi you can connect to Canon PIXMA MG7120 or MG5220 Wireless Photo All-in-One printers for direct prints. Apart from this there is dedicated button for ISO sensitivity control as well. For changing metering modes you'd now have to navigate menus.
Focus and Face Detection
Canon PowerShot G16 reportedly has faster AF than G15, Canon says there is 50% improvement. The AF has contrast detect sensor, selective single point, Multi area, tracking, single, face detection, continuous, live view. Features of an AF assist lamp and manual focus peaking. The minimum focus distance you can achieve from your subject is 1cm, quite worthy of macro mode shooting. G16 is the first to use manual focus peaking which allows you to select its own sensitivity, in terms of strength. You can also select colors on subject in a scene. Speaking of focus, two new creative modes have been introduced to the camera. The background defocus when on takes two shots of a scene, one out of focus and other entirely in focus, combines them afterwards to achieve DSLR-style background defocus
Lens and Image Stabilization
Canon PowerShot G16 uses optical zoom up to 5x covering focal length(35mm-equivalent) from 28(at wide angle end) to 140mm(at telephoto end). The lens is bright enough to stress on subject with DOF (depth-of-field) blur or when you face low lit conditions. The aperture coverage is f1.8-2.8. The intelligent IS optical image stabilization. The stabilization mechanism picks one from set of six distinct modes for the purpose to reduce the camera shake depending on shoot conditions.
Screen and Menus
At the rear you have a 3 inches diagonally wide 922k dot resolution, LCD. The menu system of Canon PowerShot G16 is reasonably laid out and easy to use.
Canon PowerShot G16 runs on Rechargeable Li-ion Battery NB-10L. Now there are two things and one advantage to consider. First is, with LCD on, you can achieve 360 shots on single charge, with LCD off you can have 770 (more than double) number of shots on same charge. The advantage is that you use OVF (Optical Viewfinder) in the latter option.
Canon PowerShot G16 delivers Full HD video recording feature with resolution 1080p at frame size 1920 x 1080 pixels and frame rate 60fps (saved in .mp4 format especially for online sharing). Other video shoot options are 1280 x 720 (HD), 640x480 (VGA ) and 320 x 240 (QVGA ). The full HD's low light performance is luckily very good. For a near to film look, since sadly there is no 24fps, you can turn 30fps shoot at Full HD. The image processor (DIGIC 6) and Fine Movie Detail mechanism work in sync to elevate noise cut and improve overall quality. Dynamic mode if very efficient under the discussed mode. The sound comes in stereo format via mic on the body. Videos gets encoded in .MOV, H.264 format. As far connectivity is concerned, both HD and standard video outputs can be availed. So HDMI port with HDMI-CEC support and USB connectivity too help you to get your clips transferred to your PC.
Canon PowerShot G16 uses 1/1.7-inch sized, CMOS, back-illuminated, 12.1MP sensor. The pixels' width is 4000 and height is 3000. Aspect ratios that perform are 1:1 , 3:2 , 4:3 , 4:5 and 16:9. The ISO sensitivity range covers ISO levels from 80 to 12800 ISO.
