Canon PowerShot SX160 IS Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

A camera from Canon certainly needs no introduction, so let us cut down straight to the chase, Canon PowerShot SX160 is a portable high-zoom digital compact camera which features a 16 megapixel sensor, 16x optical zoom and is image stabilised, has manual controls for controlling shutter-speed and aperture, digital effects and it works on AA batteries. Canon PowerShot SX160 IS is available in 3 variations in colors, Red, Black and White. As such, if you are used to a pocketeable compact device which can be slipped inside the pocket without much care and is easy for travel purposes, this is probably not your device. Canon PowerShot SX160 IS has to be held in your hand pretty much all the time, hang in your neck and put it in your bag: two other alternatives. That is the extent till which Canon PowerShot SX160 is unbearable, other than that, it is not. The grip provided in the device is easily big enough such that the camera can be held with real ease in your hand without being flashy. The batteries somehow do not really provide the user with the power which is claimed by Canon. When tested by a trusted source, it was expected that the battery will run out sooner than on normal days but the results were really shocking, the batteries died out halfway through the test which is really disappointing. The major reason behind it is nothing else than the use of AA batteries.

Design and Build Quality

The exact dimensions of Canon PowerShot SX160 IS are 111mm x 72.5mm x 44.1mm and the device weighs a good 291 gms. This proves that the device is not necessarily compact, although it is really good to handle. The outside of Canon PowerShot SX160 feels quite a bit plastic and despite the size, it has very light insides too. All this plastic inside the device shouts on top of the lungs “BUDGET DEVICE”. For the people with large hands, this may well be the ideal Point and Shoot device to use. Because of the large area available on the camera there is lot of space to fit in utility buttons without making it all cramped. In fact, there is also space to make a decent thumb rest. On the top plate of this camera, mounts a pop-up flash which is in the raised area in the middle of the device. The flash is activated by pressing the black button which is just above the screen. A large command dial sits just to the right of the flash and it might not be the first time that a command dial has been included on a camera of this price but we still think it's pretty swell of Canon to include it. There are 10 options ranging from full manual mode to fully automated where the camera stops shy of taking the picture for you.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon PowerShot SX160 IS features many autofocus modes which also involve face detection (obviously). The device basically comes with Canon’s standard 9 point autofocus system. Canon’s Digic 4 processor has definitely improved on the face recognition provided on earlier models and in poor light conditions, despite being a budget device, it tracks faces even when the person is turned almost to full profile. There are three AF modes namely Continuous, Servo AF/AE, Tracking AF which is provided alongside an AF lock and an AF Assist Beam. Manual focus feature is also provided in the device unlike predecessors. Canon PowerShot SX 160 HS can zoom in closest to 1cm wide from front of lens in macro mode.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Canon PowerShot SX150 IS features a huge 16x optical zoom lens which has a range of 5 to 80mm, which varies from 35mm equivalent 28mm right down to a maximum of 35mm equivalent 448mm. That makes it a really pricey device at the telephoto end. An optical zoom of 16x is flaunted, which is when added with ZoomPlus makes it 32x. Also additional digital zoom of 4x is provided with Digital Tele-Converter Approx. 1.6x or 2.0x and Safety Zoom which makes the effective zoom to a huge 64x. The device also features Image stabilisation (lens shift type) and 3.5-stop Intelligent IS.

Screen and Menus

Canon PowerShot SX160 HS houses a 3 inch TFT LCD screen which covers the major portion of the rear. Also, the pixel resolution is the basic 230,000 dots with approximate 100% coverage. Now let us talk about menus, there are two main menus to use while taking pictures. Arguably, the one that people probably use the most is the Function menu. It's accessed by pressing the button in the middle of the wheel on the back of the camera. Interestingly, it changes depending on the mode it's in. In manual modes such as P, Av, Tv or M the menu is wider with features such as white-balance, colours, flash compensation, metering and compression. Auto is simpler with only three options for aspect ratio, file size and video quality. Live mode also only has three modes which we mentioned earlier.

Battery

Canon PowerShot SX160 IS is powered on twin AA batteries, which according to CIPA are good only to produce 180 shots. To add fuel to the fire, the batteries somehow do not really provide the user with the power which is claimed by Canon. When tested by a trusted source, it was expected that the battery will run out sooner than on normal days but the results were really shocking, the batteries died out halfway through the test which is really disappointing. The major reason behind it is nothing else than the use of AA batteries.

Video Mode

Still no 1080p Full HD video quality, one of the biggest drawbacks of this device is the unavailability of Full HD video recording, although Canon PowerShot SX160 IS features HD 720p 1280 x 720 resolution video at 30 frames per second.

Sensors

Sensor or Transducer is a device that converts one form of signal to other. In case of cameras this sensor converts optical images to electronic signal. Canon PowerShot SX160 IS works on 16 megapixel 1/2.3 inch CCD sensor.

Pros

1. Designing body design
2. 16x optical zoom lens
3. Cheap AA batteries
4. Manual controls
5. Exceptional macro performance
6. Good colour and white balance

Cons

1. Low 230,000 display resolution
2. Low battery life with Alkaline batteries
3. Noise performance above ISO200 is a disaster
4. Flash takes long to charge

The real drawback is, this camera shows low battery immediately after i plug in the new disposable batteries. That is why i'm using the re-chargeable ones now.

Great Product from Canon
by Dhrubajyoti Basu on 2012-10-22

A worthy upgrade to SX150IS. The greatest feature is of course a super intelligent auto focus which even optimises the zoom range. Also, capturing HD video had never been so easy, even in low light.
