Canon PowerShot G7 X Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Canon Powershot G7 X offers a 4.2x optical zoom lens with an aperture measuring f/1.8-2.8 and a focal length measuring 24-100, in equivalent 35mm terms. The image stabilization feature is of optical type with 5-axis enhanced dynamic image stabilization that lets the camera keep images sharper enough even when the shutter speed is slow. The control ring about the lens allows for ease in changing settings, and the scroll wheel at the back and exposure compensation dial at the roof all help in aptly configuring the camera before any shoot. The sensor used is of 1-inch size 20.2MP back lit CMOS type. The camera comes with a DIGIC 6 image processing engine and a high speed system from Canon that allow burst speed of 6.5fps and 4.4fps with autofocus tracking. The ISO range covers 12800 to 125 marks. With a 3 inch tilt screen holding a resolution of 1040k dots, selfies can be taken. Videos can be recorded in full HD resolution at up to 60 frames per second and full manual mode control can be achieved in video mode as well. The connectivity options include NFC and Wi-Fi. Overall, the camera works fine as a typical compact.

Design and Build Quality

Canon Powershot G7 X feels quite well designed with a solid metallic body, decent weight and feels heavier than the looks it imparts. Exposure compensation and mode dial are stiff, so you don't end up turning them 'on' accidentally. The tilt screen is firmly in its place and it is easy to shoot low angle shots with it. There is almost no grip at the front of the camera but a small thumb grip at the back, and with a grip on lens' ring it becomes easier to hold the camera with both hands. It is recommended that you use the wrist strap. When you have the manual mode on, you can use the rear scroll wheel and front dial to set the shutter and aperture settings easily. The dedicated Wi-Fi button at the side of the camera enables Wi-Fi connectivity that lets you connect your Apple or Android phone to it via Canon Camera window app. With the app, you can easily view photos, geotag images, setup remote shooting and click images. Furthermore, focus, flash and zoom can be handled remotely.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon Powershot G7 X comes with following focus modes; Autofocus, Face Detection, Manual, AF Tracking, Multi, Centre and Touch AF. The minimum focusing distance is of 5cm. There is a focus peaking option to help you in focusing manually, though focusing can be done via touchscreen as well . In manual mode, only two options for zooming are there; 2x and 4x. The burst mode is of 6.5fps without autofocus and 4.4fps with continuous autofocus tracking. Face detection is also present.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon Powershot G7 X offers a 4.2x optical zoom lens that covers 24mm to 100m focal length with a maximum aperture of f/1.8 to f/2.8. Overall, the lens' performance is good. At the centre of the frame, detail is good when you are shooting at a wide-angle position, though details at the corner at times become softer. When shooting at the telephoto end of the lens, the detail is good enough. Chromatic aberration and purple fringing are well handled and can only be noticed when viewing pictures at 100 percent. At 5cm away from the lens' front, macro shots come out good. If you zoom in from this point, you will notice that the camera takes you even closer to the subject but will become shaky. To acheive better macro shots, one must stop the lens since the shots become softer when shot through the brightest aperture of f/1.8. Pincushion distortion and barrel distortion are low as the camera corrects the JPEG images within itself. The lens flare does not come to notice unless a really bright light hits the lens.

Screen and Menus

Canon Powershot G7 X has a function button at the back of the camera that brings up all the commonly used photo settings over the monitor. One can also make use of the touchscreen to set the menu options. At the back there is a 3-inch wide tilt touch sensitive screen with a resolution of 1040k dots, in other words, the screen can tilt well for selfie shots. The screen can be used to tap focus before taking photographs and while capturing videos. The screen tilts only one way and so, low-level shots become easy. Also, the screen has good visibility when viewed under the outdoor ambient light.

Canon Powershot G7 X is rated at 210 shot counts as per the CIPA/Canon testing standards. When you turn on the ECO mode, the shot count increases to 310 shots. 210 is not much of a number to be impressed with, therefore it is recommended for the users to keep the camera in ECO mode whenever they can or buy a spare battery. The battery type is Li-Ion and inside the battery pack you also get a battery charger.

Video Mode

Canon Powershot G7 X sports a good quality video with recording capability of Full HD resolution at 60fps along with an optical zoom. ISO3200 is the highest mark in the ISO range when you are shooting videos and can make use of the touchscreen to tap focus while recording.

Canon Powershot G7 X sports a 20.2MP back lit CMOS sensor with pixels width of 5472 units and pixels height of 3648 units. This sensor has a size of 1-inch and the aspect ratios covered by it are; 4:3, 3:2, 16:9, 1:1 and 4:5. ISO 125 to ISO400 is the range where you can attain high detail and lowest noise. As you move above, the detail drops slightly at ISO800, though noise is still handled well. For low light conditions, ISO3200 to ISO1600 is considered to provide good results with less noise and more detail. At ISO 6400, noise levels are stronger and it is recommended that this setting should be avoided when possible. One may still resize and use the results produced at this level. ISO12800 projects very high noise and very low detail.

  • Canon Powershot G7 X offers great image quality with HDR and a good dynamic range
  • Noise performance is remarkable
  • 1-inch sized backlit CMOS sensor
  • With ECO mode on, you can acheive 310 shot counts
  • 4.2x optical zoom lens with focal length equalling 24-100mm and a bright aperture of f/1.8-2.8
  • Metallic body is solid and there is dual-axis electronic level
