Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR Point & Shoot - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR Point & Shoot camera gives the impression of a DSLR prominent because of its gigantic 30x zoom lens that covers 24 – 720 i.e. 35 mm equivalent focal range. The maximum aperture to which is f/2.8, it can go as close as 1 cm for Super Macro shots too. This includes a 16 Megapixel EXR back side illuminated CMOS sensor and this together with the CMOS shift Image Stabilization, High ISO, Twist barrel manual zoom and focusing controls. This is not all, to assure your pictures stay accurate and clear the camera features Fuji’s advanced Anti-Blur. Another prominent feature is the Electronic viewfinder; camera automatically switches from LCD to EVF cause of the Eye sensor. With one go you can change from snapping pictures to recording full HD 1080p video. All your high quality images and videos can be viewed effortlessly and clearly on the 3 inch tilting 460,000 dot LCD screen. Fuji has packed the camera with other important features such as the very efficient EXR AUTO mode that can recognize as many as 103 different shooting patterns and set settings accordingly.  In the creative section you will find Pro focus mode, Motion Panorama, Pro low light, even bracketing options and even high speed continuous shooting at 8fps. It’s a budget appropriate and is filled with competent processing and features.

Design and Build Quality

Being a little less heavy than its predecessor, Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR Point & Shoot weighs 687 grams with the inclusion of battery and memory cards. Its dimensions 130 (W) x 96.6 (H) x 126 (D) mmcan tell you that it isn’t your compact point and shoot, but rather heavy. The camera built wise is not different than its successor, it has the mode dial placed on the top with the PASM, the EXXR modes, Auto, two scene modes, Panorama etc. Accompanying this is a command dial that works exposure, menu selection and even exposure.  On the rear you will find all the buttons, such as the button that selects between LCD or EVF viewing, ISO sensitivity, metering mode, white balance. It comes with a rubber grip to help you have a solid grasp and the battery compartment is placed very smartly on the right of the body that can be accessed even as the camera is mounted on a tripod.

Focus and Face Detection

This more on the edge of being a DSLR camera comes with four focusing modes: Multi, Area, Tracking and Centre. The centre is default mode and works very likely as the Tracking mode that is active in movie mode. For Area, multi and centre the camera uses out of 49 AF areas to cover most of the frame especially edges. Multi auto mode purposely works depending upon your subject’s location. After use you will find that the auto focus feature is fast and accurate. It takes no more than 0.16 seconds to lock focus. The face detection feature cooperates with the Auto focus to sufficiently detecting faces even as they move. Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR Point & Shoot can recognize as many as 10 faces and optimize settings for best image outcome. Additionally you can ‘register’ up to 8 people so that every time you camera founds them, priority focus goes to them. Lastly, the camera can distinguish between cat and dog faces, making it a delight if you have pets or like taking animal pictures

Lens and Image Stabilization

The camera houses an incredible non interchangeable 30X zoom lens that comes with f/2.8 maximum aperture and an optical zoom range from wide angle 24mm and ultra telephoto 720mm. When you go to the Function button you discover the Intelligent Digital Zoom that magnifies to a great 60X that is equivalent to 1440mm of amazing focal length. With such a remarkable lens the camera can also take Super Macro Shots at 1cm distance to the subject. Further the camera features there fantastic way to make sure your picture remain blurring free. Firstly the CMOS shift image together with the high ISO, this is a blessing especially when you are concerned about taking long telephoto images. The third feature includes Anti Blur mode, this uses Multi frame technology to give you four layered shots continuously at high speed to end up with a single, haze free image.

Screen and Menus

For composing and viewing your photos and videos alike you have a high contrast ‘Tilting’ 3.0 inch Large LCD monitor. It comprises of 460,000 dot and can twist both as high as 45 degree and as low as 90 degrees. To top it the screen is available for wide viewing up to 160 degrees in both horizontal and vertical directions. Also features a ‘sunlight mode’ especially for proper viewing under bright situations.

The camera lasts 600 shots all thanks to the rechargeable lithium ion battery.

Video Mode

It can shoot full HD videos at 30 frames per second at 1920 x 1080p. The stereo is available within this and seems to work quite impressively. Within this mode the auto focus works to provide more accuracy in videos. Fujifilm FinePix HS30EXR Point & Shoot features the brilliant Movie scene recognition mode that kills guesswork and works to bring the best out in your videos. With the given HDMI port you can review your videos on HDTV.

HS30EXR comes with a ½ inch back side illuminated EXR CMOS sensor that together with the remarkable 16 megapixels give you striking images and notable camera performance. Due to this sensor the camera is capable of many incredible features especially the very active auto focus. At the end the pictures are high quality and worth showing off.

The electronic viewfinder is big, bright and has high resolution. The LCD screen works brilliant and is bright; this with the Function button is simply great. Lastly, the Face Tracking feature enabled in the movie mode is a joy.

Within the video mode the manual zoom is not exactly ideal; the camera is also pretty heavy something that will can be taken as an entry level DSLR. When it comes to stacking modes and low light you will have to compromise with half the resolution.
