Fujifilm FinePix SL300 Point & Shoot Digital Camera Black - Expert Reviews

Overall Review

Now, let us start this with being straight upfront, Fujifilm FinePix SL300 is the talk of the town currently and has a lot going its way especially the price tag on it. There is a 30x optical zoom tagged on the camera that only means that now you can even reach your subjects that are practically too far away for a whole bunch of cameras and that include other superzoom devices too. Also, it looks good and the build quality is pretty decent as well. Now, we wouldn’t say the image quality of the camera to be up to scratch, though it looks much more like a painting at full 100% magnification and we actually did miss the physical zoom and the focus rings that the high-end Fujifilm HS30EXR and Fujifilm HS20EXR models give to the consumers.

Now still, if you really want a camera that has a superb zoom quality and has the looks of a DSLR, our reviewed device certainly fits in our pocket. The picture quality of the camera is pretty decent when you view it upfront from a distance, but when you sink into the depth of the picture by zooming into, it does have an effect that we can only describe the image as painted at best. Now, if you can handle that then the colors of Fujifilm FinePix SL300 are recorded very amazingly and there is actually a decent amount of detailing too. That been said, we are still quite unsure as to why this sensor performs like this and the camera does make us wish that Fujifilm does put EXR sensor in pretty much all their cameras.

Fujifilm FinePix SL300 is much more responsive than Fujifilm Finepix S4000 that sits right below the camera in the array of devices, the camera indeed has a faster start up time and a swift AF speed. That been said, the camera still does suffer from a bit of a shutter lag though, and the AutoFocus on it suffers from the low lighting conditions. An important decision has been made by the company  to replace the existing AA battery trend with a much more sophisticated Li-Ion batteries which provide for longevity, although we still would suggest an additional spare in case you plan a long family vacation. When you talk of style and features of the camera, you will see that Fujifilm FinePix is pretty much ideal for all the photography enthusiasts who have any kind of experience in using a DSLR or for those who want to experience everything that a DSLR can do for them without adding on additional cost and weight.

A brief feature set for Fujifilm FinePix SL300 is a 14 megapixels CCD sensor, which is quite annoying compared to the CMOS technology but then, Fujifilm has packed it with a sensor shift image stabilisation feature. Then obviously, as mentioned before, there is a 30x optical zoom with a 35mm equivalent focal length measuring from 24mm wide angle to 720mm telephoto, 720p HD video quality at 30 frames per second, 3 inches screen which is decently detailed at 460k dots, fast start up time, improved speed of AF and an upgraded response time.

Design and Build Quality

Fujifilm FinePix SL300 is essentially stylised as a DSLR but is it actually built like one is the question. The answer to this is that the casing of this camera is actually primarily plastic with a leatherette trim in places where you will essentially hold the camera. The dial for Shooting Mode is really large and is quite easy to get a real hold of. Add that to a very swift and positive clicking styling which essentially reduces the camera from being moved out of order. Now, once you look at the camera, it actually seems that despite the shape that this thing has on it which makes it look very desirable, it is still a bridge type camera aimed essentially towards enthusiasts and would in no way interest someone looking for a DSLR kit. It is a target specified device for the beginners who primarily fancy big zoom for their compacts. If you are looking for something resembling a DSLR more, you had better check out Fujifilm HS30EXR that contains an array of features such as RAW support, physical zoom and focus rings, which would interest any potential buyer.

Focus and Face Detection

At its best, we would call the AF system of Fujifilm FinePix SL300 snappy, not that it is super slow or something, but is just not comparable to the ones available now. We have a 9-point AF system with a Centre and Spot AF system. The face detection feature of the camera can detect up to 9 faces in a single frame but again, is rather inefficient in poor lighting conditions, in fact many a times, you lost complete focus of the camera.

Lens and Image Stabilization

Now, every camera has a brand feature and our camera’s brand feature is it’s 30x optical zoom, which has a huge focal range cover like literally huge, which in 35mm terms: 24-720mm. This is really excellent at the telephoto end and certainly needs no telling and would be just amazing for capturing photographs of ships on the horizons or if you are closing in big time on the wildlife and if we have the permission of adding on the portraits. To help with sharpening up your images at a really long setting, that is at the telephoto end obviously, Fujifilm FinePix SL300 has 2 types of image stabilisation techniques waiting. One of these is a high sensitivity value measuring ISO 6400 that allows you to work at a faster shutter speed to work hard in tandem with the help of a sensor shift IS system, which helps you to keep your pictures steady.

It is however, a big disappointment that the zoom ring of Fujifilm FinePix HS series has not made its way on Fujifilm FinePix SL300. Now, although, there are like 45 incremental steps involved in the zoom range of the camera, it does not remain as a substitute for the manual control setting of zoom ring. However, that been said, it definitely does mean that the photographers who are moving back and forth using really meagre compacts have a familiar type of zoom that is good to use.

Screen and Menus

Take a look at the pictures you have drawn out of your camera Fujifilm FinePix SL300 and you realise that they look insanely crisp, quite well poised and exposed thanks to the big and high-resolution 3 inches LCD screen at the rear of the camera. Alongside this LCD, we also have an EVF that allows you the permit to hold up your camera up to the level of your eye just to compose a picture, this quite certainly helps out when you are working on the extreme telephoto lengths of focusing. The Electronic View Finder is actually small on the camera and has a standard resolution of 201K dots, so it is something but definitely not something, that you would like to make an example out of. Then, adding on there is a dioptre adjustment setting, which allows you to tune in for magnification level settings.

Battery

Battery, the powerhouse of any camera in the world is one key aspect for the durability of your device and we quite certainly have a good freaking news in this department as Fujifilm FinePix SL300 has decided to replace the traditional and rather inefficient AA batteries ( 4 in particular ) than most Fujifilm bridge devices take. This brings out quite a respectable battery life that measures around 300 shots, but then, you lose the sheer flexibility of being able to replace them just like that.

Video Mode

We are rather disappointed in this section, with the availability of full HD 1080p movie modes on all the possible frame rates in the world like 60p, 30p, 60i, 50i wherein, you actually have a chance to enjoy the larger than life detailing. However, you fail to do so in with our reviewed device, which at its best works at 720p at 25 frames per second. Apart from this standard HD mode, you have a VGA mode that offers 640 x 480 pixels also called 480p mode, videos in this can be shot at 30p and 25p frame rate.

Sensors

The sensor is pretty much the heart of any camera. Fujifilm FinePix SL300 now sports a rather intriguing but not appealing 14MP CCD sensor that fails behind the CMOS sensors of modern times. Talking about the ISO sensitivity offered, there is the maximum of 6400 ISO and minimum of 64 ISO. The shutter speed ranges from 8 seconds to 1/4000 seconds, which actually is quite impressive everything said and done.

Pros

  • High-quality battery life
  • Respectable value for money
  • 2cm minimum focusing distance allows for good macro shots
  • Versatile zoom range
  • Comes with a strap and lens cap
  • Rubber on grip and lens makes it easy to hold

Cons

  • Only 720p HD video quality, unavailability of 1080p Full HD
  • Barrel distortion when shooting close-up objects
  • Poor image quality at ISO 1600 and above
  • CCD Sensor
