Canon PowerShot SX50 HS Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

At the time of its launch, our reviewed camera has brought in a revolution, for it became the first camera in the world to feature a jaw dropping 50x optical zoom. Yes! You read it right; it is actually a 50x zoom camera. It replaced Canon PowerShot SX40 HS that featured the now ‘average’ 35x optical zoom. Although, when you talk about the features of Canon PowerShot SX50HS, it has zoom written all over it,  shares the same Digic 5 processor, possesses the 12.1MP CMOS sensor and a similar body styling that was seen in its predecessor. Also, we get the same video quality of full HD 1080p at 24 frames per second though Canon has finally added RAW support to Canon PowerShot SX50HS such that, it is put on an equal footing with rivals Panasonic and Fujifilm. Canon SX50 HS also manages to retain the services of the 202k pixels Electronic VF, and has a marginally larger screen clocking at 2.8 inches.

It is a vari-angle LCD screen, whose resolution has been doubled to 460k dot pixels. Talk about the other improvements in the camera, there is the faster and better 13 frames per second continuous shooting which is available for a slightly longer 10-frame burst, albeit with expanded sensitivity range measuring 80 to 6400 ISO. But then, we will just say it again, it is certainly the zoom of this device that everyone will have his/her eyes on, and rightly so. That, alongside the capability of shooting RAW images put it in league with cameras like Panasonic FZ200 and Fujifilm HS30 EXR that certainly appeal to enthusiasts who are keen to extract the best quality possible out of the compact CMOS sensors of these devices.

Design and Build Quality

Though Canon PowerShot SX50 HS comes packed with almost the same weight and dimensions as its precursor, its look is certainly a lot different. The top panel looks more elegant now rather than looking more rough, for it has been made flat which gives it the look, and the grip is now a little too deep, which makes it very easy for the camera to maintain a secure hold over the device. It still is not as deep as the grip provided over Panasonic Lumix FZ200, but certainly, it is a huge achievement over the earlier model and unless you have some YETI hands, you are good to go. The body may feel a little cheap, as it does give away a plasticky feel, but then it is strong and well made with a really solid feel to it.

The control layout of the camera has also changed in many ways and do not necessarily add up to the radical departure from Canon PowerShot SX40HS, so if you are thinking of upgrading your device, you would definitely want to know some news ways of doing things right. First in the list is to maintain the location of the On/Off button, which has been shifted to the opposite side of the mode dial of the camera. Its mode dial itself provides the PASM exposure modes in addition to the two custom setting positions C1 and C2. There has also been a new addition to the mode dial of Canon PowerShot SX50HS, which puts the device directly up for Movie Digest mode.

Focus and Face Detection

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS provides the camera with a huge array of AF modes that cover most situations - from fully automatic to manual. Like all Canon compacts, face detect AF is the default focus mode when Auto is on the exposure mode dial of the camera. Face Detect on the camera identifies faces inside a frame and sets exposure alongside white balance.

Lens and Image Stabilization

The segment for which this range of cameras are made is simply about lenses and their ever increasing zoom ranges and we have seen as to how Canon has increased the stakes and is simply outplaying the competition. But, with this camera, Canon has simply outdone itself by providing a range of a humungous 50x zoom with a 35mm equivalent range that measures 24 – 1200mm for optical zoom. This has made Canon PowerShot SX50 HS the first camera in the world to touch the 50x mark.

Screen and Menus

One good thing that we really appreciated in Canon PowerShot SX40 HS is its 202k dot electronic viewfinder that was also on 40 HS’s predecessor. But still, there has been no advancement in the EVF, and is actually a feature that did not get any improvement from 2008, and is now, beginning to show its age, and is just that Lumix FZ200’s 1.3 million dot resolution EVF just outstrips the one on our reviewed device. EVF is certainly not the only way of composing your pictures in Canon PowerShot SX50 HS, which also has a 2.8 inches and a more detailed 460k dot pixel LCD screen, and given that its predecessor had a 2.8 inches 230k pixel primitive screen, it is certainly a welcome improvement. So, Canon has been able to be up to date in this segment.

The combined card/battery compartment of Canon PowerShot SX50 is located right behind the handgrip of the camera and you can access it by a door that is available at the base. Canon PowerShot SX50 HS employs the same NB-10L Lithium-ion battery, which was earlier spotted in its predecessor and was rated at 920mAh. This battery, as per claims made by Canon has enough power to keep it working for 315 shots, which is quite a shocking drop from the 380 shots mentioned in the predecessor. No doubt, a bigger and a more detailed screen packed alongside a longer zoom do take its toll on the battery life of the device. And, you would comfortably be able to make out should you make use of an EVF instead of the screen thereby, making use of a spare battery would certainly be advisable. Compared to its competition with Panasonic Lumix FZ200’s battery life of 540 shots, we are constrained to say that the performance in this department is simply poor.

Video Mode

Although, Canon PowerShot SX50HS is all about high zoomed images, it certainly does not lack in the video recording feature, and can shoot videos that measure up to 1080p full HD at 24 frames per second with the option of 720p and 480p VGA modes. Recording procedure is standard, just press the big red button and you are ready to go, and can completely use the lens while filming. You can also take photos while filming at full resolution, although get cropped at 16:9 when you are filming in HD quality.

Canon PowerShot SX50 HS comes with a 12.1MP CMOS sensor that is coupled which a Digic 5 processor just like its predecessor, but then, there are some important differences here. Most significant of these differences is that in Canon PowerShot SX50 HS, you have to save RAW data additionally with JPEGs. What we found rather surprising is that the RAW mode on the camera is made available in 5 aspect ratios instead of just one in the original resolution. This overcomes the shortcoming of earlier SX40 HS over Panasonic FZ200. The sensitivity range of the device is now 80-6400 ISO and the shutter speed now varies from a minimum of 15 seconds to a maximum of 1/200 seconds.

  • 50x optical zoom is a great feature
  • Zoom motor works fast, going from wide angle to full telephoto
  • Popup flash provides good low light results
  • Hot shoe also allows you to add an external flash if needed
  • SX50 works well in fully automatic mode
  • Camera is also a strong performer in manual and advanced modes
  • Most of the camera's control buttons are well placed and are of good sizes
  • Large right hand grip is comfortable to use
  • Articulated LCD makes it easy to use the SX50 on a tripod
  • Optical image stabilization is a must-have feature on an ultra-zoom camera
  • Electronic viewfinder is nice feature to have
  • Good image quality
  • Separate battery charger included
  • Menu structure can be customized, which is a great feature
  • Shortcut button and customized settings on mode dial are great
  • Full HD video mode
  • Can customize the shooting information shown on the LCD or in the EVF

  • No full HD video mode
  • Exposure can be a bit strong at times when shooting in the automatic exposure modes in bright sunlight
  • No rubberized grip like the T3i
  • LCD is a bit small (2.7 inches), but usable
  • Live View shooting performance is still quite sluggish
  • Autofocus during Live View is very poor, hunting for focus both indoors and out
