Canon PowerShot N2 Digital Camera White - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Canon Powershot N2 digital camera has built-in Wi-Fi and NFC for easy image sharing with wireless networks, printer and mobile devices. It has a 16.1 megapixels CMOS sensor and an 8x optical zoom lens, which is a 35mm equivalent of 28-224mm. To help keep images sharp, there is a lens-shift image stabilisation. The camera shoots continuous shots at 2.7 fps. When shooting, there is a Smart Auto feature that automatically selects from 58 scenes and adjusts the camera settings. With Hybrid Auto, the camera captures a 4 second movie clip before each shot and combines them into a 720p HD movie. There are a number of creative modes such as toy camera effect and miniature. There is also a Creative Shot feature, which lets you to take a shot and then it creates five extra creative images of the same by using a variety of artistic ways. It randomly chooses 5 effects out of over 30. Videos are recorded in full 1080p HD with image stabilisation and optical zoom equally available.

The white balance performance under incandescent lights gives a warm result with the incandescent preset performing well. The AWB performs much better under fluorescent lighting, with fluorescent presets having a slight colour cast. Canon Powershot N2 looks good and produces decent images but is quite expensive. However, you can spend much less and get more zoom and Wi-Fi, as in Canon IXUS 265 HS. Canon has sacrificed traditional zoom and shutter release, reduced flash size considerably and made the battery life quite low. The other features such as touchscreen and built-in Wi-Fi are good including the image quality, even at higher ISO's. So, there are enough reasons to justify purchasing it, should you want a unique camera.

Design and Build Quality

Canon Powershot N2 comes with a metallic body and an unusual design. It is square shaped as compared to the rectangular design usually seen in typical digital compact cameras. At the back side of the camera, there is a screen that can rotate by 90 degrees. It has a 2.8-inch wide touchscreen without many buttons. At one side of the camera, there are power and playback buttons. At the other side, there is a switch for smart device connectivity and a creative shot mode. At the front side, there are two rings wherein one can be be turned down or up for releasing the shutter. The one inside, turns away to adjust zoom.

The camera can be used the other way round too, since shutter and zoom are capable of being operated both ways. The camera is different and it takes a while to get used to it. For using Wi-Fi, one can easily connect the camera with a smart device by using the connect button present in one side of the camera. After you are done connecting the camera with a mobile device, you can open the Canon application. You can also connect over NFC connection if the device supports it. And with Canon application, you can easily download videos and images from the camera into a smart device.

Focus and Face Detection

The minimum focusing distance achieved by the lens of Canon Powershot N2 is 1cm. The focusing modes are touch autofocus, centre, multi, face detection, spot and autofocus. One can also use the touchscreen to release the shutter and focus. The LED flash isn't powerful and large, since it comes from the same round hole as lamp for focus assist.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon Powershot N2 offers detailed imaging at both ends of the lens. Some purple fringing can be spotted too at areas that show contrast. The minimum focusing distance is only 1cm. The macro shots have decent detail. At times, the macro shots are difficult to achieve as the camera might not perform swiftly enough to capture the images. The lens is an 8x optical zoom lens with a maximum aperture of f/3 – f/5.9. In 35mm terms, focal length covered by the entire lens is in the range of 28mm – 224mm. Image stabilization feature is present too.

Screen and Menus

Canon Powershot N2 offers a simple menu layout. The LCD screen is 2.8-inch (diagonally) with a resolution of 460k dots.

Canon Powershot N2 comes rated with 200 shots as per CIPA testing standards, which is quite low if you wish to use Wi-Fi often. It can be extended to 200 shots with an activated ECO mode. The battery type that comes in the bundle is NB-9L.

Video Mode

Canon Powershot N2 records videos in full HD resolution, wherein the video quality is quite good. One can also make use of the optical zoom while recording videos. The frame rate at which the videos are recorded is 30fps. There is no stereo sound input.

Canon Powershot N2 offers a 16.1MP backside illuminated sensor. The width and height of the pixels are 4608 units and 3456 units. The aspect ratios used here are 1:1, 16:9, 3:2 and 4:3. The noise is low at 200 and 100ISO. The images tend to become soft at ISO400 and gain even more softness at ISO800. At ISO1600, the images gain another level of softness. At ISO3200, one can spot a bit of burning in areas that are contrasting. At higher ISOs, the image quality is fine for sharing them over online social media.

  • Canon Powershot N2 come with a tilt screen
  • There is an in-built NFC and Wi-Fi
  • Good image quality
  • At high ISOs performance is decent
  • Design is unique

  • Canon Powershot N2 does not come with an auto panorama mode

  • Shutter release and zoom control may not be to everyone's liking
  • LED flash is bright yet small
  • Macro shots aren't great
